    1. [HINDS] Sarah Hinds + Joseph Marsh
    2. Ken Hinds
    3. Nan posted an article about Sarah Hinds who married Joseph Marsh, son of Samuel Marsh. I think this Sarah is a daughter of James II Hinds of Elizabethtown, James being the son of immigrant James of Salem. Another researcher sent me this reference: page 614 of Volume VII of the Compendium of American Genealogy by Frederick A. Virkus Published in 1928: Marsh Joseph (1663 - 1723), of Elizabeth, N. J.; mem. Gen. Assembly, 1710; m. Sarah Hinds (James7 [1643 - 1719], L. I. to Elizabeth, 1677; James6, Eng. to Salem, Mass., ca 1637, thence to Southold, L. I.);" I don't have access to the Compendium, so I haven't followed up on this. I find it interesting that James of Salem is shown as the 6th generation, implying that they have 5 generations of his ancestors. Also note that the 1731 will of James Hinds of Elizabethtown mentions land adjoining Samuel Marsh. That should be James III s/o James II, next to Samuel II s/o Samuel. However, there are a lot of entries at RootsWeb, and at least one message on Genforum, that say Sarah Hinds was a daughter of Joseph Hinds + Anne (unknown). The dates given for Joseph are the same as the dates I have for James II. Could James II's middle name have been Joseph? Note that there was also a Joseph Hinds of Elizabethtown who was killed by an overturned cart. His wife was Anne, and he had 8 children. Sarah might be one of them. 1. [HINDS] Sarah Hinds/Joseph Marsh - CT to NJ
    2. Nan & George Wolf
    3. Hi: Note the mention of Elizabethtown, NJ - a known Hinds hangout. This Marsh family moved from New Haven CT to Elizabethtown NJ in 1665 - the year that England took possession of New Jersey from the Dutch. They are one of the original settlers of Elizabethtown. Sarah Hinds & children are mentioned in the last paragraph. This is from a Marsh family website. Regards Nan 71532.734@compuserve.com ------------------------------------------------------------ Found at: http://www.billputman.com/Marsh.pdf SAMUEL MARSH Samuel Marsh was born in Essex County, England about the year 1620. There are references that his father may have been John Marsh born in 1589 and his mother may have been Grace Baldwin, but I have no proof. Some sources state he was in Boston by 1641, others state he came directly to the colony in New Haven in the summer of 1645. Although he was not listed as an original planter, he was carried on the records as a resident of New Haven in 1646. He was in the Militia records on April 7, 1647. It seems he was fined two shillings six pence for missing training three times to "seek cowes". He took the oath of Fidelity in New Haven on May 2, 1647 and was then made a Freeman. Samuel married about 1647. His wife was named Comfort. Most sources feel her maiden name was Mann, but no one seems very positive about it. They appear as members of the First Church of Christ in New Haven on List Number 2 dated February 11, 1655/56. It would seem that possibly there was a whole family that came from England. Samuel's brother Jonathan was there until about 1650 when he moved to nearby Milford, Connecticut and then to Norwalk, Connecticut by 1657. There was also a sister, Hannah, who married Lancelot Fuller in New Haven. Samuel and Comfort Marsh raised seven children while living in New Haven. In 1665, the family moved to Elizabethtown, New Jersey. In that year England took possession of New Jersey from the Dutch. Samuel Marsh was one of the original Eighty Associates who bought the Elizabeth-town Grant, East Jersey of some five hundred thousand acres, which covered all of the present day Union County, New Jersey. Their son, Samuel Marsh junior, was also one of the original eighty associates. Samuel took the oath of allegiance to King Charles II on February 16, 1665. In 1671, Samuel was in a major conflict with New Jersey Governor Carteret over land rights, but seems to have survived without any penalties. Samuel wrote his will on June 10, 1683 and mentioned his wife and children John, Joseph, Elizabeth and Samuel. He stated he was living at Wawanday. He died in September of 1683. The Will was probated on February 24, 1685. His widow, Comfort, was the executrix. They had seven children. MARY MARSH born in 1648 and unmarried. SAMUEL MARSH born February 12, 1649. He married Mary Trimmins in 1675 and later they moved to Philadelphia where he died in about 1684. COMFORT MARSH born August 22, 1652. She married Joseph Meeker on May 5, 1678 and died in December 1690. HANNAH MARSH born July 22, 1655. ELIZABETH MARSH born December 27, 1657. JOHN MARSH born May 2, 1661. John is our line and his life is covered next. JOSEPH MARSH born April 1, 1663. He married Sarah Hinds in 1697 and remained in New Jersey. Joseph died at Trembly Point, New Jersey in December 1723. Their children were: Sarah who married Benjamin Watkins, Samuel who married Mary Shotwell, Joseph who married Susanna, James, Charles

