This is a correction of information that I previously posted to this list concerning the burial site of Aldridge Hitt, son of Peter Hitt and Lucinda O. Rosser. My previous info was from the cemetary records of the Tazewell County, Illinois, Genealogical and Historical Society. Having now visited, photographed and rubbed the stone in Gaines Cemetary, Little Mackinaw Twp., Tazewell Co., Illinois, I can tell you that the stone in fact reads: Aldridge Hitt 1802-1896 Catherine Allensworth His Wife 1812-1888 There are several Allensworths among the early settlers of Tazewell Co., Illinois, but their relationship to Catherine is unclear. Evidence from census data and secondary sources in Tazewell Co., Illinois shows that the Allensworths were Virginians who spent at least 12 years in the vicinity of Muhlenberg and Todd Counties, Kentucky, and Montgomery County, Tennessee before moving on to Illinois. It would appear to be most probable that the marriage of Aldridge Hitt and Catherine Hitt occurred in that area. The Automated Archives CD-ROM collection lists the following marriages in Muhlenberg Co., Kentucky: 9 Nov. 1819 James S.B. ALLENSWORTH to Catherine YOUNG 12 July 1839 Elizabeth HITT to John DOBBS 18 Aug. 1858 William H. HITT to Martha J.ALLEN 17 Dec. 1894 Martha Jane HITT to Burly HACKNEY Now, James S.B. Allensworth was one of the first settlers of Little Mackinaw Township in Tazewell County, Illinois in 1831, but I have no idea who these Hitts are. Since I have never done any research in Kentucky or Tennesee and know almost nothing about the states, I would like to correspond with anybody who knows anything about that area.
