    3. You are correct. You would have to find a descendant of Asa Hinds who would join the Hinds DNA project to be sure that your Hinds genealogy was correct. You can have yourself tested but the results for women are not nearly so conclusive. Family Tree DNA is now offering a reduced price for testing women if you would like to try it. The DNA test draws no blood. All you do is scrap a few skin cells from the inside of your check on two separate occasions. The test is very accurate. Barbara

    3. Sadly not so cheap if one is in NZ. the exchange rate is not as good for us. Assuming I am able to get my son to part with blood, and money.... ( I am more interested in genealogy than my offspring)....I think it would be so interesting especially as I seem to have too many brick walls in my Hinds family. Thanks. Unfortunately I don't know any Hinds cousins at this point.... but luckily the evidence for my family's descent from Asa's daughter Susannah is pretty solid. > You can have yourself tested but the results for women > are not nearly so conclusive. Family Tree DNA is now offering a > reduced price for testing women if you would like to try it. I'll go to their website & check it out. I imagine that as DNA technology continues to advance, we'll eventually be able to tell even more about lines of descent. This is fascinating. It'd be very cool if eventually this project could help us conclusively solve the issue of who Joseph Hinds' (1705-1772) father was. -- Mel -------------- Melissa Saima Green <serkku@henkimaa.nu> -------------- Hiljaa hyvä tulee. 3. Barbara Finney wrote: > The Hinds DNA project is discussed on a web page that Ken Hinds has > donated. You will find it at http://hindskw.com/KennethHinds/DNA.html Thank you. But I'm a little confused. Ken's page says " Since the Y-chromosome is passed only from father to son, two men who share a common ancestor should have identical Y-chromosomes." That wording would indicate that my brothers and father (all surnamed Green) should be eligible for the program, because they share several common ancestors with other Hinds DNA project participants. But otherwise the page seems to indicate that only male direct-line descendants would be tested -- those who have the Hinds surname or vaiations. My Hinds line runs from Joseph Hinds through his son Capt. John Henry Hinds through his son Asa Hinds through his daughter Susannah Hinds, who was my great-great grandmother. So as I understand it, my father & brothers wouldn't be candidates for the Hinds DNA project because the direct male line within my family ended with Asa Hinds. But, they would be candidates for the Green DNA project (which I heard about on GREEN-L sometimes). Am I correct? -- Mel -------------- Melissa Saima Green <serkku@henkimaa.nu> -------------- Hiljaa hyvä tulee. 3. Cynthia and other interested in the DNA test. The test does not require blood. The DNA is extracted from saliva. The swabs are taken from inside the mouth. Not necessarily pleasant, but no sticking or gouging. Nor does it require a doctor to take the sample. 3. The Hinds DNA project is discussed on a web page that Ken Hinds has donated. You will find it at http://hindskw.com/KennethHinds/DNA.html We are interested in inviting everyone who might even remotely be related to join in the project. The exact spelling of the name is of no importance! So far, our group is very small but we have still gained valuable information. For example, Ken and I learned that our research which indicated that we were descendants of brothers born in the mid 1700's was correct. We also learned that we are closely related to the descendants of one Richard Perkins who lived a century earlier. We have not yet sorted that out but it has given us new leads. A member of another project has learned that she really may be a Hinds and not whom she thought she was. She had been told by her grandmother that her great grandfather was not her real ancestor and now she knows for sure. To me, DNA studies are the genealogy research of the future. Do join us and urge others to join! Barbara

In that regard, many times we have received requests from Group administrators to set up a Fund for their projects. The new link in your GAP - General Fund - is an area that will keep track of incoming funds, the balance in the account and to which kits the funds were applied. Family Tree DNA will enter the information for tracking purposes as soon as funds are received or disbursed. Funds can be sent by check, credit card or Paypal (in which case it needs to be sent to info@familytreedna.com), and identified as "For the XYZ Project General Fund". We would also like to bring to your attention that we have launched www.Mitosearch.org, the first worldwide mtDNA public database, and in conjuction with the launch of Mitosearch we are offering - during the month of October - mtDNA tests and its bundles at reduced prices.
