    3. Hello again, Earl and Hitt-L listmates! Regarding the "History of Barbour Co., WV" book, it does not list sources. The book was written in 1899 by Hu Maxwell. He wrote similar books on other counties in WV. The family history sections, especially, cannot be relied upon because they were submitted by the families themselves. As you know, people's memories are not always the best, and official records were not kept in many cases. I suspect that much of the information in the "Family Histories" section is things that had been handed down orally by the submitters' parents and other relatives. However, in searching for other (non-Hitt) relatives, I have used these books to point me in the right direction. I was unaware of the controversy, but just thought it interesting to find the Hitt family name in this book. ---------- > From: Earl J.
