I believe Ted is right, here's the information on Joseph in my data base: 1. Joseph HITT Jr.[1,2,3,4] was born about 1742/43 in Fauquier County, Virginia. He died before 21 Feb 1826 in Culpeper County, Virginia. Joseph came to Culpeper County, Virginia about 1778 and lived there until his death. He is listed in the Culpeper tithables after 1790 (Geramnna Record No. 1, p.23). Joseph probably could not read or write English as on 21 January 1778 he witnessed a will for Bromfill Long by signing with his mark (Ref: Bromfil Long's will, St. Mark's Parish, Culpeper County, Virginia, dated 21 January 1778, proved 20 July 1778). Joseph patented land in Culpeper County: "Joseph Hitt assignee of French Strother assignee of William Thompson heir at law to Rev. John Thompson dec'd. 150 A. (9 Feb 1747) in Culpeper County in Great Fork of Rappahannock River adj. said Thompson, Samuel Coleman. 14 Mar 1798. (Inclosed F. Strother 10 May 1798)" (Patent Book Y, page 28). A Joseph Hitt appears in the 1800 Tax List for Culpeper County, Virginia, District of David Brown. He is listed as owning three horses. This listing could be for Joseph Hitt's son Joseph Hitt III. (Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, Vol 62, No. 1, January 1954, p. 124). The 1820 Federal Census, page 78, lists Joseph, age 45+, and his wife, age 45+, with two slaves.. The will of Joseph Hitt, Jr. (Will Book K, page 228, Culpeper County, Virginia) was written on 2 November 1825 and proved on 21 February 1826. (This will can only be that of Joseph, Jr. If it were the will of Joseph, Sr. he would have been 108 years old when it was written.) Joseph's wife must have died before he made his will as there is no mention of her in his will. The will lists his heirs as: sons William, John, Joseph, James; daughters Peggy Vaughn (Baughn) and Mary Barnes. His third daughter died before the will was written. The text of the will is as follows: In the name of God Amen I Joseph Hitt of the County of Culpeper and State of Virginia being oald and infirm But of sound mind and memory do make and constitute this my last Will and Testament hereby revoaking all wills by me heretofore made as to what worldly goods it hath pleased God to bestow on me my wish is that it be disposed of in the following manner. First that my executor hereafter named out of my personal estate pay all my just debts and the residue if any I wish desposed of in the following manner I give and bequeath to my son William Hitt the land whereon he now resideth as surveyed by Wiat Camp containing one hundred and sixty seven acres more or less on his paying to the Trustee of Betsey Baughan hereafter named one hundred dollars To my daughter Mary Barnes one hundred dollars To my daughter Peggy Baughan one hundred dollars and that my Executor out of my personal estate pay to the said Trustee of Betsey Baughan twenty five dollars To Mary Barnes twenty five dollars and to Peggy Baughan twenty five dollars and the residue of my land whereon I now liv I giv I give and bequeath to my three sons, to wit, John Hitt Joseph Hitt and James Hitt to be equally divided between them the residue of my estate of every discription my will and desire is that it be divided in the following manner my son John Hitt to have one seventh part my son Joseph Hitt one seventh part that my son William Hitt have one seventh part that my son James have one seventh part and that the Trustee of Betsey Baughan have one seventh part with the twenty five dollars above mentioned with the balance that will be coming to her seventh part at the final settlement of my estate and that he pay her annually the legal Interest and at her deceas to be eaqually divided btween all her children To my Daughter Mary Barnes one seventh part To my Daughter Peggy Baughan one seventh part and lastly I do nominate and appoint my son William Hitt Executor of this my last Will and Testament and also Trustee for my Daugther Betsey Baughan In witness hereof I have hereunto fixed my hand seal this 2nd day of November 1825 NB it is my wish that my Executor pay my son James Hitt one Feather Bed & furniture to Betsey Baughan one Bead and Furniture. An estate sale was held on 3 March 1836. The following Hitt Family members were among the purchasers at Joseph's estate sale: Joseph, William, John, Sr., Peter, Joel, James, Sr., Marshall, and James Hitt, Jr. (Culpeper County, Virginia Will Book K, 286 ff). In William Hitt's accounts for the estate were payments to Marshall Hitt "for services rendered", to Joseph Hitt, Jr. for "amount of warrant against estate", and to William Taylor "for crying the sale". A note in the account reads "deduct $25 each for three sisters willed to themselves". (Culpeper County, Virginia Will Book N, p. 377) There is much confusion over the children of Joseph, Sr. and Joseph, Jr. For this record the children of Joseph Hitt, Jr. are based upon his will and the Federal Census. The identity of the Hitts in attendance at the Joseph Hitt, Jr. estate sale are believed to be related as follows: Joseph Hitt was most likely the son of Joseph, Jr. and he is identified in this family record as Joseph III. Marshall and Peter Hitt are believed to be grandsons of Joseph, Jr. and the sons of Joseph Hitt III. (Joseph, Jr. had a brother named Peter but he died before Joseph, Jr.) James and William are also believed to have been the sons of Joseph, Jr. Joel was a nephew of Joseph, Jr.; the son of his brother John. The John, Sr. listed at the estate sale could have been Joseph, Jr.'s brother or his son, as both were still living at the time. James, Jr. remains unidentified. James HITT[5] was born before 1790 in Culpeper County, Virginia.[6] The will of Joseph Hitt, Jr., identifies James as a son and heir (Will Book K, page 228, Culpeper County, Virginia, written 2 November 1825, proved 21 February 1826). James Hitt is listed in the 1830 Federal Census for Culpeper County, Virginia with 2 males 5-10 years, 1 male 40-50 years, 1 female under 5 years, 1 female 5-10 years, 1 female 30-40 years, and 1 slave. James Hitt is listed in the 1840 Federal Census for Culpeper County. This listing shows the household as: 1 male under 5 years, 1 male 5-10 years, 2 males 10-15 years, 1 male 15-20 years, 1 male 50-60 years, 2 females under 5 years, 1 female 5-10 years, 2 females 10-15 years, and 1 female 30-40 years old.
