    1. [HINDS] Need siblings for David Hinds, died 1843 Crawford Co. AR
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: HINDS/HINES MATTIX DOWNEN BASHAM LEDFORD AUTRY Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/EKj.2ACIB/314 Message Board Post: Hi: David Hinds, died Dec 1843 in VanBuren, Crawford Co. AR. His oldest child was 12 - not old enough to be named in the estate papers. His heirs were named in the newspaper as Mrs. Margaret (Mattix) Hinds (widow), Esther (?) Hinds Eppler (his widowed but re-married mother), Jonathan Eppler and a John Hinds of KY. Could the last be a brother? So far I have not located any siblings of David Hinds, son of Esther & John Hinds. Esther is born in TN according to the 1850 census. It is said that David Hinds was born in KY and John and Esther did sell land in 1805 in Wayne Co. KY. Do they have any children besides David? David may have named a child after a sibling but his first two sons and first two daughters were named after their grandparents. His third son was named Archibald Yell Hinds - but Gov. Archibald Yell had been married by the same parson in Lawrence Co. AR & was a young attorney in VanBuren when the Hinds arrived so they may have named him after a friend - Archibald Yell before he became well-known. David & Margaret named their later daughters, Cynthia (Margaret's sister was Cynthia) and Mary. Marg. did not have a sister, Mary. Could she have been named after a sister of David? There is a "MARRIAGE - On the 14th day of May, by Josiah Wynne, Esq., Mr. Robert Russell, to Miss Sarah Jane Hinds; all, of this county." Who is she? Nan Wolf 71532.734@compuserve.com

    1. [HINDS] Hinds & Hines Pensioners 1840 census
    2. Nan & George Wolf
    3. Hi: Our local FHC (Family History Center) has the book of which I am pasting parts below. I found the Hinds & Hines because it is indexed and plan to send the Haines,Haynes, Hynds next week when I return to the FHC. The book is divided into states and counties so if there is a certain town or county which interests anyone on this list as to the 1840 pensioners in the town - let me know. This pension was only for people who were not well-off financially. What is this list important? Well, if you find your man on it - you can send for the pension application which tells all kinds of things about him and his military service. if it is a spouse - she needs to show proof of the marriage - primary source!! The list below gives the name of the pensioner (or surviving spouse), his age, and the head of the house in which he is living. I also copied the names of the pensioners in the same town in case allied surnames are mentioned. 3. Hi: Just discovered a site that has first hand accounts of U.S. westward expansion. It is at: American Journeys -- Eyewitness Accounts of Early American Exploration and Settlement: A Digital Library and Learning Center http://www.americanjourneys.org/ Regards Nan 71532.734@compuserve.com ==================== Found using the search at: http://www.americanjourneys.org/ Journal in the Form of a Letter Covering the Period from the 20th of July 1738, When I Left Michilimackinac, to May, 1739, Sent to the Marquis de Beauharnois by La Vérendrye, Pierre Gaultier de Varennes, Sieur de, 1685-1749 "I sent off my son the Chevralier this morning, the 16th of April in the company with a savage, to go and explore the region near the fort on Lake Winnipeg and examine the rivers that flow into that lake, especially the Blanche River where I propose to go on the return of our canoes, also the mine on the lake and on the Blanche River, and to explore the outlet of the lake and make a circuit of it, and try to prevent the savages from going to the English by encouraging them to look for our arrival in a short time. Footnote: River Blanche is shown on the 1739 map, and is evidently the Saskatchewan. J. B. Tyrrell, in support of this view, notes that the Saskatchewan as shown on Jeffrey's map of 1762 as White's or Hind's River. (Geol. Survey of Canada Report 1898, 89G.) On the other hand Dr. Eliot Coues notes that Sir Alexander MacKenzie and D. W. Harmon refer to the Winnipeg as White River, 'after River Blanche of the French' (New Light, etc. I 27) Nan's comment: There must have been a Hinds in this region at some time - how else would someone call a river the Hinds River?.

