Governor Alexander Spotswood in American history, much was known of his involvement with the establishment of the Germanna Settlement, but little of the German Settlers who were brought to this area with the First Colony of 1714, the Second Colony of 1717, and later Colonies. During the past years, the Germanna Foundation has conducted continuing research regarding these families and their descendants. Through these efforts, significant historic data has been obtained regarding these families who bravely traveled to a new country leaving many of their friends and family behind. Their courage and determination to find a better life for themselves can be shown through the large number of prominent families who have grown from this brave struggle. http://www.germanna.org/publications.html Germanna Record No. 14...................................................... $12.00 The Holtzclaw Genealogy 1540-1935. 3. I show that Wiley HITT, s/o Daniel HITT, was born abt 1859 in Mississippi. At this point I loose track of him. "If" Wiley was Witty HITT it would try George Riley to the Germanna Hitts. Any ideas? Debbe Hitt

    3. In 1900, George Riley HITT was in Anderson Co., SC (incorrect data but right family). In 1910 and 1920 he was in Greenville Co., SC. George Riley HITT was my great-grandfather. Seven months after the census was taken, my grandmother, the first and only surviving child of George Riley HITT and his first wife, Margaret Ann YOUNG, was born in Toccoa, GA. This family followed the mills before finally settling down in Woodside, Greenville, Greenville Co., SC. There was a Witty HITT, who I believe to be an uncle of George Riley HITT, who had moved to Toccoa between 1870/60 and settled there. Witty HITT was a stonemason and moved to Toccoa to help build a mill and settled there. Some people think that Witty HITT was Wiley HITT who married Dicey UNKNOWN and raised a family in Toccoa. I will have to pull my HITT files out of temporary storage to get the story. Also, George Riley HITT's youngest child, by his second wife, Alma FEW, is still alive and sharp as a tack. I plan to meet with her in Greenville on December 12th to get all the information that I can on George Riley HITT. Is there someone on this list with an interest in George Riley HITT besides me? If so, what is the connection. 2. James S. Rogers
    3. After comments from Earl Hitt I have reviewed census data for 1820, 1830 and 1840 for James Hitt in Pickens County SC. The 1830 census shows 14 children--6 boys and 8 girls in the family. The census lists 2 males under 5, 1 male 5 to 10, 1male 10-15, 1male 15-20, 1male 20-30, and 1 male 40-50 (James) and 1 female under 5, 2 females 5-10, 2 females 10-15, 2 females 15-20, 1 female 20-30, and 1 female 40-50 (Mary?). According to my other information the children with their age in 1830 were. 23 James, Jr. b. October 13, 1807 21 Sarah Hitt b. January 18, 1809 20 Susannah Hitt b. December 25, 1810 18 Thomas Hitt b. September 10 , 1812 16 Huldah Hitt b. June 1, 1814 14 Jane Hitt b. April 26, 1816 12 Leonard Hitt b. April 19, 1818 10 Nancy Hitt b. April 28, 1820 8 Rebecca Hitt b. March 31, 1822 7 Elender Hitt b. July 2, 1823 5 George Hitt, b. September 14, 1825 3 Benjamin C. Hitt b. April 15, 1827 2 Martha Hitt b. September 11 1828 <1David Hitt b. September 24, 1830 These ages fit almost exactly the the 1830 census data. This is also true for the 1820 census data for James in Pickens county SC when the youngest child would have been Nancy. By the 1840 Census only the 3 younger males are still at home are still at home and the 5 of the girls. Since Hulda(Mahulda), Jane, Nancy, Rebecca, and Martha appear in a family unit in Cherokee County Ga in 1850, I must assume that they are the girls in the 1840 census. Sarah, Susannah, and Elender are either married, living in another family, or deceased by 1840. The ages given for James and his wife (Mary) also agree with the birth dates of 1784 for James and 1789 for Mary. At this time I have found no trace of James after the 1840 census. Mary appears in the 1870 census of Cherokee county GA as head of house with daughters Nancy and Martha. Again the ages fit with previous data. None of this says anything about the father of James although I still suspect that he is the son Peter b. 1763. As I continue my search I appreciate any help or comments. Sam Rogers Greatgrandson of B. C. Hitt.