Surnames: Hinds, Sullivan, Rowe Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/EKj.2ACIB/317 Message Board Post: I am looking for any information on Robert Hinds (my great-grandfather) who states on the 1920 US Federal Census that he was born in New York City, married to Elizabeth (nee Sullivan) and had two daughters, Agnes and Margaret (my grandaunt & grandmother). Robert states that he was 49 at the time the 1920 Census was taken. I approximate his birth year of 1870-1871, give or take a year. I always hit a brick wall trying to locate Robert on other Census records; I am particularly interested in getting his parents names. Robert states that both his parents were born in England (exact locale unknown) as this was on the 1920 US Federal Census. Having his parental information would no doubt help my research. Any information would be appreciated. Thank you.

    3. Hi: I was visiting the Biography Resouce Center through my local library site and came across this Hinds listed below. Note that his parents names are included. There were about eight Hinds listed as contemporary writers but I am sending only the ones that had the names of the parents listed. Regards Nan 71532.734@compuserve.com ====================================== Asher Crosby Hinds 1863-1919 Birth: February 6, 1863 in Maine, United States Death: May 1, 1919 Occupation: Congressman, Parliamentarian Source: Dictionary of American Biography Base Set. American Council of Learned Societies, 1928-1936. BIOGRAPHICAL ESSAY Hinds, Asher Crosby (Feb. 6, 1863 - May 1, 1919), congressman and parliamentarian, was born at Benton, Me. His parents, Albert D. and Charlotte (Flagg) Hinds, died when he was still a boy. He was educated in the common schools of Benton, attended Coburn Classical Institute for a year, and graduated at Colby College in 1883. Soon after graduation he went to Portland and joined the staff of the Portland Daily Advertiser, of which a kinsman, Hobart W. Richardson, was then editor. First he learned the printer's trade, then, upon being made a reporter, he was so successful that in 1885 he was invited to join the Portland Daily Press. He was actively engaged on this journal for a number of years and at the same time acquired an interest in its ownership. His first acquaintance with legislative operations appears to have been gained soon after he joined the Press, when he covered a session of the Maine legislature and was said to have started an agitation for the removal of the capital to Portland which was defeated only by the intervention of James G. Blaine. When Thomas B. Reed became speaker in the Fifty-first Congress in 1889 he appointed Hinds speaker's clerk, but the adverse results of the elections of 1890 and 1892 relegated him again to his editorial duties. When Reed again became speaker in 1895, Hinds was promoted to the post of clerk at the speaker's table and at the advice of the speaker, who desired to make the position one of dignity and importance, began the study of parliamentary law and procedure. The diligence and capacity which Hinds displayed in this work made him an invaluable assistant to Speakers Reed, Henderson, and Cannon, and he retained his post at the speaker's table from 1895 to 1911. During his incumbency he was able to bring to completion his monumental work: Hinds' Precedents of the House of Representatives of the United States (1907-08), published as House Document 355, 59 Congress, 2 Session. This study had had its modest beginnings in a scrapbook in which he posted the rulings of various speakers and other useful material for consultation and had been preceded in 1899 by the publication of a valuable manual on the rules and practices of the House (House Document 576, 55 Cong., 2 Sess.). In its final form, containing five volumes of more than a thousand pages each, with a multitude of citations covering the entire history of the House, together with three additional volumes of index and digest, it constituted a work of unique importance. "His great work," says the historian of the House, "happily combines minuteness of research with wideness of vision. Nothing seems to have escaped his eye, or to have blurred his appreciation of the historic value of the slightest incident. . . . Congress should ever be proud that it possessed a teacher whose constructive work must always remain its richest heritage" (D. S. Alexander, History and Procedure of the House of Representatives, 1916, Preface, p. xiv). Hinds succeeded Amos Allen as representative of the 1st Maine district in 1911, but his health had broken under the strain of labors on the