Gordon, "The Genealogy of the Kemper Family" by Willis Miller Kemper and Harry Linn Wright, 1899, states that William was married twice -- both of his wives were named Sarah Hitt -- causing much confusion for us, but imagine the confusion for him and his children <g> It does not give dates for either Sarah. So, if you have documentation on this, I'd be greatful to know about it. I am looking for information of the children of William KEMPER b. abt 1765 and Sarah "Sally" HITT b. 17 June 1798. I have seen several reports that all differ. Some show William with another wife. The number of children run from eight to fifteen with one child, Alexander, being born when Sally was one year old. I don't know why people don't proof their work for logic. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated. Gordon Lane Sewanee
Debbie That is what I have too. I also have William Hitt married Hannah May. Second spouses and misspellings can cause these things. I don't have any other data. Thiw comes from "Benjamin ... and Nancy Hitt" by Beatrice Myers. Philip Hudson
Al, You are correct, Arthur Gladstone and Susannah Hitt had several children and you may be correct in that I may not be the best person to ask. I have not reviewed "Daisey's GEDCOM Database", therefore I cannot comment on the data that is given there. However, the following is from my data base: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --- 1. Arthur GLADSTONE[1] and his family were living in Fauquier County when the 1810 Federal Census was taken. He was married to Susannah "Susan" HITT (daughter of John HITT and Mary ????) on 20 Dec 1786 in Fauquier County, Virginia.[2] Marriage Bond was dated 18 December 1786. Joseph Russell was Bondsman for the marriage of Arthur and Susanna.[3] Susannah "Susan" HITT was born about 1766. Arthur GLADSTONE and Susannah "Susan" HITT had the following children: +2 i. Presley GLADSTONE b. ?; m. Fanny Allison on 23 Dec 1817 in Fauquier County, Virginia. +3 ii. Hannah Hitt GLADSTONE. +4 iii. Susannah GLADSTONE. +5 iv. Patsey GLADSTONE. +6 v. Janelle, William Hitt who married Betsey Bailey was the son of John & Sarah (??) Hitt, the grandson of John, Jr. & Sarah (Pace) Hitt, and the great grandson of Peter Hitt, 1714 immigrant to Virginia. Here is the information on John, Jr. & Sarah (??) Hitt: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- -- 1. John HITT Jr.[1] was born before 1743 in Prince William County, Virginia. He died about 1805 in Fauquier County, Virginia. In 1761, John Hitt, Jr. was a member of the Fauquier County Militia in the French and Indian War and a muster list shows him present for muster in 1761.(Virginia Magazine of History & Biography, Vol 7, pp 305-6). Therefore, in 1761 he was at least 18 years of age. John, Jr. was listed in the 1770 and 1777 Rent Rolls for Fauquier County, Virginia, with 53 acres of land. The 1783 through 1786 land taxes list John as owning 50 acres of land, and the 1788 through 1793 land taxes list him with 144 acres of land. In 1792 he is listed with 37.5 acres of land which he purchased from Russell. John Hitt, Jr. appears in the 1800 Tax List for Culpeper County, Virginia, District of David Brown. (Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, Vol 62, No. 1, January 1954, p. 124). From 1786 to 1810, the Fauquier County tithables list at various times the following sons of John: Elijah, James, Jesse, John, Nathan, and William (for details see Germanna Record No. 1, p.17-18). On 9 December 1802, William Briggs and Sarah his wife of Stafford County deeded to John Hitt of Fauquier County, for 150.00 lbs, 169 acres of land granted to Briggs by Arthur Morison and wife January 31, 1798. The land was S/S of Hedgeman River and adjacent to David Briggs. Witnesses: Elizabeth Hitt, Jesse Hitt, and Elisha Curtis. (Culpeper County, Virginia Deed Book X, p. 226). Elizabeth and Jesse Hitt were the children of John Hitt and Elisha Curtis was John's son-in-law who married daughter Sarah Hitt. One reference gives John's age as 64 when he died. It is believed that John died without a will, however, his estate was appraised on May 27, 1805. The account of the sales of his estate lists the following purchasers: