Hi Everyone, Sorry about that bit of spam that got through. Apparently the Hitt List was not the only one. Here is a note from Rootsweb Admin, they were hit with 11,000 piece of spam e-mail today! I personally trashed over 300 pieces of it myself : ( Subject: Re: Have Rootsweb Mailing lists received ... I haven't done any analysis of our spam volume over time. I'm curious too -- there have been several things that I'd like to plot against our spam receipts. It's likely to be difficult to do a sensible analysis because spam is delivered in surges, not in smooth increments; we get days with almost no spam, and then days like today when we got about 11,000 spam messages. One thing I am positive of is that even if SAFEeps turned out to be an evil spammers' trick, our use of the system could not increase the amount of spam sent to a *particular* list. We did a "domain-wide opt-out" with SAFEeps, meaning that we instructed them that the whole domain is not to receive any spam. We didn't supply them with any individual addresses at RootsWeb.com, so they would have no way of knowing individual mailing list addresses. -- Regards, Tim Pierce RootsWeb Genealogical Data Cooperative system obfuscator and hack-of-all-trades Take care, Yvonne in Burke, VA Vive la USGW! ************************** MOGenWeb State Coordinator http://www.rootsweb.com/~mogenweb/mo.htm MO, KS, NC and DC Archives Manager USGenWeb National Advisory Board CC Rep SE/Mid-Atlantic Region http://pluto.beseen.com/boardroom/p/18312/ ICQ#1541292 mailto:hen1@idt.net
