I don't know if Asa 1786 was the one in the War of 1812, but he is the only Asa Hinds I know about who would have been the right age. According to this page: http://www.rootsweb.com/~njmorris/militia/militia-b.htm there was an Asa Hinds in the Morris Co NJ militia in 1793. Obviously Asa 1786 would have been too young to be this one, but I don't know of an earlier Asa. Conceivably the one in 1793 could be the one in the War of 1812, though Asa 1786 seems more likely. I have reviewed film copies of the war records but did not copy very many of them. They are interesting but not useful for genealogical purposes. I have also looked at the deed indexes and secured copies of any relating to Joseph Hinds, Sr. or Jr., that were available. In several cases, the file was empty. In addition, I have ordered through the mail the other items mentioned in the index. Most of them are just copies of data available elsewhere. The only original document that I found was one written by Kay Lamb about her early research on the family. Her book, which reflects her final conclusions, is much more informative. In sum, the only documents that I have that someone might want are the deeds. I will be happy to mail copies to any who want them. Barbara
Earlier today [or rather on April 27 -- I originally posted this message on the board that day] I was exploring the search facility (http://www.ncarchives.dcr.state.nc.us/) of the State Archives of NC (http://www.ah.dcr.state.nc.us), and found some pertinent references, so I'm posting them here for your benefit too, in case you haven't seen it before. This stuff is from indices only; to get the info behind it, either someone would have to travel to the NC archives or would have to get information by mail. If it hasn't been done before, would it be possible for interested people to cooperate as a group to get this info, & then share it? They married in 1913, and had three children, including my dad. Greetings cousins, I've just joined the HINDS-L list & board, after having spent some time reading some of the entries. My first question: I saw several references to a book by Kathleen Lamb about a book she had written, based on primary sources, about John Henry Hinds & his descendants. What is the title of this book, & how might one acquire a copy? Is Kathleen Lamb still monitoring this list/board? I also saw references, here & elsewhere, to the Hinds family bible and John Henry Hinds' 1778 will (which was superseded by his later will), and to a Kathleen Parkman Lamb Collection at McClung, and would be interested in further info about them. Thanks. -- Melissa S. Green HINDS FAMILY LOCATIONS: New Jersey, North Carolina, Tennessee, Missouri HINDS FAMILY LINE: Descendant of Joseph Hinds (1705-1772) m. Dear Calvin, Nice to hear from you again! At this late date, I do not remember which line of the Hinds family that you are researching. Please reply to the list and give us as much information that you can about your Thomas Mack Hinds and his ancestors. Barbara
I am forwarding this for Calvin who is on our list and sent it to me accidentally. Regards Nan 71532.734@compuserve.com ========================= This is my first try at contacting the HINDS LIST. I have read the article about John H Hinds, and I'm still trying to determine just who is the subject of this report. Could this John H Hinds have had a son by the name of Thomas Mack Hinds, who was born around 1854, supposedly in Mississippi? Thomas M. Hinds father was supposed to have died in or near Chickasaw County, MS, and time time sounds about right to be this John H Hinds. Any information about this will be greatly appreciated. HISTORY OF RUSH COUNTY, INDIANA: From the earliest time to the present, with biographical sketches, notes, etc. Illustrated; Chicago: Brant and Fuller, 1888. p. 380. Bourbon County. HON. JOHN M. HUDELSON, deceased, was one of those rugged pioneers of Rush County, who have left the impress of their character and energy upon their communities. He began life with this century having been born January 1, 1800. The place of his nativity was Millersburg, Bourbon County, Ky., and his parents were John M. and Catharine (Irvin) Hudelson, both of whom were natives of Pennsylvania. He passed his youth and early manhood in Kentucky, and in the spring of 1828, located in the woods of Center Township, this county, where the remainder of his life was spent in usefulness and industry. He had visited this locality in 1822, and entered the land and afterward became his home. Possessing a strong and splendid physique, he was enabled by unceasing toil and frugality to gain a competence that was more than enough to soften the asperities of declining years, and smooth the pathway to the tomb. In 1824, Matilda Hinds, also a native of Kentucky, became his wife. She bore him five children: Francis I., Sarah J., Margaret E., Mary A., and Robert A. She departed this life in 1837, having been a devoted wife and mother and a consistent Christian. The second wife was Ann Hudelson, who became such in 1838. By her Mr. Hudelson was the father of two children, Lizzie and Henry. He was always foremost in the advocacy of whatever was for the good of society, and in him the public schools found an ardent supporter. In early life he was a Whig but with the downfall of that, he espoused the cause of the Republican party. He was Justice of the Peace, in Center Township, for two terms, having been the first to fill that position in the township. In addition to this he served one term as Associate Judge of the county, under the old judiciary system, and was for three terms a member of the State Legislature. His death occurred October 18, 1879, an event that caused much gloom through the community in which he had for more than fifty years been an honored and respected citizen. His portrait is presented with this volume as a fitting representative of those early settlers who contributed so largely to raise Rush County to its present prosperity.

