Hi: Found this (below) in the Randolph Co. Gen Society Journal Spring 1997 Volume XXi, No l For those who collect their ancestor's signatures - Thomas A. Hinds would have signed the jury verdict that is posted below. I don't have this Thomas Hinds in my database - anyone have him connected to a line? Regards, Nan [email protected] ---------------------------------- "Randolph County Coroner's Inquests 1808 - 1848 The following coroner's inquests are location in NC State Archives under Randolph Co. Misc. Records - CR 81.928.7. The are categorized by decade - each decade having its own folder. The records are of three types. The most common is the coroner's jury verdict. The document itself is signed bvy all members of the jury, most of whom wer near neighbors of the dead individual. The coroner also signs the document. Another less frequent type of coroner's records, and a much less informative one is the coroner's account. The presence of these accounts is a clear indicator that farm more inquests took place than we have verdicts. The third and least common record consists of direct evicence taken from witnesses about the circumstances of a aprticular death. These are most informative and interesting and truly open up the lives of the people involved. An effort have been made to abstract the contents of such evidence in brief and pointed form below. In the case of the most common type of record - the coroner's jury verdict - it is necessary to establish a standard template for abstracting. We have chosen the following model: A. Name of deceased individual B. Site of inquest/place where body was discovered (if specified and distinct from inquest site) C. Date of inquest/date of death if specified or distinguished D. Witness names (if recorded) E. Name of Coroner or Acting Coroner F. Coroner's Jury G. Verdict For the other two types of record, a more informal style of abstraction has been slected. The records so not appear in strict chronological order within the decade files." Found on page 16 of the same journal: "A. unknown woman slave of Martin W. Leach C. 21 Apr 1848/20 Apr 1848 E.
