Copyright 1946. Judge Armistead Henry Churchill, of Elizabethtown, Ky., was grandson of Armistead Churchill II and Elizabeth (Blackwell) Churchill, of Middlesex county, Virginia. Armistead Churchill II was son of Henry and Penelope Pope Churchill (widow of Colonel William Pope). Henry Churchill was the fifth child of Armistead Churchill II. Armistead Henry Churchill was the first child born to Henry Churchill and Penelope, his wife. Armistead Churchill II was born November 25, 1733; and Henry Churchill, December10, 1768. Armistead Henry Churchill was born September 19, 1796, and was married four times. First wife was Miss Crutcher; two daughters were born to this union, Penelope and Malvina. Penelope married a Mr. Eastin, and Malvina married Judge William Lancaster. Second wife was a Mrs. Blanton, who was the mother of one son. She had two daughters by Judge Churchill, Mariah and Julia. Mariah married Phillip Daniel and Julia, who never married, died when about 25 years of age. The third wife was Miss Lancaster, to whom was born one daughter, Nellie, who never married. The fourth wife was Mrs. Ford, who outlived Judge Churchill. She had one son by a former marriage. Judge Churchill was educated at Transylvania University at Lexington, Ky., and immediately opened his law office in Elizabethtown (1818). He had Thomas Lincoln, the father of Abe, to make an office table and six wood-bottom chairs for his office. The table and two of the chairs are still in possession of his descendants. Judge Churchill was elected to the State Senate in 1832, and was appointed Circuit Judge in 1833 while it was an appointive office, and continued as Circuit Judge for 14 years, resigning in 1847. The district then extended from Muhlenburg to Shelby counties, including both of these counties. He traveled over the circuit horseback. He owned a number of slaves, most of whom he had taught trades, some of them blacksmiths, some carpenters and some were deckhands on steamboats---all of which brought him considerable revenue. The Judge had a brick kiln burned on his place to build him a house, but while he was away in other counties holding court his father-in-law, Mr. Crutcher, sent teams and hauled the brick away and built his house on North Main Street, afterwards known as the Jacobs house, now owned by Miss Maggie Martin, so when the Judge came home, expecting to start building, he had to arrange to burn another kiln. He had Uncle Jack Quiggins to superintend the building. Mr. Quiggins was serving on the jury at the same time. If needed on the jury, the Judge would send a negro boy for Mr. Quiggins to come and serve on the jury. Judge Churchill superintended the building of what was known as the Ben Hardin Helm home on Poplar Street for his sister, Mrs. McKinney. This property is now the home of Mrs. H. L. James. Judge Churchill died at his home in this city on March 22, 1880. ______________________________ I am trying to figure out where this fella fits in, I know he must..just which father was his? 3 Sarah Hynes (Andrew Hynes & Elizabeth Warford, Wm Hynes & Hannah Coombs) b 1778 d 1800-1803 + Armistead Churchill md Jan 29 1795 Brides: Nelson Co KY marriages Churchill, Armstead to Miss ________ Hynes 29 Jan., 1795 ======================================== Mrs. William Duvall Vertrees (nee Eliza Anthony Haynes) was born in Bedford co Va Oct 23 1824, the dau of Dr. John Haynes, a graduate of Yale Medical School, and Matha Barrett Campbell Haynes. She finished her education at Bethlehem Academy, near Elizabethtown, being the first graduate of the institution. She taught piano at Anderson Finishing School of New Albany, Ind for 7 years. She married Judge William Duvall Vertrees, of Elizabethtown, Ky Nov 23, 1854; to which marriage were born four children: Martha Bell, John Haynes, Charlie Churchill and Catherine Davis Vertrees. Being left a widow without means, she taught piano in Elizabethtown for many years, supporting and educating her children. She was an accomplished musician, as were her two daughters in later years, and her home became the musical and literary center of the town where musicians and other friends frequently gathered and enjoyed delightful evenings. She also possessed a talent for writing and many interesting articles and descriptions of important events were written by her for the local papers. She was one of the founders of the Christian church in Elizabethtown, was active in all its affairs and played the organ and taught a Sunday School class for many years. She was frequently called upon to play the organ in the Methodist and Presbyterian churches. She contributed greatly to the cultural life of the town, was held in the highest esteem by a host of friends who missed her sadly when she moved away. An extract from an insertion in Haycraft's History reads as follows: "Among those who have left an impression upon Elizabethtown and its people and who who stands out most distinctly was Mrs.William D. Vertrees, or 'Miss Eliza' as she was known to all of the children and most of the adults. Mrs. Vertrees was an active, highly intelligent, educated woman; a skillful musician and unusually well read in the best literature. She was a Christian woman who was interested in everything for the good of the town and its people. Because of her unusual mental and personal qualities she was one of the town's most beloved characters. Nearly all persons in Elizabethtown who know anything of music, got their grounding under 'Miss Eliza', and hold her among their fond recollections." The last eighteen years of her life were spent at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Christian M. Young, in Oakmont, Penn., where she died January 30, 1911, being survived by her daughter, Mrs. Catherine V. Young; two grandchildren, Vertrees Young and Louise Frances Young, of Oakmont, and a brother, James C. Poston, of Elizabethtown, to whose home her remains were brought. Services were held at the Christian church by Rev. D. W. Scott; she was buried in the city cemetery. At the time of her death The Elizabethtown News wrote of her: "Mrs. Vertrees spent nearly all of her life in Elizabethtown and was a woman noted for the brilliancy of her intellect, her rare musical accomplishments and her beautiful and saintly Christian life. Earlyin life she professed Christianity and before a Christian church was established in Elizabethtown, she was a most active Sunday School teacher in the Presbyterian church. For at least forty years of her life she was a leading and conspicuous character in the social and church life of this city and no one had more friends and admirers than 'Miss Eliza' as she was lovingly called by all who knew her. She always claimed Elizabethtown as her home, and as long as her strength would permit, came back to visit. She has gone to join the Choir Invisible and has left behind her the fragrance of a beautiful and useful life." ======== 3 Nancy Hynes (Andrew Hynes & Eliz Warford,Wm Hynes/Hannah Coombs) b 1784 + Wm Pope DuVall-lawyer of Bardstown b 1784 d Mar 18 1854 Wash DC son/o Wm DuVal Went to Florida 1822 when appt governor, no doubt where Nancy Hynes died.
