hi does anyone have any information on wife of James Hitt that married MITCHEL? her parents? siblings? thanks barb
Earl please your comments on the following information. I think that the James Hitt that Barb is looking for is James b1784 s/o of Peter b 1763. Descendants of Peter Hitt Generation No. 1 1. PETER1 HITT was born 1763 in VA, and died 1836 in Greenville Co., SC. He married (1) UNKNOWN Bef. 1780. He married (2) MARY (HITT) Abt. 1818. Notes for PETER HITT: Names of children taken from will of Peter Hitt probated April 25, 1836 in Greenville Co., SC Children of PETER HITT and UNKNOWN are: 2. i. JAMES2 HITT, b. October 1784. ii. ELIZABETH HITT. iii. WILLIAM HITT. iv. NANCY HITT. v. JOHN HITT. vi. HENRY HITT. vii. ROBERT HITT. viii. SUSANNAH HITT. ix. THOMAS HITT. Children of PETER HITT and MARY (HITT) are: x. JOSEPH2 HITT, b. Abt. 1820. xi. ELISHA P. HITT, b. Abt. 1822. xii. JANE HITT, b. Abt. 1824. Generation No. 2 2. JAMES2 HITT (PETER1) was born October 1784. He married MARY MITCHEL. Notes for JAMES HITT: James Hitt appears in the 1840 census of Pickens County, SC with 1male 5-10, 1male 10-15, 1 male 15-20, 1male 50-60, 1 female 10-15, 1 female 15-20, 3 females 20-30, and 1 female 50-60. Most of the children of James and Mary appear in the 1850 Census of Cherokee County GA. There appears to be an error in the ages of the Hitt household headed by Mahulda Hitt. The ages of Mahulda, Jane, Nancy, and Rebecca appear to be off by 5 years when compared to data collected from Hitt family members by my Aunt Essie Rogers who is now near 90 years of age. Also they do not fit with ages of George and Benjamin C. Hitt listed as heads of household in the same census. B. C. Hitt's birthdate established from Biblical records. Children of JAMES HITT and MARY MITCHEL are: i. JAMES3 HITT, JR, b. October 13, 1807. ii. SARAH HITT, b. January 18, 1809. iii. SUSANNAH HITT, b. December 25, 1810. iv. THOMAS HITT, b. ROBERT (PETE) ROGERS, October 07, 1904. Notes for MAHULDA CATHRINE (KATHRYN) HITT: Buried at Cassville, GA Notes for ROBERT (PETE) ROGERS: Robert appears in the 1910 Census of Pickens Co. Barbara, Here is some information for you to consider. The following is all the information I have on James Hitt, son of Henry Hitt: 1. James HITT[1,2] was born about 1761 in Virginia. James gave an acre of land, which included a house, for a church on 24 December 1794 (Halifax County Deed Book 22, p. 560). He bought 80 acres of land from Edwin Garlington, next to Moses & Burrell Grant, on 28 April 1794 (Deed Book 16, page 161). James served in the revolutionary war. He moved to Tennessee where the first record of a James Hitt is in the 1820 Federal Census for Montgomery County. In his household he listed: 1 male 10-16 years, 1 male over 45 years, 1 female 10-16 years, 1 female 16-26 years, and 1 female over 45 years old. His son James H. Hitt was listed next to him in the census. According to Myers and Phillips he later moved to Alabama. He was married to Polly GRANT (daughter of Burrell GRANT) on 24 Oct 1792 in Halifax County, Virginia.[3,4] James HITT and Polly GRANT had the following children: 2 i. James H. HITT was born between 1800 and 1810. SOURCES [1.] Ruby Cox Eddleman; copyright 1983. For example, the 1830 census gives 1 male 40-50 (James would have been about 43) and 1 female 30-40 (his wife would have been about 40). James the son of Joseph Hitt, Jr. has been very elusive, and there is very little information on him. However, he is a very good candidate as the father of your James Hitt: 1. Joseph HITT Jr.[1,2,3,4] was born about 1742/43 in Fauquier County, Virginia. He died before 21 Feb 1826 in Culpeper County, Virginia. Joseph came to Culpeper County, Virginia about 1778 and lived there until his death. He is listed in the Culpeper tithables after 1790 (Geramnna Record No. 1, p.23). Joseph probably could not read or write English as on 21 January 1778 he witnessed a will for Bromfill Long by signing with his mark (Ref: Bromfil Long's will, St. Mark's Parish, Culpeper County, Virginia, dated 21 January 1778, proved 20 July 1778). Joseph patented land in Culpeper County: "Joseph Hitt assignee of French Strother assignee of William Thompson heir at law to Rev. John Thompson dec'd. 150 A. (9 Feb 1747) in Culpeper County in Great Fork of Rappahannock River adj. said Thompson, Samuel Coleman. 