Mary, The book reference is interesting, however, I suggest that you investigate further before assuming that it is correct. This possible link of a Leanor Hitt to the family of Peter Hitt the 1714 immigrant has been raised on many occasions in the past. A couple of researchers believe that Leanor may have been a HILT. Some researchers, especially Proudfoot researchers, have investigated the possible link of an Leanor Hitt to the Peter Hitt family but none, to my knowledge, has ever been able to prove such a link. The most interesting part of the reference is the reference to "Mrs. Proudfoot's uncles, John and Peter Hitt, soldiers in the revolution." Why are uncles named and not her father. In 1992 while researching the work of Jesse Martin Hitt, an early Hitt researcher now deceased, I found the following note, on some old Genealogy Tables attributed to Jesse Martin, which addressed the subject of Leanor Hitt: "Mr. Hitt - State Librarian collected Hitt material. He may have compiled a book. I never connected my Leanner Hitt who married John Proudfoot. s/ Myrtle Ledrow Emberson, Los Angeles, 1937 - June." The referenced Genealogy Tables are in the Public Library of the City of Los Angeles; title page "Peter Hitt of Virginia." I would be interested if the book you referenced also included source for the material it published. And, I hope you are able to prove the link, as it would resolve a controversy that has gone on for many years. Earl J. Hitt -----Original Message----- From: Mary E. [I apologize if this comes through twice, I didn't get it back the first time I tried to post...] I had always wondered about the Proudfoot line, now in the process of searching the net for a source for the book you mentioned, I ran across this interesting URL: Barbour County Families - HITT FAMILY -- Descendants of Bathalsar Heite, six generations in Barbour Co. , by David Kuhl at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~wvbarbou/hittdk.htm Also, I found a source for the book at: http://wvweb.com/www/MPC/ ---------- From: HITT-L-request To: HITT-L Subject: Leonor HITT (d. 1829) & John PROUDFOOT (d. 1823) Date: Tuesday, June 09, 1998 11:49AM When researching another matter, I came across the following description in the "Family History" section of a book called "History of Barbour County, West Virginia - From its Earliest Exploration and Settlement to the Present Time" by Hu Maxwell (1899 - Acme Publishing Co., Morgantown, WV - reprinted in 1997 by McClain Publishing Co., Parsons, WV). Hi All, If you have tried to access any of the Rootsweb pages, you will know that they are down. Here is a note from the server owner. We are hoping to be back at full capacity by early next week. HARDWARE STILL BROKEN (Friday ... ) Date: Friday, June 05, 1998 8:31 AM > The good news is that the failing drive is now out of the machine, > and the disks are organized such that we can easily move them to a > newer and faster machine. > > The bad news is that the old server is still overloaded. We had > hoped the new drives (which are much faster than the old drive) > would have helped reduce the load on the server, but we still have > capacity problems. We obviously still have stability problems on the old Web server. I'm in the process of replacing all the adapter boards, with especial prejudice concerning the SCSI disk controller. Regardless of whether I can get the old server to stay up, we'll have the new server online within the next couple of days. That should fix the problem in a permanent sense. -B Good luck in your quest, Yvonne, List Administrator ****** Yvonne James-Henderson, Burke, VA MO USGenWeb Archives Manager http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/mo/mofiles.htm NC USGenWeb Archive Manager http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/nc/ncfiles.htm DC USGenWeb Archive Manager http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/dc/dcfiles.htm ****** My Family Discussion Lists: BALLEAU BRISBIN COOKSEY GALBRAITH HITT HORN KENTON LAWSON LUCKY MORROW SWEET ZIMMERMAN Also researching JAMES/WRIGHT/WALLACE/WOODS//EATON/DRAKE/ FORSYTHE/WALKER/RUSSELL/DAVIS/BOOKOUT/BARNEY/REYNOLDS/ BUMP/HENDERSON/MCCLURG and more! The following is taken from Phillips and Myers who have been incorrect many times: "MARTIN HITT m. 1. Molly (Polly) James on 1-1-1791. She was a sister to Sanie, who married John Day Hitt. Martin and Molly had six children before she died. After the death of Molly, Martin married Lucy Bussey, dau. of John, and they had three children." She names the children of Lucy as Martin, Jesse, and Sarah with no dates given. "MARTIN HITT (1-15-1780 6-26-1869) Martin was born in Edgefield District, South Carolina. He married Lucy Bussey on 12-24-1801. Lucy was the daughter of Reverend Charles Bussey of Edgefield." The first Martin was the son of John b. 1715. The second Martin was the son of John b. 1746. My question is. . . are there really two Lucys and if so are they related? Can anyone supply dates? Thanks for your usual help. Gordon Grant Lane Sewanee
Dear All Hitt cousins.... Its so very strange that just last Saturday I conducted the funeral of my brother's friend of 50 years in Memphis and I used the text in Ecclesiastes (3:1-8 ) for my funeral message with the emphasis on the Dash between birth and death as being the most important part of life...the only part that we have any control over. "A time to be born and a time to die" vs. 2. Wish I'd had this poem to use....it would have added much to the message. Thanks, Robert E. Walker P.S. MY wife is a descendant of Rev. David Hitt of S. C. - Alabama (Green County.) Married Jane Meek. Their son, Rev.John Milton Hitt was my wife's great great grandfather. His daughter, Martha Hitt m. Dr. John B. Lyle and were my wifes great Grandparents. Would be happy to exchange information with anyone have connections to these Hitts.

