I look forward to learning about your ancestry. I am definitely your JAMES contact. You will find what you're looking for in my book STRAY LEAVES, THE JAMES FAMILY IN AMERICA, 1650-1997. The nearest copy to you is in the Pulaski Co Historical Society in Somerset KY. But the bones I can provide via e-mail. I will be sending you in subsequent e-mail the following: 1. The Descendants of ROWLAND JONES. This is likely your Brereton Jones family, if you don't already have it. I would appreciate learning how you fit into it, because I don't have you yet as a descendant. This line also ties in with the JAMES and HITT families. 2. The descendants of PETER HITT. This may be seriously flawed. I have yet to find an authoritative Hitt family member who can clarify all the Peter Hitts which exist. I've done my best to gain an understanding and to document as best as I understand. But I believe it remains falwed. I just don't know where. Perhaps you have more information. You will find in it the Hitt-James connections. 3. The early generations of JAMES DESCENDANTS, starting with JOHN JAMES of 1650 VA to JOHN M. JAMES & CLARA NALL, migrants from VA to KY. These are my early ancestors. JOHN M. JAMES served in the Kentucky State Legislature in 1800, 1802, and 1807. He was followed by several other James family members in the state legislature. ANDREW JACKSON "A.J." JAMES was secretary of state in KY around the 1870's. I've told people my only condition for returning to Pulaski Co (in which I have never lived) is if they would elect me also to the State Legislature. To answer your question regarding Jesse & Frank. There is abundant circumstanital evidence that JOHN M. JAMES was the father of REV. ROBERT SALLEE JAMES, the father of Frank & Jesse. Many James descendant lines who lived over a 125 year period in seperate parts of the country, all tell similar stories of the relationship. Last year I contacted James Staars, the forensic scientist who exhunmed Jesse and performed the DNA testing. Regretfully he informed me a DNA test would not resolve our dilemma. Apparently the DNA markers were Mimms markers from Jesse maternal side. Our decsndancy would be paternal. Therefore the DNA testing could not possibly produce a result. Last year I started collecting photos to add to my book. For every known Jesse James photo I can now produce a look-a-like family member going back to the 1850s and progressing to today. The matches are nothing short of stunning. In fact in the last year I believe I have been able to convince Jesse James great grandson, Judge James Ross, who lives nearby here in Southern California. He now calls me a cousin. In my book I argued against all the family lore, point for point, in an effort to discredit the possibility. After two years, however, I am now firmly convinced of the relationship. The abundance of evidence is overwhelming. Someday the case will be made conlusively. Do you have any JAMES relatives? In Kentucky in the 1950's-60's there was a C.W.JAMES, an attorney in Harrodsburg. I found his photo in the rare books room at the Kentucky Historical Society. In my estimation, he too is one of my James, although I don't know how. My book documents about 1600+ James family members, and continues to grow. I look forward to hearing more from you. Just let me know how I can help. The James family has a long history of public, as well as religious, service. Our greatest asset is our ability to confound expectation. Best regards, ERIC JAMES

See > Thomas Dodson Sr in Fauquier VA--see Joseph Hitt in Pr William > White,Sorry, I have no more info than what i already posted. I am so confused about this family name. I also believe sometime when the Hitt/Hittsons came from England they may have used the name Eidson. I found an Alexander Hittson and his father was Boyce Eidson. He was a natural son to Boyce. Have never been able to prove this but myself and a couple other cousins researching believe the same. I hope i havent confused you more. I wish i knew what alexanders fathers name was. I have another cousin that has done research and as soon as she gets time shes going to send me what she has on this family, although i dont think she knows who his father was either. I do not know where alexander was in 1790. I knew Thomas Dodson was Rhodas Father and have about 3 more generations back on them. But i come from his first wife Mackey Royall. I have a couple questions for you, Why was alexander in the Pittsylvania marriage bonds(is this were he married mackey royal, i dont have this info). Also were did you find Thomas Dodson Will and could i get a copy. Also you mention a Joseph Hitt, who was he married to and where does he fit in. I am going to look through my stack of papers and see if i cant place him in 1890. Do keep in touch, maybe both of us can figure this family out. > ==== HITT Mailing List ==== > 2,500 Discussion Lists!!! 