14 Mar 1798. (Inclosed F. Strother 10 May 1798)" (Patent Book Y, page 28). A Joseph Hitt appears in the 1800 Tax List for Culpeper County, Virginia, District of David Brown. He is listed as owning three horses. This listing could be for Joseph Hitt's son Joseph Hitt III. (Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, Vol 62, No. 1, January 1954, p. 124). The 1820 Federal Census, page 78, lists Joseph, age 45+, and his wife, age 45+, with two slaves.. The will of Joseph Hitt, Jr. (Will Book K, page 228, Culpeper County, Virginia) was written on 2 November 1825 and proved on 21 February 1826. (This will can only be that of Joseph, Jr. If it were the will of Joseph, Sr. he would have been 108 years old when it was written.) Joseph's wife must have died before he made his will as there is no mention of her in his will. The will lists his heirs as: sons William, John, Joseph, James; daughters Peggy Vaughn (Baughn) and Mary Barnes. His third daughter died before the will was written. The text of the will is as follows: In the name of God Amen I Joseph Hitt of the County of Culpeper and State of Virginia being oald and infirm But of sound mind and memory do make and constitute this my last Will and Testament hereby revoaking all wills by me heretofore made as to what worldly goods it hath pleased God to bestow on me my wish is that it be disposed of in the following manner. First that my executor hereafter named out of my personal estate pay all my just debts and the residue if any I wish desposed of in the following manner I give and bequeath to my son William Hitt the land whereon he now resideth as surveyed by Wiat Camp containing one hundred and sixty seven acres more or less on his paying to the Trustee of Betsey Baughan hereafter named one hundred dollars To my daughter Mary Barnes one hundred dollars To my daughter Peggy Baughan one hundred dollars and that my Executor out of my personal estate pay to the said Trustee of Betsey Baughan twenty five dollars To Mary Barnes twenty five dollars and to Peggy Baughan twenty five dollars and the residue of my land whereon I now liv I giv I give and bequeath to my three sons, to wit, John Hitt Joseph Hitt and James Hitt to be equally divided between them the residue of my estate of every discription my will and desire is that it be divided in the following manner my son John Hitt to have one seventh part my son Joseph Hitt one seventh part that my son William Hitt have one seventh part that my son James have one seventh part and that the Trustee of Betsey Baughan have one seventh part with the twenty five dollars above mentioned with the balance that will be coming to her seventh part at the final settlement of my estate and that he pay her annually the legal Interest and at her deceas to be eaqually divided btween all her children To my Daughter Mary Barnes one seventh part To my Daughter Peggy Baughan one seventh part and lastly I do nominate and appoint my son William Hitt Executor of this my last Will and Testament and also Trustee for my Daugther Betsey Baughan In witness hereof I have hereunto fixed my hand seal this 2nd day of November 1825 NB it is my wish that my Executor pay my son James Hitt one Feather Bed & furniture to Betsey Baughan one Bead and Furniture. Witness Present his Daniel Broson Joseph X Hitt Seal James Hitt mark Thomas C. Brown Joseph's estate was inventoried by Joel Baughan, Leroy Kilby and Joseph R. Sibert and given a value of $736.30. An estate sale was held on 3 March 1836. The following Hitt Family members were among the purchasers at Joseph's estate sale: Joseph, William, John, Sr., Peter, Joel, James, Sr., Marshall, and James Hitt, Jr. (Culpeper County, Virginia Will Book K, 286 ff). In William Hitt's accounts for the estate were payments to Marshall Hitt "for services rendered", to Joseph Hitt, Jr. for "amount of warrant against estate", and to William Taylor "for crying the sale". A note in the account reads "deduct $25 each for three sisters willed to