In the last few months I have been trying to match up all Hitts fro Otterton using Aylesbeare Deanery CD and census returns. I was about to hire a researcher again to go further back trying to find Thomas' christening 1761. What years prior to CD have you researched for Otterton, was there any Hitts prior to 1761. Have you ever tried to find his christening? I do not paying for researcher but it would be a waste if I know you have already tried to locate Thomas. If you would like me to send you my Hitt research my email address is sarah.knight23@btinternet.com Kind regards Sarah Knight Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: ChristineHitt51 Surnames: Hitt, Edds, Sims, May, Nicholson, Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.hitt/630.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Sarah, I married into the Hitt family back in August 1971. Sadly my husband passed away in October 2008 but I do have a fair amount of info myself as my father-in-law, (Arthur) Martin Hitt, had done some research before he died in 1991. My tree is best on Genes Reunited. Below is listed the main root back, but I do have many siblings of the generations also listed on Genes. I do aim to get them all on to Ancestry ASAP.... here goes..... Thomas Hitt 1761-1817 b Otterton m Sarah May on 07/01/1782 Henry Hitt 11/05/1785 ( born /bap) Otterton m Ann Brown 15/07/1805 Shoemaker/shopkeeper Thomas Hitt c 1818 Otterton m Harriet Sims c 1817 marriage 16/091839 Thomas Hitt b/bap 29/12/1858 Otterton. died 4/11/1926 Budleigh Salterton m Elizabeth J Edds 1856-1940 Arthur W Hitt b 12/09/1889 25 Chapel St, Budleigh Salterton d 19/12/1968 m Mary Ann Martin (1889) 6/12/1913 They had two sons - my father-in-law who I knew as 'Pop' = Arthur Martin Hitt ( known as Martin) b 15/03/1916 Budleigh Salterton d 31/03/1991 Exeter married Ethel Margery Nicholson (known as Margery) on 16/08/1947 at Wesley Methodist Church, Gateshead. She was born 28/11/1923 and died 6/10/2012 Arthur Martin's brother was William Harold Hitt b 20/06/1920 in Budleigh Salterton. I shall be attending his funeral on Friday this week, as he passed away on Jan 6th 2014. My father -in-law had two sons...... David Martin Hitt b 22/05/1948 Exeter ie my brother in law and my late husband Andrew Peter (Andy) Hitt b 17/11/1949 Exeter died of Leukaemia 30/10/2008 in hospital in Taunton. I guess this will tie in with your tree, I hope so. Some years ago we heard from a lady in New Zealand who thought we were the same branch, but Andy and I spent many hours in the Devon Records office to prove that we were, as far as Thomas Hitt 1761, but then we follow on from Henry 1785 and she follows from his brother Thomas 1783 who married Elizabeth Damet, so if you happen to be that line too, I probably have more info or can put you in touch with New Zealand. Where abouts are you? In the UK? Looking forward to hearing from you again - not sure if I should have written this much here! Best wishes Chris Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 1. [HITT] Mary "Polly" (Pace) (Rhodes) Hitt's children.
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: hrhodes02 Surnames: Rhodes, Hitt, Carson, Pace Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.hitt/622/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Jesse Rhodes the youngest son of James and Mary "Polly" Rhodes. In December 1821 Jesse sold 85 acres of land to his Uncle, Martin Van Buren Hitt, for $1000. The 85 acres was given or sold to Jesse by his Mother and her sisters, Charity and Charlotte. Going rate for land was $15 to $25 per 100 acres. Jesse was getting his affairs in order so he could marry Nancy Carson when she became of age. In December 1823 Jesse and Nancy eloped to Georgia to get married. The Carsons didn't like Jesse Rhodes dating Nancy. Her Grandfather James Carson Sr. was so mad that he left her out of his will, but listed all his grandchildren and gave each $50. Jesse supported his brother's family, Arthur Rhodes' family, until Dec. 1823. Arthur had gotten into trouble so many times and was asked to leave Edgefield County after 1810 and before the War of 1812. Both Jesse and Arthur served in the War of 1812. Arthur and Jesse were named in their Mother's Will. Mary "Polly" Hitt died before her Mother. Sarah Hitt's Will shows she divided Mary "Polly's" share between her heirs, naming Jesse and Arthur Rhodes. Rhodes sons of Mary "Polly" (Pace) (Rhodes) Hitt are James (2), Arthur, and Jesse. Which HITT did Mary "Polly" Rhodes marry? Has anyone that is a descendant of James (1) Rhodes done a Y-DNA test so we can compare the results?
