    3. OK, good news: our mailing list is ready to roll. Briefly (very), you can subscribe to th list in mail mode by sending a message to KEMPERS-L-request@rootsweb.com that contains the word subscribe and nothing else. If you prefer digest mode, they should send the command instead to KEMPERS-D-request@rootsweb.com. To unsubscribe, you should send the command "unsubscribe" to KEMPERS-L-request@rootsweb.com (if in mail mode) or KEMPERS-D-request@rootsweb.com (if in digest mode.) To switch from one mode to the other, you should unsubscribe from one and then subscribe to the other. To post to both KEMPERS-L and KEMPERS-D, messages should be sent to KEMPERS-L@rootsweb.com. Messages sent there will appear both places. Please pass this message on to other list you belong to. 3. I have looked over the geneology posted on the Internet, and see that other than date of birth, nothing seems to be known about Thomas E. Hitt [Peter, John, Peter, Alexander, Joseph]. I would like to submit some information about him. Thomas E. married E.Mille Ballard. Thomas was born in Illinois, and E. Mille Ballard was born in Ohio. They had three children born in Nebraska: Roy Wesley- June 22, 1884 Lois- Aug 23, 1887 Ray, who died at the age of 5. Lois Married Oscar Pitts and had a daughter, Maxine, who is married to Owen Flickinger, and they reside in California. Roy married Bertha McClellan in California. He was a minor league baseball pitcher with the Vernon Tigers, and played one year for the Cincinatti Reds. (His one year record is posted on the Internet). Their children: Eugene Roy- Nov. 27, 1905. He married Helen. Their children: Richard E. Hitt, July 27th, 1933- living now in Santa Ana, CA David N. Hitt, Oct. 25th, 1939 Thomas Haskell Hitt- June 17th, 1907. He married Elizabeth. Charles- March 27, 1932. He married Marie. Hanora T. Hitt- Aug. 2nd, 1934 Owen Westland Hitt- Nov. 20, 1909. He married Lillian Naomi (Lee) Parker. Donald Owen- Aug. 20, 1931- Married Barbara Dixie Lee- July 16th, 1933 Sharon Lucille- Oct. 7, 1940 Jackie Lynn- April 1, 1948 [that's me!] I want to thank you for the energy and interest you have put into the family tree. It has answered a lot of questions for us, as my cousin Dick in California has been researching the family history on the Hitt side and coming up short. (he doesn't do computers!) We greatly appreciate finding US on the web! Jackie L. (Hitt)Vick Stevensville, MT Thomas Haskell Owen Westland

    1. James Allen Hitt breakthrough?
    2. Rodenburg, Eric
    3. While reviewing the Hitt archives on Rootsweb for any leads, I stumbled across a throwaway line by Rhita Reynolds that she had been unable to trace the ancestry of James Allen Hitt but that "He is thought to be the son of William Hitt and his wife Haney UNKNOWN who lived in Greenville County , SC....It is believed that this William Hitt....is the son of Peter Hitt of Greenville, Co., SC. On the off-chance that there might be something there, I looked up William Hitt in the 1860 census (p. 500, Greenville District) There he was age 75, farmer -- but no connection to James Allen Hitt apparent. But wait, also on page 500 just a few houses away was a James A. Hill--farmer -- age 38 (suspiciously similar to what James A Hitt's age would have been, with wife Elender age 31 (the same as Elender Hitt's everywhere except her tombstone) with children James M. age 8, George age 5, and John T.age 3, also suspiciously like James Allen Hitt's children James Madison (or Monroe) Hitt (mother Sarah), George R. Hitt, and John Thomas Hitt (the latter two are born of Elender Duncan Hitt). So, I propose that James A. Hill was actually James A. Hitt (the enumerator just didn't cross his tees) and that he was living very near his ancient father William Hitt and helping him farm. Supporting this proposition is the fact that no James A. Hill can be found in the SC census indices of 1850 or 1870. If this proposition is true then William was born abt 1785 presumably the son of the Peter Hitt that migrated to Greenville SC from Halifax VA. Any comments? It certainly helps me out. Regards, Eric

    2. Judith, I am assuming he was born in New York. All my mother ever said was that he grew up in or around Andes, NY. He died when she was 10, and her mother died when she was 15 or 16. So she really doesn't recall too much. Thanks for answering--at least I know the list is active. Vickie

The 1880 census soundex of that state would show the details of his parents' family as of that year, which could tell you a lot. So what state would you suggest? Judith

    1. Geographic areas?
    2. It occurs to me when I read postings on the list that they would be easier to discern if the geographic area the persons they are writing about was mentioned such as John Hitt, Kentucky, 1834, etc., what do you think? Sure would make it easier to determine what John Hitt they were talking about. Just a suggestion. Don Lee

    3. Your George Hitt is George William Hitt s/o Thomas Gordon Hitt; grd/s of Henry Hitt; gr-grd/s of Jared Hitt; gr-gr-grd/s of Henry Hitt; etc.; who was born 3 Jan. 1870 Shavertown, Andes, Delaware Co., NY. This is another of the five Hitt families in America that are not related in America; and is not of the family of Peter Hitt 1714 immigrant to Germanna in the Virginia Colony. Complete data on the family and ancestors of George William Hitt can be found in the book: "Descendants of Henry Hitt of Woodbury, Connecticut" by Maurice R. Hitt, Jr., C.G. Maurice lives in Dunnellan, FL and at one time could be found on the internet by addressing him: mhitt@mfi.net When I last talked to Maurice, he still had copies of the above book. Earl J.