themselves". (Culpeper County, Virginia Will Book N, p. 377) There is much confusion over the children of Joseph, Sr. and Joseph, Jr. For this record the children of Joseph Hitt, Jr. are based upon his will and the Federal Census. The identity of the Hitts in attendance at the Joseph Hitt, Jr. estate sale are believed to be related as follows: Joseph Hitt was most likely the son of Joseph, Jr. and he is identified in this family record as Joseph III. Marshall and Peter Hitt are believed to be grandsons of Joseph, Jr. and the sons of Joseph Hitt III. (Joseph, Jr. had a brother named Peter but he died before Joseph, Jr.) James and William are also believed to have been the sons of Joseph, Jr. Joel was a nephew of Joseph, Jr.; the son of his brother John. The John, Sr. listed at the estate sale could have been Joseph, Jr.'s brother or his son, as both were still living at the time. James, Jr. remains unidentified. Joseph HITT Jr and his unknown wife had the following children: +2 i. Elizabeth "Betsey" HITT. +3 ii. Mary HITT. +4 iii. John HITT. +5 iv. Joseph HITT III. +6 v. Margaret "Peggy" HITT. +7 vi. William "Billy" HITT. 8 vii. James HITT[5] was born before 1790 in Culpeper County, Virginia.[6] The will of Joseph Hitt, Jr., identifies James as a son and heir (Will Book K, page 228, Culpeper County, Virginia, written 2 November 1825, proved 21 February 1826). James Hitt is listed in the 1830 Federal Census for Culpeper County, Virginia with 2 males 5-10 years, 1 male 40-50 years, 1 female under 5 years, 1 female 5-10 years, 1 female 30-40 years, and 1 slave. James Hitt is listed in the 1840 Federal Census for Culpeper County. This listing shows the household as: 1 male under 5 years, 1 male 5-10 years, 2 males 10-15 years, 1 male 15-20 years, 1 male 50-60 years, 2 females under 5 years, 1 female 5-10 years, 2 females 10-15 years, and 1 female 30-40 years old. It is believed that the family moved away from Culpeper County before the 1850 Federal Census was taken. SOURCES [1] B. C. Holtzclaw. To Sally Baughn, You are correct in all your statements. And, I thank you for the correction, which I will make sure is entered in my data base. Although it is no excuse, Baughan/Vaughan is not a primary research family for me, I did not take sufficient time to make sure of the data. I have no specific marriage data for Lystra and Margaret Hitt. My only sources are those I posted. Thanks again, Earl J. Earl, Thank you for your wonderful information regarding Catherine James Holtzclaw. I do have the Holtzclaw Genealogy by B.C. Holtzclaw, but it, of course, gives no infomation about her background. I am new to genealogy, but I just thought that Sarah and Catherine might possibly be sisters since the time frame was so close. It would be wonderful to tie her to Captain John James, but with your information it seems unlikely. She may remain a mystery unfortunately. Again thank you so much, Sharon Earl J. Hello, Earl, I have a question regarding the marriage information you forwarded pertaining to Lystra and his wife, Margaret Peggy HITT. You wrote: She was married to Lystra VAUGHAN/BAUGHAN (son of Mordecai VAUGHAN/BAUGHAN and Eve BAUMGARDNER) about 1800 in Virginia I can agree that they were probably married about 1800 as their first child was born in 1804. However, I have never been able to find a record of the marriage anywhere; and while I believe circumstantial evidence points to Fauquier or Culpeper Co, VA, its also possible that they were married in North Carolina or on the way there. Have you seen anything substantive on this date and place? Also, with regard to one of your sources, Baughns of Washington Court House, Ohio; Washington County Court House, Ohio, Id like to add some information. This was originally a chapter in a book written about the BAUGHN family from Virginia by Lorene F. BARKER in 1954. Mrs. BARKER received some information that was not entirely correct from a correspondent, and then confused some of the information in trying to transcribe it. It is (much like the Germanna research weve seen discussed here lately) a great pointer with clues about where to begin looking, but should not be accepted as written in