Rockcastle County. ROBERT NELSON OWENS, the son of William and Kate (Tyree) Owens, was born in Rockcastle county, Kentucky, near Mt. Vernon. William Owens was born and reared in Rockcastle county, as were his parents. His father was of German descent. Mrs. Owens was of Irish descent, and a native of Rockcastle County, Kentucky. For over twenty years William Owens was a justice of the peace in his Kentucky home nd was a man of much importance, as the justice court had many cases to be heard. The justices sitting together comprised the county court. Mr. Owens was essentially a peacemaker, and he would often compel the antagonistic parties, who appeared in court with guns, to shake hands and pass the bottle. When all could be settled in this way, the justice would remit the fines and all would go home happy. He was not in the office for the money, but for the good that he could do. He did not seek the office, yet it was forced on him time and time again, the people recognizing his ability. Robert N. Owens lived on the home farm until he was twenty-one years of age, here he worked on the farm and made chairs until sixteen years of age; then he worked as a stone mason and carpenter. On coming to Salem (Washington County, Ind.) at this time, he devoted his energies to this trade, that of stone-mason, and later a contractor and builder of streets and roads. He has done much public and private work, building many of the bridges of the county and much of the street work in Salem has been done under his supervision. He also did the stone work for the Carnegie Library in his home town, as well as that for the Etyler opera house. His half-brother, John Owens, of Bedford (Lawrence County, Ind.), did the work on the public square in Salem in 1883. In 1903 Robert Owens and his brother, George, now of Mt. Vernon, Kentucky, formed a partnership for the making of monuments. The plant at this time is the best equipped of any in the southern part of Indiana. In 1909 he built a fine modern house, with every convenience, and here he and his family reside. The barn and other buildings are all in keeping with the house. In connection with his other work, Mr. Owens is also agent for the Maxwell car. In 1879 Mr. Owens was married to Clementine Collier, who died three years later and just before Mr. Owens came to Salem. On June 8, 1885, he married Sylvia Paynter, a native of Kentucky, and the daughter of John Paynter. Her father and mother died when she was but a small child and she made her home at first with her grandmother until her death and then with an aunt. Mr. and Mrs. Owens are the parents of three children, Lillian, who died when six years old; Arthur, who at present is in the auditor's office of the Louisville & Nashville railroad at Louisville. He married Elva Tatlock, daughter of John Tatlock, of Salem. Myrtle is the wife of Grover E. Hinds, who lives in Salem and has the agency for the Maxwell car. They are the parents of two children, Mildred and Robert Clinton. Mr. Owens' mother, Kate Tyree, was a native of Kentucky, and was the daughter of Solomon and Elizabeth Tyree, both of whom were of Irish descent. The father was a shoemaker in Rockcastle county. The mother still lives on the old homestead, near Brodhead, the father having died in1902. Mr. Owens is a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and the Red Men. He also takes much interest in the Salem fire department, of which he is a member. He and his family are active members of the Baptist church and take much interest in the services of the church.