3. I am looking for information on the Hitt family. I am related twice to Nancy Hitt, wife of John Miller, I. I believe that Nancy was the daughter of Peter Hitt, II, born 1726 in Fauquier Co., Va., being himself the son of Peter Hitt, Sr., of the Germanna Colony. I am looking for the following information: (1) Who was Peter Hitt, Sr., married to? I have him married to Elizabeth Otterbach. Is that correct? What is her ancestry? (2) I show Nancy Hitt's mother as Sarah James. Is that correct? I show her father as John James of Fauquier County, Va. but that is all I have on her. Does anyone have more information on her ancestry? Is she somehow related to Jesse James of the James gang? I live in West Virginia. I served for several terms in the WV State Senate as did my father. My brother was the previous Governor of Kentucky, being Brereton C. Jones. We lost our father about four years ago. Unfortunately, we did not develop an interest in tracing our family tree until after he was gone. I am sure he could have answered many questions. Would appreciate any help anyone could supply. Thanks, Ned

I noted your posting above. In it, regarding the 1823 Holtzklau attorney appointment, you cite SARAH HITT, late deceased, wife of PETER HITT, deceased. I believe this is my SARAH JAMES, died in 1822. I ma interested in finding the descendants of this SARAH JAMES & PETER HITT. Can you provide them for me? Also, might I find additional information in the source books you cite, and are those books readily available for purchase. Thank you for your help in this matter. 3. I show that James Weaver Hitt b. 1798 married Eliza Button on 18 January 1856 in LaGrange, KY. Was this his second wife? If Lucinda Kalfus died on 26 July 1856, did he remarry before she died? Who are the children of each? Thanks for any help you or someone can give. 3. Hi Gang, Below you will find some info that was sent to me by way of another Surname list I am on. I thought it was interesting. I am not sure of it's accuracy, but it would sure be worth investigating if you had relatives just drop with no trace. It is best viewed on full page layout. Hope it helps someone. Later, Judy _______________________________________________________________________________ "In case you ever wondered why a large number of your ancestors disappeared during a certain period in history, this might help. Epidemics have always had a great influence on people - and thus influencing, as well, the genealogists trying to trace them. Many cases of people disappearing from records can be traced to dying during an epidemic or moving away from the affected area. Some of the major epidemics in the United States are listed below. 1657 Boston: Measles 1687 Boston: Measles 1690 New York: Yellow Fever 1713 Boston: Measles 1729 Boston: Measles 1732-33 Worldwide: Influenza 1738 South Carolina: Smallpox 1739-40 Boston: Measles 1747 Conn, NY, PA & SC: Measles 1759 North America (areas inhabited by white people): Measles 1761 North America & West Indies: Influenza 1772 North America: Measles 1775 North America (especially hard in New England): Epidemic (unknown) 1775-76 Worldwide: Influenza (one of worst flu epidemics) 1788 Philadelphia & NY: Measles 1793 Vermont: Influenza and a "putrid fever" 1793 Virginia: Influenza (killed 500 people in 5 counties in 4 weeks) 1793 Philadelphia: Yellow Fever (one of worst) 1783* Delaware (Dover) "extremely fatal" bilious disorder 1793 Pennsylvania (Harrisburg & Middletown) many unexplained deaths 1794 Philadelphia: Yellow Fever 1796-97 Philadelphia: Yellow Fever 1798 Philadelphia: Yellow Fever (one of worst) 1803 New York: Yellow Fever 1820-23 Nationwide: "fever" (starts on Schuylkill River, PA & spreads) 1831-32 Nationwide: Asiatic Cholera (brought by English emigrants) 1832 New York & other major cities: Cholera 1837 Philadelphia: Typhus 1841 Nationwide: Yellow Fever (especially severe in South) 1847 New Orleans: Yellow Fever 1847-48 Worldwide: Influenza 1848-49 North America: Cholera 1850 Nationwide: Yellow Fever 1850-51 North America: Influenza 1852 Nationwide: Yellow Fever (New Orleans 8,000 die in summer) 1855 Nationwide (many parts) Yellow Fever 1857-59 Worldwide: Influenza (one of disease's greatest epidemics) 1860-61 Pennsylvania: Smallpox 1865-73 Philadelphia, NY, Boston, New Orleans, Baltimore, Memphis & Washington DC: A series of recurring epidemics of Smallpox, Cholera, Typhus, Typhoid, Scarlet Fever & Yellow Fever 1873-75 North America & Europe: Influenza 1878 New Orleans: Yellow Fever (last great epidemic of disease) 1885 Plymouth, PA: Typhoid 1886 Jacksonville, FL: Yellow Fever 1918 Worldwide: Influenza (high point year) More people hospitalized in World War I from Influenza than wounds.