    3. Thanks to Rhita Reynolds I have a much better idea of where I fit into the Hitt saga -- a better idea, but still incomplete. I am including the descendents of James Allen Hitt's son George R. Hitt (mother was Elender Duncan. As for Rhita, this Hitt line is the most intractable I have, so any information that could help her tracing James Allen Hitt's line back would be of great help to me as well. Also, if anyone has a clue about the wife of this George R. Hitt (and be careful for there are many with that name) please tell me cause I am desparate. I think her name was Alace A. 3. Hello: This is my first post to the HITT list but I have seen some things in the past few days that makes me pause and share my information on my HITT line in SC. Here goes: I Rhita Louise WOOD - me II Richard Perry WOOD and Viola Letha SUTTLES III Edwin Urias WOOD and Ethel Mae HITT (Ethel born 22 Feb 1891 - Toccoa, Stephens Co., GA died 1 Nov 1976 - Greenville Co., SC) IV George Riley HITT and Margaret Ann YOUNG (G. HITT Vesta Buena HITT Nellie Gertrude HITT VI James (Allen) HITT and (1) Sarah (GUNTER or McDANIEL) (b. abt 1824 in SC/death unknown/served in the 16th SCVI) James' son, Tyra Allen HITT's death certificate gives his father's name as James Allen HITT. Children: William F. HITT James (Madison or Monroe) HITT James (Allen) HITT and (2) Elender DUNCAN Elender (1824 - 1901) Children: John Thomas HITT Children: John Allen Feddie (not Freddie!) Betty Zanie Hanie Tyra William Arthur George Kannon Ellie Mary Florence George R. HITT Frank HITT Tyra Allen HITT (never married) Earl - this is where Elender DUNCAN comes in! I have not been able to get past James (Allen) HITT. He is thought to be the son of William HITT and his wife Haney UNKNOWN who lived in Greenville Co., SC. They had a son, George Robert HITT, who moved to Toccoa, Stephens Co., GA and operated a mill there. In fact, my great-grandfather had gone to work there as a stonemason in 1901 when my grandmother was born. It is believed that this William HITT (born abt 1782 in SC) was the son of Peter HITT of Greenville Co., SC. William and Haney's other children included a Margaret and a Wiley. They also had a grandaughter living with them in the 1850 census named Julia HITT. As you can see, there are a lot of reoccuring family names: James, Allen, Tyra, George, William, Haney... Sigh! Well this is my problem family line. If anyone is familiar with it, I would love to hear from you. I have a lot of SC HITT Family research - just not much by way of connection. Thanks a lot. 1. James Hitt in Pickens County
    2. Rodenburg, Eric
    3. Earl and James, Ok, here is the deal. One James Hitt (James A.) born about 1823 in Old 96 (now Pickens County) SC married Elendor Duncan (Daughter of Nathaniel Duncan and Unknown Barnett) born about 1830 (could have been as early as 1823)also in Old 96 District. They had at least two children Frances and my ancestor George R. Hitt born January 1853 in Pickens County (died in Richmond VA c 1910). Nathaniel Duncan is recorded as having some dealings in common with and living near a J.T. Hitt which I take as James A. Hitt's father. I suggest that J.T. Hitt was not the James Hitt in the 1840 Pickens County but either an older James Hitt Sr. son who was not listed in that household or more likely a brother to James Hitt Sr. I suggest J.T. Hitt was John Hitt, son of the Peter Hitt who was born in 1863 and died in Greenville Co., SC. in 1836. The fact that James Sr. named his daughter born in 1823 "Elendor" and that a different James A. Hitt married an Elendor Duncan about 1850 is just a coincidence. I seem to run into a lot of coincidence as I pursue this obsession sorry, I meant hobby. So, what do you think? Does any one know about John's descendents? Did James Sr. have any undocumented sons? I think we might be on the verge of a connection here. > Subject: Re: James Hitt > Date: Wed, 11 Nov 1998 14:29:45 -0600 > From: "Earl J. 3. James S. Rogers, Here are my comments. I think we still have a mystery. Here's why ! If you look at the Federal censuses for 1830 and 1840 for both VA and SC, there are major problems. For example, your SC census for 1840, gives only 3 male sons, and our listing for James gives six sons all born before 1840. Likewise for the female listing: the SC 1840 census gives 5 females, whereas our family listings give 7 females all born before 1840. A similar analysis can be made for Virginia. This is one of the reasons that I have not linked the James Hitt family, since I don't know and can even make a good guess as to who his father and mother are. One other problem, I show that James son of Peter and (?????) Hitt married Elender Duncan, and the fact that they had a daughter that they named "Elender" also raises questions. Was James married twice, or are we talking about two different families. If you have the answer, I for one, would welcome the information. Earl J. Hitt -----Original Message----- From: James S. 1. John Kennon Hitt
    2. Hello! I'm new to this list and was wondering if anyone on the list has the following individuals: JOHN KENNON HITT m GRACE JENKINS no dates their daughter EMILY JANE HITT m PENDLETON PULLEN in Nov 1817. I have no other dates, just the names and relationships and the lineages of Pendleton & Emily's chidren and families. I do know that Pendleton and Emily lived in the Blue Ridge area, possibly in what is now the Culpepper or Rhappahanock areas. Their children's families lived in and around Washington, Va., Luray and Sperryville, Va. Thank You, Susan Frazier