stone. The other problem is that Washington Court House, Ohio, is the county seat of Fayette County, OH, and is in the center of the state. Washington County, OH, is in the southeast corner of the state, and anyone looking there for the BAUGHN family would be about 200 miles off. Id also like to mention that while I understand the usage of VAUGHAN/BAUGHAN in these messages, Mordecai was relatively consistent in using the B for spelling his name as were the five children who went to Ohio. There were at least two other BAUGHAN families in the area (we believe them to be related, but havent connected them yet); but there were also several VAUGHAN families -- of which one or two MAY have been related, and at least three were not related in any way we can find. Anyone researching this family should be very careful to check and double- check their evidence. (Not a bad idea anyhow!) Thanks for your efforts. We can always count on you to help. Sally BAUGHN CBAUGHN@aol.com
Carlisle and ALL, Carlisle, thanks for the vote of confidence. There a number of members of the Memorial Foundation that believe as I do. However, I did not mean my remarks to be the basis for a poll of Family Researchers. I sincerely hoped that it would encourage others to begin to research the controversy and to try to develop proof, that is if such proof actually exists. A couple of other remarks. As you may or may not know, both the Heite/Heide and Hitt names existed in England and Europe at the time that Peter Hitt immigrated to Germanna. The two names exist in modern times. If you research the IGI, you will also find that both names exist. If you research the Federal Censuses you will find that both surnames exist. The problem is that a relationship between the two names cannot be made. Over the last several years, I have tried to coorespond with Heite/Heide's in Europe with little or no success. I am still trying, but if previous results are any indication, my efforts will not result in any substantial information. However, I hope I am wrong. Earl J. Sharon, Heres some information concerning your question: 1. Capt. John JAMES[1,2,3] was born on 16 Mar 1709 in Stafford County, Virginia. He died bet 26 Nov 1777 - 25 May 1778 in Fauquier County, Virginia. John James was a Captain in the Virginia Militia in 1759 (Virginia Colonial Militia, 1651-1776; by William Armstrong Crozier, 1905, p. 96). His will can be found in Fauquier County, Virginia, Will Book 1, page 331, dated 6 November 1777 and was probated 25 May 1778. His will was as follows: In the name of God Amen. I, John James of the Parish of Hamelton and County of Fauquer, being sick and weak of body but of sound and perfect mind and memory thanks be to Almighty God, do make this my last will and testament in manner and for following. Viz. I bequeath my precious and immortal soul to Almighty God who gave it in full hope of pardon and redemption of all my sins and transgressions through the merits and mediations of my beloved Savior and Redeemer Jesus Christ. My body decently buried at the discretion of my executors hereafter named and as to such worldly estates wherewith God hath blest me, I dispose of the same as follows impremis. I give and bequeath unto my son George James all that parcel of land lying on the easternmost side of the spring branch, which came by his mother and as there is a small quantity of acres of the land which came by her on the other side, the south spring branch I give to my second son Thomas James in lieu thereof as much of my other land adjoining the land already bequeathed, which land I purchased of Griffin as will make that which came by his mother a tract of 500 acres in the whole, bordering on Cap Gibson, Cap. Kenner and Rodham Fuller's land to him and his heirs forever. But my will is that my son Thomas shall not protest this, I bequeath all after the decease of his mother. Then I give and bequeath to my son Benjamin James after his mother's decease the plantation I live on as much land adjoining as will make a tract of 500 acres, bound as follows: beginning at the corner of John Kerr's and my land, thence up the spring branch to the spring, thence from marked white