I show that Emily Hane Hitt d/o Joel Hitt, Jr. b. 1798 married William T. Hitt in 1853. He was the son of William Hitt. . .but I don't know which one. Can someone help? Thanks! Gordon Lane Sewanee, TN
Perhaps you can help me clear up a mystery. My great grandfather was Rueben Martin Hitt who married Emma Hughes in Webster County, MS. Sometime around 1893 when my grandmother, Carrie Fletcher Hitt, was an infant the family moved to Texas in an effort to improve Emma's health. They settled somewhere around New Braunfels. In 1899 when Emma's health did not improve, the family returned to MS. My guess is they went to Texas because relatives had settled there, but I have never been able to find a connection. Somewhere there has to be a connection with the Texas Hitts. John Ulmer Knoxville, TN
To Earl Hitt and Judith Walters: THANK YOU! You have just opened a lot of doors for me! Now I know where to focus my research. Judith, thank you SO MUCH for taking the time to check out the census records for me. If I can ever do anything to return the favor, please let me know. On Wednesday, March 04, 1998 2:32 PM, Earl J. Aubrey Newton Hitt is my husband's grandfather. (My husband is Leo Newton Hitt (see below). I have set forth the information that I have on the family. The information on the descendants of Joe Stephen Hitt (Aubrey's son) are accurate. I'm not so sure about the daughter of Aubrey and Faye Mitchell Hitt. The family became estranged after Joe's death about 25 years ago. I'm not really certain for the reasons behind it, but my husband has asked me not to contact his grandfather and I must respect his wishes. I believe that my mother-in-law corresponds occasionally (perhaps once a year at Christmas?) with one of the sisters, but I'm not even sure of that. It's such a sore subject I just try not to pry. At the end of this genealogy report on the descendants of Aubrey Newton Hitt, there is a copy of an e-mail with census information which I received from Judith Walters, another HITT-L researcher. Need explanation for Nimrod Hitt as voter in Pr William Co VA in 1741, so was born by 1720. The name Nimrod Hitt is passed down in other known HITT lines, and Joseph Hitt was also in Pr William Co VA in 1752 with the same Holtzclaw family. Was this Nimrod Hitt a son of Peter Hitt of Fauquier Co VA, 1716? Also note John Roberts on the list of voters, and I have a Rachal Hyte Roberts deceased 1799 in Halifax-Mecklenburg VA who says she was the daughter of Joseph Hyte, and widow of John Roberts. This is the exact area along the Hyco-Dan River where Henry Hitt & Peter Hitt lived 1760-1784. The Poll for the Election of Burgesses for the County of Prince William, A.D. 1741. "This register includes the names of persons who, in the election of Burgesses, in 1741, polled 828 votes for the candidates indicated. Many of the voters' names are repetitions, several candidates having received the votes of the same person. The territory covered the limits of the present county of Prince William, together with that now included within the counties of Fairfax, Loudoun, and Fauquier. In other words, it extended along the Potomac to the Blue Ridge." One candidate was Val. Peyton. Voters include{1741}: Darby Callahan, John Carr, Jno. Carr, C. W. Carr, Geo. Crosbey, David Darnell, Waugh Darnell (& more Darnells), John Diskim, John Diskin, Joseph Dixson, Jos. Dulany, Jno. Duncomb, Marshall Duncan (2), Joseph Duncan, Thomas Duncan, Charles Garner, Jno. The use of the name "Newton" extends to all of the Germanna colonists. In my line, mostly second colony people, my uncle and my brother have the middle name of Newton. Visiting the cemeteries of the Germanna area, one notices that it occurs very often. There was a family by the name of Newton living in the area which is now Madison Co., VA. Judith, thank you so much for this information. This does appear to be right on point for the person and line I want to search. Aubrey Newton Hitt was/is my husband's grandfather. I believe he is still alive -- his wife died several years ago. The family has been estranged for over 25 years, and my husband has asked me not to contact him. (What a thing to say to a genealogist!) My father's husband, Joe Stephen Hitt, died in 1974, and we're in PA while the Hitts are in Texas, so there is really no easy way for me to get the information. I appreciate your kindness tremendously. Thank you again. In recent postings to the list, I have noticed the frequent use of the name "Newton" as a middle name. In fact, it is my husband's middle name as well. There must have been some family member with that name, who everyone else is named after. Does anyone know who it is? Is there a story behind it? Thanks for getting back to me. Your information does help. My files, which I would like to e-mail you, are in Family Tree Maker, version 3.4. Can you read it? If you can I will send it to you or convert it to something else if you tell me how. Thanks again. Ned Jones
