Phillips and Myers show that Peter married Hannah James on 23 June 1796; his first seven children were born prior to that date. This leads me to believe that he must have had another wife. The Germanna Record #1 says that all ten children were the issue of Peter and Hannah. Does anyone better information? DOB of Hannah? Gordon Lane Sewanee

Judith, thanks for looking at Tn. for me. That James S. in 1840 is James Samuels Hitt who m Nancy Cunningham. He was b in 1804. These Hitts may all be related to T.L. or Thomas Lee or whatever name he went by, but I can't make the connection. The Joel you mentioned is my gguncle who m Sarah Kellar, the daughter of a well known and well like preacher in Oldham Co. That Joel's father was my ancestor. If you should run across more Tn. Hitt's, I'd love to hear from you. JB
Dear Judith, I saw your response to Donna in regard to this family and I immediately wondered if you are familiar with any other Hitts in Davidson Co. about that time. My line is Peter,Peter,Joel (came to Oldham Co,Ky.), James Weaver Hitt, John,Louis,JB,JB. I have a neighbor Evelyn Norfleet whose line beginning with her mother Myrtle Hitt goes back to Thomas Lee, Thomas Lee, then perhaps Armistead Jackson Hitt. Thomas Lee,Jr. was b 1869 thus that family should be in 1870 census but I have not found them. Thomas Lee was known to both Myrtle and Evelyn so we know he existed. Do you have any information on this branch? Is there anything you need on Bourbon Co. Hitt's that I might have? Any help would be appreciated. JB

We are probably related way back in Virginia, but I don't know how (yet). I live not far from a branch of the National Archives and I go there about once a week and do census research. I saw your query and thought I might be able to find your Susie, so went through the 1880 TN soundex until I found her. Here is what is on the soundex card: Davisdon Co., TN 1880, Dist. #20 Hitt, Peter 40 TN (birthplace) Mary J. 35 " John W. 18 " Jessie J. 15 " Anne 11 " Robert E. 8 " Susie N. 7 " Jennie 10/12 " If you wish, I can get you the full census record next time I go. The full record gives more info, like occupations and birthplaces of parents of everyone, the latter being the most important usually. Soundex is just an index/abstract. I also have 1-12 of FTM. Just got the last bunch this week. In fact, my line is on #12. I think its number is 50 on that disc. Check it out. My Hitts went from VA to Bourbon Co., KY, then on west (MO). You're very welcome. Judith
To Donna, There was a Susie N. Hitt in Davidson Co., TN 1880, age 7, daughter of Peter and Mary J. Hitt. If you don't have this record, e-mail me and I'll give you the details. Judith