oak, southeast to the wagon road which leads from the church to Brut Jones. The third 500 to be on both sides of the third road joining the land of John Crump, William Eustace and George Crump, also one negro boy named Tom which he has already in his possession, one feather bed and furniture, one cow and calf, 2 ewes and lambs. But in case my son Benjamin should die without lawful spouse the land I hereby bequeathed to go and belong to my son John James and his heirs forever. Then I give and bequeath to my son John James my land lying on the southwestmost side of the wagon road and follows path, containing by estimation 500 acres less the same more or less, one negro boy named Moses, one feather bed and furniture, one cow and calf, 2 ewes and lambs to him and his heirs forever. But my will and desire is that if my son John should die without lawful spouse the land hereby bequeathed shall be equally divided between my son Thomas James and my daughters, Sarah Hitt, Ann Fuller, Hannah Humes, Elizabeth Bradford, Mary Conway, Dinah Thompson, Susannah James and their heirs forever. Then I give my daughter Susannah James a horse, bridle and saddle, one feather bed and furniture, one cow and calf, 2 ewes and lambs to her and her heirs forever. Then I give to my grandson Benjamin James a horse, bridle and saddle, one bed and furniture and one cow and calf to him and his heirs forever. Then I bequeath to my loving and dear wife Dina James all the residue of my estate, both real and personal during her life and after her decease all the lands not already bequeathed to my sons, I leave to be equally divided among my daughters, Sarah Hitt, Ann Fuller, Hanna Humes, Elizabeth Bradford, Mary Conway, Dinah Thompson, Susanna James and their heirs forever. And such other real or personal estate as she shall have at her decease to be equally divided among all my children, sons and daughters and their heirs forever. But my will and intent is that the negro boy named Tom, now in possession of my son Benjamin James, shall bare him so much of his proportion in the division to be made at his mother's decease as the said negro shall be valued at. Then my will is that such of my slaves as I have therefore built for my children and any increase after the decease of my wife shall be let in and divided with the rest of my estate among all my children and if any of my children should die before such division takes place and leaves lawful spouse, that the spouse be entitled to the same share. Lastly, I hereby constitute and appoint my dear and loving wife, Dinah James, and my sons Thomas James and John James, executrix and executors of this my last will and testament, hereby revoking all former wills by me made and declaring this to be my last will and testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal. This, the sixth day of November 1777. John James Witnesses: Wm. Grant John Kerr J. Markham Marmaduke Brown On 13 February 1802, Peter Hitt, Peter Conway, and John Bradford, heirs of John James, decd., are ordered to pay the other heirs, namely, James Thompson, Isaac Eustace, Rodham Tulloss, and Charles Humes. This record proves that John James' daughter, Susannah who was unmarried at the time his will was written, had married Isaac Eustace by 1802. (Fauquier County, Virginia Will Book 3, p. 369). John was married to Dinah ALLEN (daughter of William ALLEN and Margaret ????) before 1738 in St. Pauls Parrish, Stafford County, Virginia. Dinah ALLEN[4,5] was born about 1716 in Stafford County, Virginia. She died on 16 May 1800 in Fauquier County, Virginia. Capt. John JAMES and Dinah ALLEN had the following children: +2 i. Sarah JAMES. +3 ii. George JAMES. +4 iii. Hannah JAMES. 