Jim, There is no proof that Peter Heite is actually the Peter Hitt who immigrated to Virginia in 1717. There is only the "possibility" and/or the "suggestion" by B. C. Holtzclaw that the two men are one and the same; absolutely NO PROOF. The will date is for Peter Hitt. Peter Heite did marry Maria Liessbeth Freudenberg in 1707 and that is the last record that exists for this couple. There is no record of children, no record of deaths, and no record that Heite ever changed his name to Hitt. We do know that Peter HITT was married a woman named Elizabeth (no surname) and that she was the mother of Peter's children. There is no record of Peter Hitt marrying Elizabeth Otterback/Utterbach, there is only the "suggestions" made by B. C. Holtzclaw in Germanna Record No. 5. The Peter Hitt family has always spelled their name HITT, there are no instances of his ever spelling his name Heite (pronounced like: High-Tee in German). There is additional information about the above controversy at my web site: http://www.geocities.com/heartland/prairie/3596/ I envite you to visit, read and/or copy the information. Earl J. Hitt

Georgann, The following is from my computer data base: Descendants of William Newton HITT - 27 Feb 1998 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --- 1. William Newton HITT was born on 5 Dec 1837 in Gadsden, Etowah County, Alabama. He died about 1913 in Piggott, Clay County, Arkansas. After the civil war, William Newton did not return home. Instead, he settled in Arkansas and there married again. The children from his second marriage were found in Clay County, Arkansas in 1934. William was married to Sarah Ann NORMAN (daughter of John M. NORMAN and Lucinda BAYLES) about 1862 in Marshall County, Alabama. Sarah Ann NORMAN was born on 5 Dec 1838 in South Carolina. She died about 1875 in Piggott, Clay County, Arkansas. William Newton HITT and Sarah Ann NORMAN had the following children: +2 i. William Henry HITT b. abt 1864 AL, m. Elizabeth Thomas. +3 ii. James Robert HITT b. abt 1866 AL, m. Mary Caroline Rigdon . +4 iii. Martin Newman HITT b. 26 Sep 1867 AL, m. Nancy Emmaline Hill. +5 iv. Joseph Jackson HITT b. Jun 1870 AL, m. Claudia Duke. William was married second to Mary A. DAVIS (? questionable) about 1878 in Arkansas. William Newton HITT and Mary A. DAVIS had the following children: +6 i. General Hood HITT b. abt 1879 Clay Co. AR, m. Ellen Brown. +7 ii. Sarah Ann HITT b. abt 1881 Clay Co., m. Dock Jewell. +8 iii. Thomas Jefferson HITT b. abt 1881 Clay Co., m. Sudie Owens. +9 iv. Lee/Dee HITT b. abt 1889 Clay Co., m. Birdie Reynolds. William was married third to Melvina ROBINSON on 30 Sep 1905. --------------------------------End Notes I have not actively researched the above, so I am presenting it as a possibility. If you have better information, I certainly would like to have it. I now believe that Woodrow Wilson Hitt b. 17 Jul 1917 Buckholts, TX, son of Martin Newman and Nancy Ann (Hill) Hitt, is the Woodrow W. of the original message. Earl J. Christy, Do you have father of Alex Hitt? Do you know location of Alex Hitt on 1790 federal census? He may have been in Orange Co NC with John Willis. I have this on Rhoda Dodson, and Alexander Hitts on 1785 Halifax Co VA census. <<From Carol Hammett: This Raleigh Dodson was 1st cuz to Thomas Dodson of Halifax VA to Hawkins TN. -Three of Thomas Dodson's daughters married Johnsons: William, Stephen and James Johnson but I've never been able to confirm that they were of Halifax VA also, although probable. More on them if you're interested; however, Raleigh Dodson moved from Caswell Co, NC to Dodson's Creek, Holston River TN. Land he owned xferred to Robert BROWN (RW) who sold in 1797 to my Martin (and Sarah Combs) Johnson. Neighbors included Jacob Lawson, Miles BARRETT, John WILLIS, John PAYNE, all probably from Henry VA... another of Thomas Dodson's daughters, Rhoda, married an Alexander Hittson, except Pittsylvania marriage bonds show him as Alexander HITT, not Hittson... AND Thos Dodson named his daughter in his will in Hawkins TN as HITT, not Hittson; however, when estate settled, Alexander HITTSON was beneficiary on behalf of wife Rhoda DODSON.--cwh, see Alexander Hitts on 1785 Halifax VA census. See Thomas Dodson Sr in Fauquier VA--see Joseph Hitt in Pr William
