To Marj in on Orange NC.-- There is a little bit of rumor that Shadrach Hodge MAY have been the son of James Hodge-- also some rumor that Shadrach's line was originally from the 'Carolina's' but no substantiation. As info., all of the first names are used in my line from Shadrach -- his son William, etc. ANY chance you have info. that ties to Shadrach?? Thanks Bill Hodge St. Charles Mo.
Marj, I have transcriptions of several old letter which contain info on the Hodges and Mebane families. Hope you can find something useful. This line is often confused with my line of Francis Hodge (1745-1798) in Sullivan Co., Tn. ***Dated Feb. 24 - 1883 Quotes a letter from Robert A. Hodge of Mebanesville (?) as saying: The records of Hillsborough show the names of John & George Hodges being the first settlers of the Hodge in this country - the will of John Hodge shows that he had 5 sons and one daughter - the names were John, Joseph, Robert., George and Samuel. His daughter's name was Agnes, and he had 2 grandsons, named William and Joseph, sons of John. You say your grandfather was Joseph - who must have been a grandson of old John Hodges by him having a brother William. My grandfather's name was Samuel, & died in N. C. I don't know if he was a son of the old John Hodge or a grandson. I have a letter from Samuel Mebane (?) White (?) where post office in Mebanesville (?) same as Robt. Mr. White writes a long letter, well written - says he is 70 years old and says he own a part of the land formerly owned by John Hodge and that he has a deed in his possession made by Rev. William Hodge to Joseph Hodge & Daniel Turrentine dated Feb. 19, 1800. Then another deed from Joseph Hodge and Daniel Turrentine to Steven White & Samuel White dated Oct. 15, 1800. Samuel White was the father of the S. M. White who writes me. He says the Hodge family all went west about that time. He evidently don't know anything about the large family of John Hodges Robt. A. writes about. Here is a puzzle. Both mail their letters at Mebanesville post office and live in counties joining if not in the same county. Samuel M. White says amongst the most influential settlers of their neighborhood were the Hodges, Whites, Allens and Mr. ?? [could be Lover, Laver, Jones or other]. Mr. White says he thinks they all came from Pennsylvania & of Scotch Irish descent and participated in the Revolution. John Hodges the ancestor of the Hodges family and my grandfather Stephen White were near neighbors & I suppose the families were intimate, and what I know about the Hodge family was from hearing my father and my uncles speak of them, but my father as been dead 34 years ago - in his 73rd year and he was the youngest of the family. John Hodge had 3 sons that I heard him speak of. I never heard of any daughters - the sons names were Joseph, William & Robt. Who Joseph married, I don't know. William married Charity White, sister to my father. Robert married Polly Mebane, daughter of General Alex Mebane, who was a man of great influence and served several terms in Congress from their district. He speaks of Rev William Hodge having been a ?? preacher. Also quotes from a book of grandfather being wounded by Hastings, a Tory, and that they lived neighbors after the war, and were friends. [This letter ends:] Give my kindest regards to your Mother & all the family - with best wishes & Jas. M. Allan. May, 9, 1883 Cousin Gertrude Received yesterday a letter from Robert A. Hodge of Mebansville, N.C. He says the will of John Hodge was made in 1792 as appears in the Office of The Register to Deeds in Hillsboro. The will mentioned 5 sons, John, Joseph, Robert, George and Samuel, and two grandsons, William and Joseph, sons of John. He says " there was no doubt a William too, who was the Rev. William Hodge, but being probably settled off already and gone into the Ministry, it was considered unwise to do still more for him, hence he is not mentioned in the will and it is thought that John Hodge named as the oldest son, died and hence the old man provided for his(John's) sons in his will. He says further "Now John and George had lived on Back Creek, entered 1779. The old man died and his widow Agnes moved West. Old John had a brother George, I suppose from this , as well as a son George, which proves your Mother's memory correct as to the brother of her father being name George . Her says further on how often heard our father and mother talk of their great uncle, Joseph Hodge being shot with a ram rod by a Tory named Hastings, after Joseph Hodge had taken him prisoner . Good evidence , and have heard them speak of their great- uncles Robert and William. Our great grandfather was named Samuel from the best information we can get. Tradition says old man Hodge was too old to serve in the war , and he with old man White hid out once, and that the old man Hodge snored so loud , old man White had to wake him up , for fear the British would hear him. He says our father was born 1804- a little older than your grandmother, but a generation behind. Further , our grandmother was an Allen who married a Mebane of Hawfields, who owned much land in Mississippi. To finish this business, we need to find the Ancestors of John Hodge. Looked over a copy of Dugah's Registry. It offers no help for our cause . Please give my kindest good-will to your dear Mother and to all our friends in your family - with highest regards Jas. M.
