Hello, Earl, I have a question regarding the marriage information you forwarded pertaining to Lystra and his wife, Margaret Peggy HITT. You wrote: She was married to Lystra VAUGHAN/BAUGHAN (son of Mordecai VAUGHAN/BAUGHAN and Eve BAUMGARDNER) about 1800 in Virginia I can agree that they were probably married about 1800 as their first child was born in 1804. However, I have never been able to find a record of the marriage anywhere; and while I believe circumstantial evidence points to Fauquier or Culpeper Co, VA, its also possible that they were married in North Carolina or on the way there. Have you seen anything substantive on this date and place? Also, with regard to one of your sources, Baughns of Washington Court House, Ohio; Washington County Court House, Ohio, Id like to add some information. This was originally a chapter in a book written about the BAUGHN family from Virginia by Lorene F. BARKER in 1954. Mrs. BARKER received some information that was not entirely correct from a correspondent, and then confused some of the information in trying to transcribe it. It is (much like the Germanna research weve seen discussed here lately) a great pointer with clues about where to begin looking, but should not be accepted as written in stone. The other problem is that Washington Court House, Ohio, is the county seat of Fayette County, OH, and is in the center of the state. Washington County, OH, is in the southeast corner of the state, and anyone looking there for the BAUGHN family would be about 200 miles off. Id also like to mention that while I understand the usage of VAUGHAN/BAUGHAN in these messages, Mordecai was relatively consistent in using the B for spelling his name as were the five children who went to Ohio. There were at least two other BAUGHAN families in the area (we believe them to be related, but havent connected them yet); but there were also several VAUGHAN families -- of which one or two MAY have been related, and at least three were not related in any way we can find. Anyone researching this family should be very careful to check and double- check their evidence. (Not a bad idea anyhow!) Thanks for your efforts. We can always count on you to help.