5 iv. Thomas JAMES[6]. Thomas is identifed as the second son in the will of his father, John James. +6 v. Mary JAMES. +7 vi. Catherine JAMES[1,2] Peter Hitt, Jr. entered in his book of accounts: "Paid Sister Holtzclaw 11 Dollars I received of Brother Porter". This is believed to be Catherine (James) Holtzclaw, mother of Archibald and the widow of Joseph Holtzclaw. Many have questioned that Catherine is the daughter of Capt. John James because she does not appear in his will, however, the account book entry seems to indicate that Catherine was a sister of Peter Hitt's wife and a daughter of Capt. John James. As used here, "Sister" most likely refers to a member of the Carter's Run Baptist Church; an old custom. Caty Holtzclaw was appointed administrix of Joseph Holtzclaw, decd., at the March Court in 1786 (Fauquier County, Virginia Minute Book 1784-1786, p. 331), and at the October Court, she was appointed guardian of the orphans; Archibald, Betsey, Stephen, Eli, Aggy, Faranky, and Sally Holtzcalw. (Fauquier County, Virginia Minuite Book 1786-1788, p. 106). It is believed that there was one other child, Cathy, that was probably born after Joseph's death. Joseph HOLTZCLAW[3,4,5] (son of Johannes "John" HOLTZCLAW and Catherine RUSSELL) was born about 1735. He died about 1786 in Fauquier County, Virginia. Joseph served in the French and Indian War in 1761 in Capt. William Edmunds' Company. His wife, Caty Holtzcalw, was paid for supplies furnished the troops in the Revolutionary War (Public Service Claims, Fauquier County, Virginia; In the State Archives, Richmond, Virginia). Joseph and his wife Catherine were members of Carter's Run Baptist Church in Fauquier County, Virginia. Joseph was a delegate to the first general association of the Particular Baptists in Virginia in 1771. Hello, I am looking for info concerning Catherine Allensworth, b. 1810, d. 1888, wife of Aldridge Hitt. I was wondering if anyone could tell me the relationship between Asa Hume, who was appointed guardian of Aldridge Hitt on 28 Dec 1819 in Fauquier Co., VA; Charles Hume, who married Aldridge Hitt's great-aunt Hannah James; and George Hume, lessee in the Fairfax Proprietary 1786-1792 and next-door neighbor of Philip Allensworth near Front Royal in Frederick (now Warren) Co., VA. BTW: Philip Allensworth was probably not the father of Catherine Allensworth. My best guess is that her father was John Allensworth who is buried in Gaines Cem., Tazewell Co., Ill, and may be the same John Allensworth who purchased 41 1/2 acres on Happy Creek near Chester's Gap in Frederick (now Warren) Co., VA in 1794. Mike, You have reached Sue Pearson, not Sue Porter! Don't know Sue Porter. But I am a Descendent of the Hitt Family. Sharon, The will of John James, dated 6 Nov. 1777, Fauquier Co., VA, lists his sons Thomas, Benjamin, and John, and his daughters Sarah Hitt, Ann Tullos, Hannah Humes, Elizabeth Bradford, Mary Conway, Dinah Thompson, and Susannah James. It does not mention a daughter Catherine. R. Bischer b4acres@tucker-usa.com
Ben, Thanks. According to Yvonne's Daisy site, that Joseph Hitt, b. 1717, m. Mary Cuntze, had no children. In my data I have these children for Joseph and Mary: John Hitt, Joseph Hitt, Jr (the subject of the Hit-List of late), Elisha Hitt, Charles Hitt. Lazarus Hitt. < BTW, Yvonne -- your pedigree graphics don't show. > I just visited Earl's page and found Peter. So I guess I've got my answer --- Thanks..... -----Original Message----- From: Ben L Grove <BenLGrove@compuserve.com> To: HITT-L@rootsweb.com <HITT-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Sunday, November 08, 1998 6:24 AM Subject: Re: DAVID HITT >Hi Michsel, Ben here again, Yes , this is the Peter Hiitt, son of Joseph >born 1717. Sue Porter, I received your email, but my reply to you keeps getting bounced by AOL. Is this < Suport@aol.com > your correct email address? ... Mike Allen
Hi Michsel, Ben here again, Yes , this is the Peter Hiitt, son of Joseph born 1717. If you will go to www.rootsweb.com/~daisy/hitt.htm It will give you the complete Peter Hitt geneology plus a lot of other good info. Glad to be of help. Ben Grove
Betty, I'm another one of them there Hitt's. I've only recently begun on the trek to find the relatives that I have. My family is hard to trace, but my father said that we're from the "Washington County, GA" group of Hitt's. My grandfather (d. 1977) was from Lawson (?) Hitt, my father only vaguely remembers his grandfather, who still was residing in Wa. Co GA during the depression years, dying sometime in the early 30/40 timeframe. If you have any links, I'd be greatly appreciative. Thanks, Stephen Hitt