Regarding Lorenzo Hinds' death, Nan asks: > Where in California? and Bill answers: >born 17 Feb 1884 in Arkansas and died 18 Feb 1972 in Santa Cruz County, My notes say Bonny Doon CA, but I can't find such a town on my map. I assume it is in Santa Cruz County. Bill also asks: >While you do not know of another King woman marrying a Hinds, do you know >if there were any male candidates for such a marriage? Maybe, but it doesn't seem likely to me. Lorenzo had 7 brothers. Abraham married Violet Tucker and Rachel Goddard. Holland married Julia Jones. Sylvester married Mrs Mary Wilson. George and Miller died young. John S "went west", probably to California with his brothers Holland and Sylvester. The last brother was Sylvanus, who died in Hindsville in 1863, just before his 20th birthday. I don't know for sure, but I think he never married. At any rate, he was not alive in 1872 when Minerva King died. I don't know exactly when the three brothers went to California, but I'm fairly certain they were not married at the time. Holland and Sylvester's children were born in CA. I don't know if John S ever married. He died in 1874 at age 30, but that's all I know about him. Sylvanus and John S are the only real possibilities for the other Hinds, and neither of them seems very likely. Sorry Nan, but the brothers didn't go to Tulare Co that I know of. Sylvester was in Plumas Co, and Holland was in Sonoma Co. Again I don't know about John S, but one story says he went to San Francisco. The other Hinds may have been a cousin of Lorenzo, rather than a brother. My William Hinds had a couple of sons I haven't been able to track down. William Jr born 1833 is supposed to have married a Virginia (unknown), or a Talitha (unknown). I question both of those marriages, though. James D born 1836 married a Martha (unknown), who may have been the widow of a Guthrie. Could any of those women be the missing King? Ed, the information you sent me doesn't seem to say if Minerva's sister had any Hinds children when the Moores were sent to live with her. Do you have anything on that? It might help me match up with William or James. >I wonder about the significance of the given name "Columbus"; which family >was it common to -- Hinds, King or Moore. You say that the eldest son of I'm not sure it has a significance, other than that it was a popular name in the 1800s. It was used in several of my Hinds branches, but also in many other families in my database. I think it was just an example of the historical names fad, like all the children named Benjamin Franklin whatever or Thomas Jefferson something. >Since Lorenzo Hinds is apparently not buried with his wife, Mary Jane, in >the Hindsville Cemetery, I wonder what happened to him. Are you sure about that? I have a book on Hindsville published by the Madison Co Genealogy & Historical Society. It has a listing of the Hindsville Cemetery, and shows Lorenzo. It shows him right next to Mary Jane. His dates are given as 1835-10-19 to 1885-01-22. Teresa adds: >If you have any other info on JCC Hinds, I would love to hear >about it. I don't have much on John himself. He was born 1861-03-16 in Madison Co AR and died 1941-06-26 in Waco TX. His wife Sarah died 1931-03-08, also in Waco. John's siblings were: Margaret Staltany Hinds 1862, who died as a baby Richard Greenleaf Magruder Hinds 1863 Sylvester Hinds 1867 Thomas W Hinds 1869 Susan Arvilla Hinds 1871 Allen Hinds 1873, who died as a baby Walter L Hinds 1874, who died as a baby I haven't been able to trace any of them. Nan asks: > Does anyone on this list have a timeline of the Hinds in Hindsville, >Madison Co. AR? Madison Co. touches the northeast corner of Crawford Co. >Was their father Levi also in Hindsville? Or did they >arrive in Hindsville after my John's death in 1838 in Crawford Co. AR? I haven't ever worked up a real timeline on them, I'm afraid. As far as I can tell, my Hindses came to Arkansas in early 1832, plus or minus a year. They were there well before 1838. Levi was with them. I'm fairly sure he died about 1847 in Madison Co, but I have not found his grave. 3. While searching the North Carolina Archives, I found a reference to a book written by Gail Hinds Bowden about the Hinds Family. I have written to Mrs. Bowden but have gotten no response. I found the book in the Texas State Library and have received a few pages from them. The book was given to the Library by Helen B. Frantz. Mrs Bowden lists her earliest ancestors as Joseph Hinds and wife, Esther, of Anson County, NC. She said that Joseph was the father of at least 10 children, Levi, Simeon, Joseph, a daughter name unknown, Abigail, John, Jane, William, Asa and Samuel. Someone, presumably Mrs. Frants, had scratched through some on the names of the children and had written in others. Her list was Levi, Simeon, Joseph, Abigail, Samuel, a name I cannot read but which may be Charity, Hannah, Ruth, Mary, another name I cannot read and Sarah. Mrs. Bowden said that Joseph Hinds died 2 Jul 1804 in Know County, TN. Both of these lists vary from the list that David Trimble and Kay Lamb included in their books. Samuel, John and Jane are only in the Bowden list. In checking the Genealogy.com archives, I find that there was a Samuel Hinds in Knox County who may have been the son listed by Mrs. Bowden. As we all know, there were a lot of Hinds men named John but Mrs. Bowden's John appears to be a different one. Does anyone have any additional information on this family? Barbara

