Gordon, I assume that you are referring to the following, Quote from: Baptist Encyclopedia, by Cathcart, p. 65: "Rev. Lewis Ball, an active and efficient minister in Northwest Mississippi, was born in South Carolina in 1820, came to Mississippi and began to preach in 1844. His abundant labors have greatly advanced the cause of truth. By his labors the Sunflower Association was established. He was a Colonel in the Confederate Army." This quote has some obvious errors; i.e., "Colonel in the Confederate Army" presumes that he fought in the Revolutionary War (about 1776). If this Lewis was born in 1820, it is doubtful that he would have been a "Colonel in the Confederate Army". I am also unsure of the birth date, although it was probably close to 1820. He was a minister; ref quote from: Mississippi Baptist Preachers: "This beloved man of God is one of the noblemen of the Baptist ministry of Mississippi. He is one of the patriarchs, whom every one delights to honor. But, although his work has been so valuable in the State, and has extended over so long a period of its history, he has not yet consented to furnish the data necessary in the preparation of a sketch of his life and work. His life has been one of activity and great usefulness." Lewis, Jr. is the son of Capt. Lewis Ball and Sarah Hitt. Earl J. I am searching for any information on the ancestors of Aubrey Newton Hitt, born abt. 1915 in Texas. Father's name unknown -- -possibly John Newton Hitt. Aubrey married Faye Mitchell about 1930. Children: Joe Stephen Hitt, born 1934; Martha, born ?; and Barbara, born 1932. The family lived in the Valley Mills, Texas area, which I believe is near Austin. Unfortunately, this is all the information I have at the present. Any help will be appreciated. Charles, The second adult Peter Hitt b. abt 1745, the son of Joseph Hitt and Mary Coons(Cuntze). The following is what I have on him: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --- 1. Peter HITT was born about 1745 in Fauquier County, Virginia. He died about 1806 in Laurens County, South Carolina. Peter was the first Hitt to purchase land in Laurens County, South Carolina. He bought 185 acres in November 1785 from Samuel Eakins (Laurens County Deed Book B, pp 117-118). In June 1785, Peter sold 140 acres of land in Halifax County, Virginia to George Wiley (Halifax County Deed Book 13, p 207), prior to moving to South Carolina, therefore, he must have moved to South Carolina in the summer of 1785. Peter appears in the first U.S. Census of 1785 in Halifax County, Virginia as follows: Peter Hitt, 8-persons, 1-dwelling, 5-other buildings. Peter died intestate and on 3 February 1806, Mary, Peter's wife, consented to the appointment of her sons David and Thomas as administrators to Peter's estate; Lazarus Hitt was bondsman. (Laurens County will Book c, pp 210-211). In the consent Mary listed her children and appointed Lazarus Hitt, her brother-in-law, bondsman. Based upon the 1810 Federal Census, it is believed that Mary was living with her son Larkin in Laurens County. He was married to Mary ????. Peter HITT and Mary ???? had the following children: Thomas, Abner, David, Benjamin, Larkin, and Elizabeth HITT. -------------------------------------------End Note. Hello folks - I've just joined this list hoping to track down some kin. My gg-grandfather's sister, Susan Ann GOODMAN b. ca. 1816 NC, married Charles B. HITT in Augusta GA on 2/23/1832. She was the third child and oldest daughter of my ggg-grandparents Rev. William GOODMAN and Dorothy McDONALD (widow of Captain Allen of Georgetown SC), who were married in NC in 1810. Dorothy died in Greeneville TN on 4/2/1825, probably in childbirth or related complications. William and the remaining family moved to Augusta soon afterwards, and he remarried there in 1826. There were also two or three younger children including my gg-grandfather Robert McAlpin Goodman. Susan married fairly young (about 16), and she and Charles Hitt (to quote from the family history written by my g-grandfather William McDonald Goodman in 1931) "had six sons - Virginius, Will, Robert Goodman (Hood), Henry, Joe Eve, and Charlie - the first three being old enough to join the Confederate army (Cousin Hood was seventeen when he enlisted), and all were fortunate enough to take part in hard-fought battles, from Bull Run to Appomatox, without receiving serious wounds. Cousin Virginius was educated as a physician and surgeon, and had some practice in hospitals during the war. After returning to Augusta he began the practice of medicine and became the leading physician of that city. "Capt. R.G. A long account of the heroism of that young man appeared in one of the Savannah papers. I remember reading it, and am sorry it was not preserved. I may add just here that another noble act was performed by Cousin Hood, who, upon the death of his brother, entered the fever stricken city and gave him a decent burial, knowing full well the risk he was taking, and that, if he did not take the fever and die, he would be forced to remain in the city and to live for some time under the most unpleasant conditions imaginable. "Virginius, Will and Joe were married, and I think some of their children are living in Atlanta and Augusta. Aunt Sue was the first of the family to pass away - Uncle Charlie and all of their sons have since followed her to the great beyond." I'd like to get in touch with any descendants of this line, and one thing I'm particularly interested in is the possibility that the Goodman family bible (if there was one, and you would think so, William Goodman being a Baptist preacher) may have gone to Susan as the eldest daughter, and stayed in the Hitt family. Here's hoping, Bob Goodman, Marietta GA

Peter Hitt, son of Henry and Alice Katherine (Holtzclaw) Hitt: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --- 1. Peter HITT[1,2,3] was born about 1763 in Fauquier County, Virginia. He died about 1836 in Greenville County, South Carolina. On 15 June 1784, Peter deeded 140 acres in Halifax County to George Wiley (Halifax County, Virginia Deed Book 13, p. 207). Peter appears in the first U.S. Census of 1785 in Halifax County, Virginia as follows: Peter Hitt, 1-person, 1-dwelling, 7-other buildings. Peter would have been 22 at the time and single. According to one source Peter moved to Greenville County, South Carolina in 1824 where in 1832 he made his will. An abstract of his will can be found in the book: "A Collection of Upper South Carolina Genealogical & Family Records", Vol II,, Edited by Jas. E. Wooley, 1981. In his will, Peter lists all of his children by his first marriage and also names his youngest children. Peter Hitt was paid by the State of Virginia for supplies furnished the Revolutionary troops in Halifax County, Virginia (Public Service Claims, Department of Archives, Virginia State Library). Peter was 1st married about 1781; wife's name unknown. Peter HITT and his first wife had the following children: Elizabeth, William, James, Nancy, Sarah, Robert, John, Henry, Susannah, and Thomas HITT. Germanna Record #1 is a good general reference, but one should check the facts with other references. I have never found a reference, other than GR#1, that gives Sinai George as the wife of this John Hitt. John's middle name was not "Day" as far as I can determine. Perhaps the following excerpts from my data base will be of some help. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --- 1. John HITT[1,2] was born about 1769 in Virginia. John is listed as a tithable in his father's family in 1789 which indicates that he was born about 1769.