I am sorry to post this to the list, I realize it is not allowed, but Patti Ashcraft, if you see this, I have been trying to send you Hitt information, but your mail keeps bouncing. Edie
Does anyone have any info on whose Susie's parents were? She was born May 1873 Tn per Census; married Thomas J. Lowery 14 May 1891 Davidson Co., TN; Children were Mary B., Susie B., Minnie A., Thomas J., and Jessie H. Thanks, Donna
Bad typing! Perhaps the following will clarify the errors. Margaret "Peggy" Hitt was born about 1782, she was 18 years old when she married Lystra Vaughn/Baughn. I think you have two John Hitts mixed up. John Hitt b. 4 June 1797, married Elizabeth A. Vaughn on 22 February 1822 in Culpeper, was the eldest son of Joseph and Rhoda (Marshall) Hitt III. Joel Hitt did have a son named John born 20 March 1800 (sixth child) probably in Fauquier Co., VA. Not much is known about this John Hitt, and I have found no record of a marriage. On 9 May 1810, Elizabeth Hitt of Henry County, Kentucky, widow of Joel Hitt and guardian of the heirs of Joel, namely, Fanny Hitt (Fanny Button), Nancy Hitt, William Hitt, James W. Hitt, Joel Hitt, and John Hitt, appoint Archibald Holtzclaw her attorney to secure the estate left to Joel Hitt by his father, Peter Hitt, decd. (Fauquier County, Virginia Deed Book 17, page 730). Joel Hitt and all his children moved to Kentucky, Oldham County, and I would suspect that Johh also moved there, but have not found a record. William Young Hitt moved on to Missouri and settled in Boone County. I will make the appropriate changes at my web site, thanks. Earl J. Thank you for your message. William "Billy" Hitt was the son of Joseph Hitt, Jr. (unknown wife). Joseph Hitt Jr. was the son of Joseph and Mary (Coons) Hitt, Sr. Joseph, Sr. was the son of Peter Hitt the 1714 immigrant to Germanna in the Virginia Colony. The following is from my Hitt data base: 1. William "Billy" HITT[1] was born about 1786 in Culpeper County, Virginia and he died on 1 Nov 1865. William is believed to have served in the War of 1812 and that his widow Polly applied for a pension based upon her husband's service. (War of 1812: Virginia; Bounty Land and Pension Applicants; by Patrick G. Wardell; Heritage Books; p. 203). The will of Joseph Hitt, Jr., identifies William as a son and heir (Will Book K, page 228, Culpeper County, Virginia, written 2 November 1825, proved 21 February 1826). William Hitt was a farmer. The marriage of William and Polly Aylor can be found in Madison County, Virginia, Marriage Book 1, page 262. The family can be found in the 1850 and 1860 Census for Culpeper County, Virginia. In the 1850 Census, Martin Aylor age 53 was living with the William Hitt family. It is believed that Martin was a brother of William's wife Mary "Pollie" (Aylor) Hitt. Also a child, Sarah F. Aylor age 7, was living with the family; perhaps a daughter of Martin Aylor. In the 1860 Census, Sarah F. Aylor, age 18, was still living with the William Hitt family. He was married to Mary "Polly" AYLOR (daughter of Jacob AYLOR and Frances MURRAY) on 24 Feb 1814 in Madison County, Virginia.[2,3] Bond was issued 21 February 1814.[2,4] Mary "Polly" AYLOR was born about 1794 in Madison County, Virginia. Marriage Bond record notes that Polly is the daughter of Jacob Aylor. William "Billy" HITT and Mary "Polly" AYLOR had the following children: +2 i. Frances (Margaret) HITT b. 1816/17 m. Hampton Thornhill. +3 ii. Henry Thomas HITT b. 1818 m. Emily Jane Hitt. +4 iii. Charles Morgan HITT b. 1821 m. Eliza Jane Jenkins. +5 iv. William Jacob HITT b. 1827 m. Ellen M. Kilby. +6 v. Peter appears in the 1800 Tax List for Fauquier County, Virginia, listed as Peter Hitt, Jr. In the 1807 personal property tax list for Fauquier County, Peter's widow, Lucy O., is shown with no tithables but with personal property, which establishes Peter's death in 1806 or 1807. On 24 January 1810 after Peter's death, George James (second husband of Lucy (Rosser) Hitt) was appointed guardian of his Peter's children: Lucinda Hitt, Polly Hitt, Aldridge Hitt, Nimrod Hitt, and Elizabeth Hitt. Securitor's were: William James and Reuben Hitt, brother of Peter. On 23 November 1818, John Miller (husband of Nancy Hitt and sister of Peter) was appointed guardian of Peter's children: Lucinda Hitt, Polly Hitt, Aldridge Hitt, Nimrod Hitt, and Betsey (Elizabeth) Hitt. On 28 September 1819, Thomas Smoot (husband of Elizabeth Hitt daughter of Peter and Hannah (James) Hitt and a distant cousin) was appointed guardian of Peter's youngest daughter, Elizabeth Hitt. On 28 December 1819, Asa Hume was appointed guardian of Peter's four youngest children: Mary (Polly) Hitt, Aldridge Hitt, Nimrod Hitt, and Elizabeth Hitt. Peter Hitt died leaving no will. His children are named in Fauquier County, Virginia Deed Book 18, pp.186-187, when the land they received in the in the distribution of the estate of their grandfather, Peter Hitt, Jr., was sold to their uncle, Rueben Hitt. They were also named in the will of their uncle, Nimrod Hitt (Culpeper County, Virginia Will Book K, p. 170), but their relationship was not clear. There is a Chancery Court case, Hitt vs Hitt Heirs, in Augusta County in 1870 that may have new information. Peter was married to Lucinda "Lucy" ROSSER on 23 Aug 1796 in Fauquier County, Virginia.[5,6] Bond was made on 9 July 1796.[7,8] Peter HITT and Lucinda "Lucy" ROSSER had the following children: +2 i. Lucinda HITT. 3 ii. Mary "Polly" HITT [9,2,10] was born on 14 Jul 1800 in Fauquier County, Virginia. She died about 1882 in Rappahannock County, Virginia. Polly was named an heir in the will of her uncle, Nimrod Hitt, probated in Culpeper County on 19 September 1825. Mary was living in a boarding house in Rappahannock County Virginia in 1850. She died unmarried. +4 iii. Aldridge A. HITT. +5 iv. Nimrod Milton HITT MD. +6 v. Elizabeth HITT. SOURCES [1]. Fauquier County, Virginia, Guardian Bonds 1759-1871; by Gott. [2].