Precedents and his career as a member of the House (1911-17) was not conspicuous. It is also a matter of regret that failing strength had obliged him to abandon a projected biography of Speaker Reed which he would have been admirably qualified to write. His death took place in Washington, D. C. He had married Harriet Louise Estey of Roslindale, Mass., Sept. 3, 1891. -- William Alexander Robinson FURTHER READINGS [A. H. Despite being in a buoyant part of the city, the street has long had its eyesores and is under utilised because of a reluctance by property owners to invest in buildings there. However, a number of individual developers are currently planning to develop two new office blocks, a hotel, a new pub and a corporate headquarters for Dunnes Stores. "These, along with the recent opening of the new Dunnes Stores outlet, will hopefully kickstart the rebirth of the street," one property agent said. The footfall on the street, in other words the number of shoppers visiting it, has increased steadily over the last few years according to Philip Owens of Insignia Richard Ellis Gunne. "The development of the street is the logical solution to the increasing demand for locations on secondary streets in Dublin," he said. Local councillors discussed the development proposals for the street at last week's South East Area Committee meeting and welcomed the plans for both ground floor retail units and office development. However they would also like to see an increase in residential development. Dublin Corporation's planning division is currently considering a £20 million plan to remodel Castle House and Wicklow House at 73-89 George's Street by Chartered Properties Holdings. Castle House is owned by a consortium of private investors and Wicklow House is owned by the Irish Airlines Pension Limited. This development would be carried out in conjunction with the £5 million revamp of Dublin Castle by the Office of Public Work's (OPW), which includes a new walkway from George's Street and the development of a new public civic space within the grounds of the castle. The opening up of the old Informer's Lane will provide a new entrance and link the castle with Exchequer Street. The OPW is also planning to build an additional fourth floor to the existing Stamping Building within the castle. This will provide 550 square metres (5,920 square feet) of office space for the state. The redevelopment of 13,935 square metres (150,000 square feet) of office space in the two office blocks on South Great George's Street will include a new street frontage, the addition of a penthouse to the existing buildings and a six storey extension to the rear. The extension backs onto Dublin Castle. The building will stretch 100 metres along the street, according to architect John O'Keefe. Roderic O'Connor of Chartered Properties Holdings is heading up the development team. "Around 400,000 people visit Dublin Castle every year and the redevelopment of George's Street will make it a nicer place to visit. We are using modern designs but the materials will be in keeping with the style of the city," he said. The development is not due for completion until the middle of 2004. Three separate planning applications have been lodged with the local authority for the project. This is the biggest scheme ever planned by Chartered Properties Holdings -- they were previously involved in the Motor Centre in Tallaght and a number of smaller suburban retail schemes and residential developments. At the top of South Great George's Street, Dunnes Stores is planning to develop a further 23,225 square metres (250,000 square feet) of offices and retail space on the site of the former Connolly Shoes outlet. This will serve as an extension to the firm's corporate headquarters on the adjacent Stephen's Street. The firm recently opened a deli style supermarket further down the street beside the George's Street Arcade. A 2,415 square metre (26,000 square feet) hotel is planned for 63-63A South Great George's Street by DN Properties. The property will include a hotel, restaurant and bar, according to the planning application lodged in 1998. Next door at 64-65 South Great George's Street, Capital Bars, owned by the O'Dwyer Brothers, is planning a 929 to 1,393 square metres (10,000 to 15,000 square feet) bar and restaurant. It is believed a sushi bar is high on the list of possible theme bars for the site.

    3. Thank you, Nan. Joseph Hind(s) was evidently doing business as a broker in Dublin. I have not as yet figured out how to determine the dates of the Proni freeholder's list that show Joseph as a freeholder and am open to suggestions from the list. I would also encourage each of you who believe that your ancestor might have come from Ireland to check these lists. Barbara
