I am a descendant of Aldridge Hitt, who was born 1801 and died in 1896, according to his headstone in Gaines Cemetary, Hopedale Twp., Tazewell Co., Illinois. His wife Catherine was born 1810 and died 1882, according to her stone. There is no death certificate for either of them in the Tazewell County records. The 1850 census gives their places of birth as Virginia. Their children were: 1.Philip, b. abt.1829, Kentucky. m. Martha B. Davis, 15 Dec. 1853, Tazewell Co., Illinois 2.Elizabeth (my ancestor) b. 1 June 1834, Kentucky. m. James Samuel McQueen, 25 Dec. 1851, Tazewell Co., Illinois (James born 15 April 1829, Culpeper Co., Virginia) d. 20 April 1907, Tazewell Co., Illinois 3.Mary Eliza, b. abt. 1836, Illinois m. Charles Thomas McQueen, 27 Dec. 1855, Tazewell Co., Illinois 4.Harriet, b. abt. 1838, Illinois 5.Josephine, b. abt. 1841, Illinois 6.Ellen, b. abt. 1845, Illinois 7.John S., b. 22 Feb. 1849, Illinois m. Mary Catherine ____ d. 8 May 1923, Tazewell Co., Illinois 8.Peter V., b. 1851, Illinois m. Emma____ d. 1926, Illinois 9.Kate, b. abt. 1856. Any information that anybody might have about this family would be greatly appreciated. (Especially Aldridge's parents' names). Ronald R. Bischer
If I said that Sarah was born 1726, then I was in error (type, I hope). May data show Sarah James b. about 1738, d. abt 1822, m. 27 Apr 1759 Peter Hitt b. 1726, d. 1810. Sarah was 21 when she married. She was the dau. of John and Dinah (Allen) James of Stafford County, Va. I show John James as the son of Francis James. I have not researched the James family in any depth past John James and Dinah Allen. Sarah was 22 when her first child was born and 38 when her last child was born. Without further study, I would rather not comment on the data that Eric James supplied to you on the James family. Hope the above is of some assistance. Earl J. Earl, I am confused again. I am unable to find the birth date of Sarah James. Neither Germanna #1, #5 or Phillips and Myers mention her birth date. Germanna #1 p. 41 list her death as 1822. Eric James supplied me with the following on his James family. You stated that she was born about 1726 which would make her mother ten when she was born. It would also make her 53 when her last child was born. If she was born in 1748 as Eric states she would have been 11 years old when she got married. Neither date seems to fit. Any ideas? 1. Don't know what your point is, but the Peter Hitt I discussed in my original message is the son of Peter Hitt, 1714 immigrant to Germanna in the Virginia Colony. Although I have not seen the reference you cite, there is insufficient information and/or facts to assume that Peter Hitt, 1714 immigrant, was Peter Heite who married Maria Liesbeth Freudenberg in 1707. There is no proof that Peter Hitt, 1714 immigrant, had more than one wife. If you are interested in the controversy surounding the immigrant Peter Hitt, please refer to my web page where you will find the salient sources and a discussion of all the theories surrounding Peter and his wife. http://www.geocities.com/heartland/prairie/3596/ Earl J. It appears that Myers & Phillips were mistaken about this Peter Hitt, or at least confused. As far as I can tell, Hannah James married Charles Hume in 1764; she is identified in the will of her father as Hannah Hume. Peter HITT was born after 1756 in Fauquier County, Virginia. He died on 31 Aug 1802 in Fauquier County, Virginia. Will: 7 Aug 1802, Fauquier Will Book 3, page 40. The lists of tithables in Fauquier County, Virginia list three Peter Hitts beginning in 1782, however, in 1796 only two were shown. In 1798 there were four Peter Hitts, and in 1799 there were only three. Needless to say, it is difficult to distinquish between these men. Peter served in the Revolutionary War. His wife, Hannah, applied for a pension; and the index to the pension file states: Hitt, Peter, Hannah, W7732, Va Line, sol lived in Fauquier Co. Va at enl. & he married there to Hannah (---) in April 1783 & sol died 31 Aug 1802, wid appl 7 Sept 1841 Fauquier Co, Va, aged 78, several children mentioned. The will of Peter Hitt, dated 17 August 1802, was proved on 25 October 1802. It named his wife, Hannah, and his children as heirs. Peter was married to Hannah ???? on 1 Apr 1783 in Fauquier County, Virginia. Hannah ???? was born on 3 Jan 1763 and she died in Aug 1846 in Fauquier County, Virginia. Hannah was living at Leeds Manor, Fauquier County, Virginia, in 1841. Peter HITT and Hannah ???? had the following children: 2 i. Presley Russell HITT. 3 ii. Harrison Churchill HITT. 4 iii. Alexander HITT 5 iv. Mary HITT. 6 v. Susannah "Susan" HITT. 7 