John Kemper, Elijah Hitt, Nathan Hitt, Charles Scott, Jesse Hitt, John Casey, William Hitt, John Hitt, Elisha Curtis, Elizabeth Hitt, Susannah Hitt, William Bell, Martin Hitt, Francis James, and Isaac Campbell. (Fauquier County, Virginia Will Book 4, p. 101, 103). Elijah, Nathan, Jesse, William, John, Elizabeth, and Susannah Hitt were his children, and Elisha Curtis was his son-in-law, husband of his daughter Sarah. After John's death, his three eldest sons were each named as guardians of one of his youngest children: John guardian of Susannah, Nathan guardian of Stephen, and Elijah guardian of Elizabeth. (Fauquier County Virginia Guardian Bonds 1759-1871; Gott.) Sarah ???? died about 1810, however, Sarah survived her husband and can last be found in the tithables in 1809. John HITT Jr. and Sarah ???? had the following children: 2 i. Elijah HITT[2,3] was born about 1765. He died before 24 Mar 1829 in Fauquier County, Virginia. Elijah was an independent tithable in 1786 which indicates his birth about 1765. Elijah appears with his brother, Nathan, in the 1800 Tax List for Culpeper County, Virginia, District of David Brown. He is listed as owning one horse (Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, Vol 62, No. 1, January 1954, p. 124). Elijah never married. He lived with his brother Nathan Hitt in Warrentown, Virginia. His will was dated 31 January 1829 and was probated 24 March 1829. 3 ii. Nathan HITT[2,4] was born about 1767 in Fauquier County, Virginia. Nathan listed as a tithable in his father's family in 1788 which indicates his birth about 1767. Nathan appears with his brother, Elijah, in the 1800 Tax List for Culpeper County, Virginia, District of David Brown. He is listed as owning one horse (Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, Vol 62, No. 1, January 1954, p. 124). Nathan never married. He lived with his brother Elijah at Warrentown, Virginia. He was still living in Fauquier County in 1824. He left his money to his nephews, Dudley David, John R., and Steptoe; all children of John Hitt. +4 iii. John HITT. +5 iv. Sarah HITT. +6 v. Jesse HITT. +7 vi. James William HITT Sr.. +8 vii. William HITT. +9 viii. Stephen HITT. +10 ix. Susannah (Rosanna) HITT. +11 x. Elizabeth HITT. SOURCES [1] Dr. Benjamin C. Hi, In reply to a number of inquiries I have received concerning William Hitt, William Hitt was the son of John and Sarah Hitt; that John Hitt was the son of John Hitt and Sarah Day Pace; and that John Hitt was the son of Peter and Elizabeth Hitt. William Hitt was b. in 1784 in Fauquier Co., Virginia, and died in 1845 in Martin Co., Indiana. He and Elizabeth Bailey ( who d. in 1824) had the following children: 1. Charles Hitt, b. June 22, 1812, Warrenton, VA. m. Mary Force, March 11, 1846; d. Mar. 3, 1869, Clay Co., Ill. a. Adrian Hitt, b. Jan. 2, 1851; b. Caleb Hitt, b. Dec. 4, 1848; m. Helen Deam; c. Laura Mariah Hitt, b. Dec. 3, 1854; m. Albert Smith; d. Alice Rosella Hitt; e. Mary Enis Hitt; f. Anna Florence Hitt, b. ca. 1863 (my great-gr.m.) 2. William Hitt, b. c. 1816/7, m. Hannah Ward July 31, 1846; a. Eliza Ann Hitt, b. ca. 1847/8; 3. John Hitt, b.c.1817/8; m. Jane Snyder June 20, 1850; 4. Mary Hitt m. Thomas Manning; 5. Sarah Hitt m. Mason Sherman; 6. Elizabeth Hitt m. Sol Way The marriages among William and Elizabeth Hitt's children all took place in Martin Co., Indiana. Charles Hitt's widow and children were living in Flora, Clay Co., Illinois, at the time of the 1870 census. Thanks for your help and interest in this particular line of descent. Lance Bretsnyder

Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Good morning, all, Are you as tired of getting long messages from people who are trying to sell you something while you are wanting to use the internet for other purposes? Well, I am. Now, someone is wanting to sell addresses to others so they can do the same thing to us. Here is part of their message (you would hurt me if I pasted it all. It is a looooonng one" "We took a total of over 190 million email addresses from many of the touted CD's that are out there (bought them all - some were $300+)! We added the millions we had in storage to those. When we combined them all, we had