Hi Hinds-L mail listers & Nan Let me start by stating that I think having a copy of the Hinds eGroup archive available on RootsWeb via the HINDS-L list archive is a great idea and a wise move to preserve the information and make it more widely available. I will admit that searching archives at eGroups is not as easy as at RootsWeb.... but the fact is that the Hinds eGroup list archive can be searched -- by key word or phrase (apparently, two or more words are taken as a phrase). With Clif's departure, what will become of the Hinds eGroup list archives? ps: We will miss you Clif!!! How is the Hinds eGroup archive searched, you ask? I'll take you thru the steps from the beginning.... 1. surf on over to the eGroups homepage at http://www.egroups.com/ OR, start at http://www.egroups.com/mygroups 2. Sign In NOTE: If you have forgotten your password, there is a link on the sign in page to click on -- they will email you a code that will enable you to reset your password to a new one. 3. Upon sign in, you are taken to your "My Groups" page. You will see the "Hinds" list underlined and highlighted -- i.e. it is a clickable link -- click on it. 4. This will take you to the main Hinds list page: There is a table of archived messages by month -- not too much use if you are getting the messages delivered individually or in digest form. DO NOT USE the search window box on this page for the HINDS list -- it searches ALL eGroups archives. 5. On the left side of the main Hinds page, is a menu list -- click on the "Messages" link. 6. You then arrive at a page with the latest 30 messages displayed by date. All messages (330+) can be viewed one by one, as Nan has already noted. You can also re-sort the entire list by THREAD. This may be useful for locating replies. 7. The SEARCH window box at the top of this list of messages should appear with the default choice of "This Archive" -- but a drop-down menu allows you to chose "All eGroups". THIS IS THE PLACE TO SEARCH THE HINDS ARCHIVE. I did several tests on the search capabilities -- NOTE: I did NOT use any quotes [shown below] around my search words. I searched for "Corlis Hinds" [an abiding interest of mine] -- and found three messages from Nan with his name in the body of the messages, and not in the subject line. I searched on my name "Gord Hines" and on "ghines" [part of my email address]. Both searches hit my one post, msg #320. Another search using "GVST" from the subject (& message body) of my post located both my post #320 AND Nan's original post (#309) that contained the term gvst. "Clif Hinds" got 70 hits [not all were written by him]. "Nan Wolf" got 27 hits but "Nan & George Wolf" got 247!! This difference makes it clear the search is done on a "phrase" basis. [If the search was for "Nan" AND "Wolf", the result would also have been 247.] The question remains how long the eGroups archive will remain.... // Gord Hines (in Regina SK Canada) Nan & George Wolf wrote: Subject: Transcribing info from anothe Hinds archive Resent-Date: Wed, 26 Jul 2000 12:38:44 -0700 Resent-From: [email protected] Date: Wed, 26 Jul 2000 15:38:09 -0400 From: Nan & George Wolf <[email protected]> To: [email protected] > Hinds-L mail list members: > WARNING <g> > > Clif Hinds the administrator of the Hinds list at egroup aka onelist.com is > leaving the country for three to five years.
