Hi: I ran across this great website concerning the minutes of the Hinds Valley, TN church members. This is the Hinds Valley near Rockwood and NOT the one north of Knoxville near the Cumberland Gap. I am pasting the names of the Hinds members in 1833 below - also the Hankins and Higgins which are names connected with Hinds. Dismissed by letter may mean that they are being transferred to another place. Correct me if I am wrong, please. These numbers indicate the order in which the names were listed on the church clerks hand transcription (ascendingorder: 1-146) . This was probably the order in which the members joined the church. The Hinds Valley church claimed 1820 as its beginning although it was under the name of Bullock Pen church. It was located where its cemetery still is, in Roane Co., TN, south of Rockwood, & 1.7 mi. N. of the Rhea County line, in Glen Alice, across Hwy. 27 from Whites Creek Church. 1833- 1924--Hinds Valley church existed under its own name, the church changed its name from Bullock Pen to "Hindses Valley church in March 1833 (see page 48). 1835-1868 or later--Arm of church existed as "Hines Valley Church at Crab Orchard Creek, Morgan County. Location not known but supposedly near Oakdale. 1924, May 10--The Hinds Valley church in Roane County disbanded, writing letters of recommendation for each other to sister churches. 1924-1930s--Hinds Valley church building was moved to Birds Branch, according to Edna Clacks conversation in Oct. 2000, with her uncle William (Bill) Baxter Clack (1905- 2000), who remembed attending Hinds Valley church a couple of times with his grandfather. We regret the recent passing of Mr. Clack. The location is west of Rockwood toward Crossville, off Hwy 70, north of Westel, between Hwy. 70 and I-40. ================================= Acknowledgements Many thanks to Edna Clack of Rhea County, who has helped tremendously with information about the churches and with putting these minutes on her website. Also, a lot of gratitude goes to Paul Webb, an archeologist in Durham, NC, who recently came out of the blue with another record book of original and transcribed Hinds Valley minutes. These were handed down from his grandmother Nora Collins Webb (1881-1975), who lived on No Pone Valley Road in Meigs County. He has willingly performed many look-ups to fill in gaps in the compilers originals. His minutes, which extend much further than those of this compiler, have also solved two mysteries: the connection between the Bullock Pen and the Hinds Valley churches (see page 28 "name changed...) and the discovery of the date that Hinds Valley church disbanded (1924). Thanks to Paul, these minutes were put on microfilm (#1046 at the State Library and Archives in Nashville, Tennessee). Mr. and Mrs. James Hinds, the only Hinds family still remaining in Hinds Valley, invited me into their lovely home, which overlooks the Hinds Valley Cemetery and the Church site, and provided valuable historical information. Julie Cromwell deserves many acknowledgements for the wonderful job she does with the Morgan County webpage. Thanks for putting these minutes on line, Julie. Also, thanks to my son Jim Syler, who helped critique some of the material, and was my ftp trouble-shooter; to my brother Stanley Davidson, who thrashed through the woods helping me look for the sites of the old Hinds Valley and Crab Orchard Creek churches; my nephew Craig Davidson, who spurred me on in learning to put these minutes on the web; to my brothers Johnny, M. T., and Wesley Davidson for (respectively) computer and web assistance, helpful advice when requested, and some preliminary scanning and formatting; to Dr. K.K. Collins, Professor,Department of English, Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, Illinois, for additional advice; and to all of the above for their valuable encouragement throughout this long and tedious project.
