To Ben L. Grove: Here is the data on David Hitt: 1. David HITT[1,2,3] was born about 1776 in Fauquier County, Virginia. 1850 Census age was 74. He died on 5 Aug 1857 in Greene County, Alabama. He was buried in Greene County, Alabama. The 1790 Federal Census for Laurens County, South Carolina lists David Hitt head of household with 1 male 26-45. It is believed that David moved to Alabama about 1830 and settled on land which became Sumpter County on 18 December 1832. The 1840 Federal Census lists David Hitt as living in Sumter County, Alabama with nine in his family. He is found in the 1850 Census for Greene County, Alabama, living alone, therefore, it might be assumed that his wife had died and all his children had married or left home. According to the 1850 Census, David was 74 years of age and was living next to Herman Hitt, who is believed to be a son. Other Hitt families lived near David including: Charles, Richard, Benjamin M., Oswell, and Sarah J. Hitt. David Hitt's will can be found in Greene County, Alabama, Probate Book R, page 84. David was married to Jane MEEK (daughter of John MEEK and Elleanor MILLS) on 14 Mar 1803 in Laurens County, South Carolina. Jane MEEK[2] was born on 9 Jan 1783 in Laurens County, South Carolina.