I did not feel that this was "relavant" to the group. It could have just been another typo. When I see an obvious error, I feel it is proper to address it to that person. It serves no useful purpose to bring it up in public; but, in the future I will address ALL messages to the group. Little by little I am chipping away at my barriers. Any one who can help with this family, please do. The 1880 census for Greenville Co. SC (Grove Turnpike) lists George R. Hitt, (age 25) married to Mary A. Holcomb? (age 18) parents of my ggrandmother Isabel C. (aka Cassie Isabella age 1) and Mary A. (age 2 months). They lived next door to James A. Hitt (age 57), presumably Geroge's father and James' wife Elindeer C. _________ (age 50) and Frances E. (age 17). I can't find any of these folks in the 1870, 60, or 50 census in SC (Yet all of them were born in SC and James and Elindeer's parents also born in SC.) Any clue to their origins? Any relation to children of Peter Hitt (who died in Greenville S.C. in 1836)? Any help would be sincerely appreciated. Eric
Have Hight-Nichols in Lunenburg VA, 1770. What Co in Indiana for James Hite? I am looking for the parents of Carrie Hite b. 5-11-1850 in Ind. I believe that her parents are James Hite and Ann Nickols. Is anyone researching this family? Thank you. Jacque Hansen JHansen457@aol.com

I don't know that I can help you Eric, but I have a similar problem. My grand mother was Mahulda Cathrine Hitt b. GA, the daughter of Benjamin C. and Elizabeth Morris Hitt. Elizabeth was B. C.'s 2nd Wife. In my case also family legend has it that my grandmother was part Cherokee Indian. Whether this comes through the Hitt or Morris lines I do not know. Benjamin was born in SC abt 1827 the son of James and Mary Mitchell Hitt. James and Mary had the following children: James, Jr., Sarah, Susannah, Thomas, Huldah, Jean, Lenard, Nancy, Rebecca, Elender, George, Benjamin C., Martha, and David all born between 1807 and 1830 in SC. B. C. moved to Cherokee County, GA some time before 1870. Whether this was before or after the death of his first wife, Sarah Ann Frances Swinford in 1864 I do not know. I have just started to work on the Hitt line but will share any information I find.
I am pleased to be joining this list and look forward to learning more about the Hitt family. If anyone can help me I would appreciate it. My ggrandmother Cassie Isabella Hitt was born in Greenville, Co. SC about 1880 to J.R. (G.R.) and M.A. Hitt (nee Alice Holcomb?, family legend has it that M.A. was at least part Cherokee). By 1896 Cassie was in Danville (Pittsylvania County) in Southern Virginia where she married William R. Neathery 23 years her senior. Supposedly, Cassie had 12 siblings all girls (one who may have been named Katie) except a boy who died young. J.R. and M.A. are also supposed to have been born in South Carolina. I know nothing more about this line. It is an important line for me but has been a big dead end in my researches. Is there any connection to any of your research? I would love to be able to share anything I have. Best Regards, Eric Rodenburg Arlington, VA
I recently received two obituaries and I am forwarding them to the list in the event that the information may be helpful to others. In regard to the obituary of Joseph Newton HITT, Jr., (b, 1875 MS, d. 1931 TX) I would especially appreciate hearing from anyone who can provide the given names of his married daughters and sisters. All the married women in this obituary notice were identified (as was the custom at the time) by their husband's names -- e.g., Mrs. Stanley COOK. Although Joseph Newton HITT, JR is listed as the son of Joseph Newton Hitt, I am uncertain whether this is correct. Another researcher has suggested from 1880 Hinds Co., MS census records that his father may have been Samuel J. Hitt, b, 1841 AL. If anyone has any further information on this, I would appreciate it. Thanks in advance for any help. Mary E.