vi. Thaddeus N. HITT. 8 vii. Nancy HITT. 9 viii. Frances D. "Fanny" HITT. 10 ix. Elizabeth HITT. 11 x. Hannah HITT. SOURCES 1. Sarah was the daughter of Stephen Hitt. Stephen was the son of John Hitt, Jr., grandson of John Hitt, and great-grandson of Peter Hitt, 1714 immigrant to Germanna in the Virginia colony. The following is from my computer data base. Descendants of Stephen HITT - 5 Apr 1998 1. Stephen HITT[1,2] was born about 1788/89. He died about 1841 in Fauquier County, Virginia. Stephen is first listed as a tithable with his mother's family in 1805 which indicates that he was born about 1788/89. On 24 February 1806, Nathan Hitt older brother of Stephen was appointed guardian of Stephen. He posted a bond of $200 with a second brother, John Hitt, as security. He was married to Hannah BAILEY (daughter of Stephen BAILEY) on 18 Dec 1809 in Fauquier County, Virginia.[3] Date of marriage bond 18 December 1809.4 Hannah BAILEY died before 31 Dec 1817 in Fauquier County, Virginia. Bond record notes that Hannah is the daughter of Stephen Bailey. Hannah must have died before 31 December 1817, as this is the date Stephen married for the second time. He was married to Sarah LOW on 31 Dec 1817 in Fauquier County, Virginia.[5] Date of marriage bond 31 December 1817. John Hanback was the bondsman.[6,4] Sarah LOW[7] was born about 1779. Sarah was living with her daughter and son-in-law, James Robert Hitt, when the 1850 Federal Census was taken. She gave her age as 71. Stephen HITT and Sarah LOW had the following children: +2 i. Elizabeth HITT. +3 ii. Sarah HITT married 10 Oct 1846 in Fauquier Co., Va. Stephen Julious FLETCHER +4 iii. Judith "Judy" HITT. +5 iv. Marshall HITT. +6 v. Martin HITT. SOURCES 1. Bob, This is a subject that come up periodically. No one has ever established that John Proudfoot married a Hitt, but most likely married a Hite. Many of the early Hitt researchers looked into this possibility and found no link between a Hitt and the Proudfoot family, I don't have the references at hand at this moment. Therefore, I have not investigated this link any further, and have no information on Lenore. Sorry, wish you luck in your search. Earl J. Hitt -----Original Message----- From: Robert M. Earl, thanks for reply that you have no Lawson-Hitt marriages. Saw both names on Yvonne's family list and thought she might have info in Orange NC or Halifax VA. Saw this Lawson in Fauquier Co VA 26 May 1767, Gavin Lawson Pltf. ag. John Duncan (son of Joseph) Deft.; in Case. Charles Hite
I'am looking for any information on my Great Grandfather, William Franklin Hitt, born 9 Oct. 1857 in Miss. His Parents are believed to have come from the Carolina's. William Franklin Hitt married Sara Regina Roberts Jolley in Miss. They had 4 sons born in Blue Springs, Miss They were James Layfett, Jess Young, Mark, and Thomas Partee Hitt. William Franklin Hitt and his family moved to Okla in the late 1890's. William Franklin Hitt had 2 brothers, G.M. Hitt who stayed in Miss and Abiner who moved to Texas. Thanks. James M.(Mike) Hitt
Cousins, I'm having no success with my attempt to help a neighbor with her line. Her mother was Myrtle Hitt who was b c 1900 and died about 5 years ago. She knew her father Thomas Lee Hitt, Jr. of course and was told that his father was Thomas Lee Hitt, Sr. and thinks he was b in Tn. about 1815. He was m to Mary E. Lambert Hitt. Thos. Lee was the son of Armistead Jackson Hitt and Annie ? and Mary E. Lambert Hitt was the daughter of Dudley David Hitt, Sr. and Susan Elkins, she thought. Can anyone help with any of this. Thanks, JB
Maybe the following will be of some assistance. Harman Miller(Mueller) and Henry Hitt were brothers-in-law; they married sisters, daughters of Hans Jacob Holtzclaw and his wife, Anna Margaret Otterbach. Daughter, Elizabeth, married Harman Miller b. 1716 in Germany and d. Halifax Co. VA. Daughter, Alice Katherine, married Henry Hitt, son of Peter Hitt 1714 immigrant to Germanna, b. abt 1719 at Germanna and d. abt 1783 in Edgefield Co. SC. On 15 November 1764, John Lawson, Jr. of Orange County, North Carolina deeded to Henry Hitt of Halifax County 202 acres of land on the South Side of Dan River (Halifax County, Virginia Deed Book 5, p. 249). On 12 October 1779, Henry deeded to John Dicke 202 acres of land in Halifax County. (Halifax County, Virginia Deed Book 11, p. 371). Based upon the land records, it is believed that Henry and Alice moved from Culpeper County to Halifax County, Virginia in about 1759 and were living in South Carolina in 1779. If there is a Lawson - Hitt connection other than the above, I have found no such record. Earl J. Hitt