    3. Ken, Thanks for the response to our inquiries. Sarah Frances Ross was my 3rd great aunt. If you have any other info on JCC Hinds, I would love to hear about it. I have information about the Hinds family of Hindsville. This is my line. My ggg-grandfather was William Hinds. The town is named after his brother John, who donated land for the Post Office and school. William and John's father was Levi Hinds, who was a son of Captain John Henry Hinds. Lorenzo James "Ringo" Hinds who married Mary Jane King was a son of the above John. I don't know of another King woman marrying into this Hinds branch. I also had not heard about Lorenzo and Mary taking in any additional children, but your information matches them otherwise. Margaret King, Mary's mother, is in the Hindsville cemetery. Her tombstone says she was born 1800-10-17 and died 1875-05-10. Ed, can you tell me the names of Mary's parents? I'd like to have that for my database. Sarah Frances Ross' husband was John Christopher Columbus Hinds, oldest son of Lorenzo. According to their son James Lorenzo, they were married in Hindsville after John C C came back from Beaumont TX, where he had been working to grade a railroad. They had 3 children as Teresa stated. James Lorenzo Hinds was born 1884-02-17 in Hindsville and died 1972-02-xx in California. Catherine was born about 1888. Arvilla was born 1890-09-09. I don't have any more information on Lorenzo's other children, but I do have information on the rest of the Hinds families in Hindsville. Is there anything else you want to know about them? 3. Thanks Ken, for your response on the Hinds of Hindsville, Arkansas. I was glad to learn that they did indeed contribute to the town's name. I am prompted to ask several more questions of you. While you do not know of another King woman marrying a Hinds, do you know if there were any male candidates for such a marriage? I wonder about the significance of the given name "Columbus"; which family was it common to -- Hinds, King or Moore. You say that the eldest son of Lorenzo and Mary Jane King Hinds was named John Christopher Columbus Hinds. Noble Hamilton and Minerva King Moore named their first born William Columbus Moore. And Noble Hamilton Moore had a cousin named Columbus Moore. Since Lorenzo Hinds is apparently not buried with his wife, Mary Jane, in the Hindsville Cemetery, I wonder what happened to him. You asked about Mary Jane King Hinds' parents. That was my long quest, and has been only partially answered. Her mother is the Margaret King you referred to (1800-1875, born in North Carolina), but I don't know Margaret's maiden name or family history. I have proved to my satisfaction, but not with genealogical assurance, that Margaret was married to one William King, born about 1799 in North Carolina. It's a very long story, and I am going to send it to you privately. I don't know if you will find much new Hinds information, but there is some good Arkansas history recorded there. Thanks again, Ed Moore

Does anyone on this list have Hinds that are connected with or visited with family in Tulare Co. CA in the late 1800s? My ancestor, Archibald Yell Hinds, migrated at age 15 with his older brother (abt 21yrs) to Tulare Co. CA from Van Buren, AR which is across the river from Ft. Smith. 3. Nan: I believe we have talked about John Hinds of Crawford Co, AR before. If not, there is no known connection between him and my John Hinds, b. 1799 in KY and died after 1880 census in MS. I do suspect there is/was one. I just don't know what it was. Arkansas became a state in 1836. Many of the early settlers were people in Van Buren/Crawford County settled there after traveling up the Arkansas River. Like my John Hinds, I wonder if he might have been a river freighter hauler? Re: Bakersfield. As we have discussed, I have Hinds cousins there now, but they were not there until early 1930's. There are, however, two sons born around 1830-1835 that I have never even identified, let alone know where then went, plus another two born 1861-1865 that I don't know what happened to them. They would, of course have been a bit young to be in California with Mom and Dad still in MS. These two younger sons, born in early to mid 1860's were Marion and John H. Hinds. If any of this connects with anyone, please let me know. 3. According to the California Index to Death Certificates, James L. Hinds was born 17 Feb 1884 in Arkansas and died 18 Feb 1972 in Santa Cruz County, California. His SSN was 462-34-4565. About 75 percent of the time the California Death Certificate Index will also give the mother's maiden name. However, his is not listed. 3. Howdy Ed and Teresa I've been out of town for the last week, or I would have written sooner. 1. [HINDS] Alexander, Patriot (of Hinds Valley TN)
    2. Nan & George Wolf
    3. Hi: I think I have sent this before but am sending it now just in case................. At the website below there is a great biography of Wm Alexander, patriot of the Rev. War. I am pasting just the bit about the fact that he bought land in Hinds Valley in Knox Co. TN. I believe this is the Hinds Valley that is now in Anderson & Union Counties TN - north of Knoxville & southwest of Maynardville - near the KY border. There is another Hinds Valley in the middle of the state. It seems that both valleys were settled by different children/grandchildren of Joseph Sr. who died 1772 in Guilford Co. NC. If you are familiar with the Over Mountain men - Wm. Alexander was one of them. They congregated from VA, KY and TN at Sycamore Shoals (in TN) on the west side of the mountains before marching over and through the mountains to fight at Kings Mountain in SC. They were featured in the movie, The Patriot with Mel Gibson, where movie license turned them into men of the swamp. My family and I have followed their trail over the mountains from Sycamore Shoals to the battleground in SC. - quite a feat in the time it took them to get there. Can't figure out why the movie moguls didn't want to feature such an accomplishment. If I remember correctly the move had them simply coming out of the swamps not marching over an entire mountain range. His entire bio is at the website below. Regards Nan 71532.734@compuserve.com ================================== http://owslfl.tripod.com/williamalexander/ William Alexander "American Patriot" By 1807, William Alexander had moved to Knox County, Tennessee. On November 9, 1807, he purchased 300 acres of land located at Hickory Creek in Hinds Valley in Knox County, Tennessee. The land bordered Beaver Creek Ridge and Black Oak Ridge. William resided in Knox County until about May of 1838, when he moved to Hamilton County, Tennessee to live with his son, David Alexander.
