    3. Hi, Yes I do manage to cover a lot of territory, especially with my computer. Sure makes ancestor searching a lot easier. I need to mention something. I have not done ANY research on the Hitt family and really never intended to. I don't pick up the Hitt Line until quite a ways back. Ok, here is what I have on John and Franky Hitt. John Hitt, eldest son of Henry Hitt and his wife Alice Katherine Holtzclaw, was born Jan 8, 1759, in Fauquier County, Virginia, and died in 1839, in Cape Girardeau County, Missouri. He married Frances Banks on January 21, 1782, in Virginia or South Carolina. (I am copying from someone else's work about 1970s.)"At the present writing we know little about the background of Frances Banks. From the 1850Census she was born in Virginia ca. 1763. Some of her relatives moved to Edgefield County, South Carolina, probably at the same time that Henry Hitt and Alice Katherine Holtzclaw moved there, ca. 1779, from Halifax County, VA, and are later found on Edgefield tax rolls. Records indicate that relatives of Frances Banks also moved with her and husband John Hitt to Washington County, GA., ca 1786. Court records in Washington County show that Richard Banks bought land from John and Frances Hitt in 1806, when John and Fraces moved from Washington Co., Ga., to MO." If you have information on Franky Banks Hitt I would love to have a copy. John Hitt and his wife Frances Banks were in Missouri, at least by July 19, 1806, when they were listed as members of the first non-Catholic church west of the Mississippi River. On October 24, 1910, the Missouri Baptist General Association erected a monument two miles southeast of Jackson, MO. with the following inscription: "Here stood the Bethel Baptist Church, the first permanent non-Catholic church west of the Mississippi River, constituted July 19, 1806, with these members: David Green, Thomas English, William Matthews, William Smith, James English, Agnes Ballew, Thomas Bull, Clara Abernathy, Catherine Anderson, Anthony Rogerts, Edward Spear, Rebecca Randol, JOHN HITT, and FRANCES HITT. What hath God wrought?" And "on May 11, 1822, fourteen members of the Bethel Church were dismissed for the purpose of organizing the Hebron Church five miles southeast of Jackson. These were the Randol, Poe, and HITT families.".......I am skipping some because you may have all this and it is very long. >From Old Bethel Church by Jenkins obituaries for JOHN and FRANCES HITT were obtained: JOHN HITT, another charger member of Bethel, was born in 1759, probably in Georgia. He was an active member for nearly 50 years; and was never known to have swerved from his profession. In 1814 he was elected door keeper for the meeting house. After long and painful afflictions he departed this live November 2, 1839, in the eightieth year of his useful life. FRANCES HITT, wife of JOHN HITT, was born in Georgia in 1763. She was converted in 1804 and baptized by Elder Joseph Baker and united with Bethel Church in Washington County, Georgia. Coming to Missouri soon afterward, whe entered, as one of the constituent members, Bethel Church, by letter. She lived an orderly member 48 years, and fell asleep in Jesus May 17, 1852, aged 89 years." "It must be noted that Mr. Jenkins, in working with the records, saw that they entered the church by letter from Georgia, so he assumed that they were born in Georgia. Actually, both were born in Virginia, and married in either Virginia or South Carolina. They did not live in Georgia until 1783-1786. Also, the name 'Bethel' Church in Washington County, GA is an error, probably made by the church clerk who wrote these obituaries. The church in Georgia to which john and Frances Hitt belonged was Bethlehem Church and still exists near the town of Worthen (or did in 1968) in County of Washington, Georgia. A letter from the present clerk of this old church confirmed this. He said that JOHN HITT was reinstated in the church and a year later FRANCES united with the church. We can assume FRANCES was not Baptist until then, but probably Episcopalian as were most of the Banks family. " (I'm tired) CHILDREN OF JOHN HITT and FRANCES (FRANKEY) BANKS were: 1. WILLIAM, b. "A Note Necessary - The above children of Rachel Hitt and Peter Franks will appear under Peter Franks IV. in the Franks Family Section of this book. The lineages for these children will be brought forward to the present generation." The Hitt Family: Addition Material From 1805 Georgia Land Lottery, JOHN HITT, #1968, residence Washington Co., GA, drew two blans, and WILLIAM HITT, #1962, residence Washington Co., GA, drew one blank. It is assumed that JOHN HITT left Washington Co., GA, about this same time. Cape Girardeau was in the Territory of Louisiana. The U>S> purchase of Louisiana in 1803, opened up vast land area in the middle Section of North America, and settlers rushed to take advantage of this. Cape Girardeau County was not formed until 1812, after the Hitt family had settled there." "Belated Census of Earliest Settlers of Cape Girardeau County, Missorui - William J. Gammon has gathered names from cemeteries of Cape Girerdeau County." I am assuming that you have these records. I have a whole page listed. All Hitts. "From History of Southeast Missouri:" "William Hitt, who became a member of Bethel church in 1812, and who afterward served as its clerk for a number of years, was one of the prominent members. He was the grandfather of the late Deacon Smith Hitt of Cape Girardeau Baptist church. Benjamin Hitt, who also united with Bethel church in 1812, was the father of the late Judge Samuel Hitt, of Cape Girardeau." "also, from same:" "In June, 1820, an organization was established on Apple Creek near Oak Ridge and it was formed into a church in September of that year.....BENJAMIN HITT is listed as one of the committee members who had charge of the organization of the church." Most of this research came for book Gail Felt Davis did as a research paper for a degree from a University. There is a lot of the Hitt, Holtzclaw, Otterbach, Frank and other families. She was very through in her research. She dotted all the i'sand crossed all the t's. Her work is well doccumented. She did a lot of research. Let me know if you can use more information. I hope I did not duplicate research you have done. Cassie PS I am still planning on sending you copies of the Beaty Family from the Coryell Co., History Book. I work slow. . -----Original Message----- From: Mike Allen <Mike_Allen@emsinfo.com> To: <HITT-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Thursday, November 05, 1998 2:22 PM Subject: Re: John Hitt > >Cassie, Hi ! > >You do get around <g> Looks like we have more in common than just the >Pruetts and Cargills in Coryell.