in excess of 300+ million addresses in one huge file. . . . " "You use these addresses, you will experience increased response, increased sales, and a host of other positives that far exceeds any hoped for results when using the competitor's inferior products. . . . " They even furnish testimonials: ""This list is worth it's weight in gold!! I sent out 100,000 emails for my product and received over 55 orders! . . ." I turned these people in for spamming. Here is what is happening. "They relayed it (raped) though some poor open mail server in Japan. My server has filed a complaint with the administrator of the server and ask them to PLEASE close their open server." This is one way to give them the hassle they are giving to the internet users: They seem to have a 800 number that THEY have to pay for each call. You might want to stop by a pay phone ( everyone your see ) and let them know how you feel about unsolicited email :) Last I checked it was like 18 cents each call. :) The other thing you might do is give their phone number to all of the people you know - ask them to call - and pass the number on to others to do the same thing. They might get a few calls if it were posted on bulletin boards in public places with a note about what they are doing and why the response is thus. I am sick and tired of spammers taking my time and space in my mailbox. I will appreciate every call that each of you make to these people and every call that you ask others to make. Maybe they will go broke before the sell too many CD's with my address (and maybe yours) on it. Hi, William Hitt married Elizabeth Bailey, the daughter of Stephen Bailey and Susannah Lunceford, in Fauquier County, Virginia, in 1810. In 1813 they moved to Martin County, Indiana. Are there any other descendants of that couple out there? Thanks, Lance Bretsnyder
To All, At this time of the year, I hate to bring bad news, but I know that many of you have read and make reference to the two Hitt family books co-authored by Beatrice Myers and Vada Phillips; "Benjamin Hitt & Nancy Curnal, their Antecedents and Descendants" and "Hitt Highlights" a suplement to the forgoing book. Those of us who knew Beatrice as a Hitt Family Researcher and friend are truly sadened to hear that she has passed away. I have just received the following from Beatrice Myers daughter, and I quote: Beatrice Myers died of cancer on May 11, 1998. She was 81 at the time of her death and had fought cancer for over a year. Her first surgery was April of 1997. Doctors concluded that the cancer started in her ovaries and spread to the colon. Chemo treatments put her in remission and she seemed to be getting back on her feet. She started back teaching Sunday School and WMU. Then the cancer came back swiftly and she was only hospitalized for three weeks. She was a trooper to the end and made friends with aides and nurses. During her hospital stay her sister-in-law, Ruby, stayed with her on most weekdays for what Beatrice called pajama parties. I stayed on the weekends. Ruby's presence was very comforting to her and to us. We knew Ruby's experience as a nurse made her the ideal companion. Both of her grandchildren and her great grandson were able to visit her in the hospital. She knew that her second great grandson, Caleb Alexander, was to be born in June and she was determined to be here but that just wasn't to be. Her funeral was in Orange at Old First Baptist Church and we took her back to Newton, Mississippi for burial. Archie (Beatrice's Husband) is suffering from Alzheimer's disease. We hired sitters and tried to keep him at home but that didn't work out. He is in Gulf Health Care Facility in Port Arthur. He knows us and his brothers and sisters and can tell you the date of his marriage but has difficulty remembering anything that hasw happened recently. For example, he can't remember his great granchildren or that Beatrice died. Archie reaads letters and cards over and over and he does remember friends and relatives so cards and letters are welcome. Mail can be sent to us or to Gulf Health Care Center/ 6600 9th Avenue/ Port Arthur, TX 77642. Have a joyous holiday season Signed/ Lily & Larry Myers End Quote. Earl J. Hitt
