    1. Hitts in 1850 Culpeper Census
    2. Earl J. Hitt
    3. Judith listed some Hitt families omitted from an index to the 1850 census. She is correct, one should not rely on an index but should refer to the Census itself. For those interested here is the relationship of the Hitts omitted and listed by Judith Allison Walters: Joseph Hitt, Jr., father of: Joseph (74) Hitt & Rhoda (Marshall) Hitt Mumford (39) Hitt & Elizabeth Hitt Peter (52) & Emily Hitt Marshall (48) Mathias & Mary Ann (Miller) Hitt John & Frances (Holtzclaw) Hitt Joel (52) & Nancy Hitt William (63) "Billy" & Mary Hitt Charles (29) & Elizabeth Hitt Joseph Hitt, Jr. was the s/o Joseph & Mary (Coons) Hitt and the grandson of Peter Hitt the 1714 immigrant. I cannot link a "Humphrey" Hitt. The Joseph Hitt - Marshall Hitt line is my direct family line. For those of you that are interested, you will find complete details at my web site (which also includes details on almost all of the above families): http://www.geocities.com/heartland/prairie/3596/ Of course there were a number of other Hitts in the Culpeper area in 1850, and many who stayed and many who still live in the area. I hope the above is of some assistance. Earl J. Hitt

    1. Re: LAURA BRADFORD
    2. Earl J. Hitt
    3. The John Hitt that married Frances "Franky" Holtzclaw did not have a son named William. John and Frances's children are identified in John's will as: my four sons Joel, Joab, James and John. William s/o John Hitt and Frances "Franky" Banks (The Cape Girardeau, MO Hitts) has been mistakenly said to have married a Bradford, however, he actually married Leah Peddy and they had a son they named William Bradford Dunston Hitt. This William was named after his maternal grandmother who was named Rachel Bradford. I have been unable to find a source for a marriage between a William Hitt and a Laura Bradford. I hope this above will help to remove some of the confusion. Earl J. 2. Hi Pat, Who is your husbands ancestor from Peter HITT? Mine is also Peter HITT born 1690 Germany and Elizabeth OTTERBACH born 1695 Germany, their daughter Mary HITT born 1717 Fauquier Co., VA was my 5th great grandmother. She married Jacob RECTOR born 1726 VA. If you can give any dates and your husbands line from Peter on down, maybe I can help too. Sue

    3. Judith...My name is Pat Warner. I'm married to a Peter Hitt descendant and I'm trying to trace his relatives. I'm new to this game and new to internet travel. I too would love to have that list but I would love some information on how to get this kind of information. Where do I start looking. I've been on a never ending circle and until I received your message last night, felt completely defeated. Can you help me learn. Thanks so much. Pat

    3. Hi cousins, A couple of days ago I was going to copy all the Hitts in Culpeper Co., VA using the 1850 index as a guide. Amazingly there were none listed for that county. I thought it strange as they were there in 1860 and in 1840, so I took a look at the census itself. Guess what? Lots of Hitts. So if you're depending on that printed index, don't. I copied quite a few but didn't have time to finish, but will be glad to share what I have so far, if you're looking for anyone there at that time. Judith
