The North Carolina State archives can be searched on-line at the following URL http://www.ah.dcr.state.nc.us/sections/archives/arch/mars.htm I found the index for my ggg(g?)-grandfather's Guilford County land grant here, and then ordered a hardcopy from the state for a $10 lookup fee and $2 photocopy fee. The on-line index gave me the acreage, approximate location, and date entered and issued. All I had to do was inquire by name, and it showed me a list of the documents on file for that individual. The deed for the sale of that land was not in the state archives, however, but rather seems to be on file with the county." ------------ Comments from another on the same list: "When I followed directions and clicked on MARS, nothing happened on my Windows 98 computer. I asked the Archivist what was wrong and she told me that I needed Telnet and sent me instructions on how to get it. Win 98 comes with Telnet so I tried Mars on my old computer. Clicking on Mars produced a prompt that wanted a host name. Mars was not the answer so I tried the Archivist again. She gave me the host name of:aviion.dcr.state.nc.us This works. At the prompt, you type mars and then, for the password, type mars again. So far, I have not found anything on Mars but I have hope!"
