If you are interested in this message thread you need to go to the URL listed below. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/TKj.2ACIB/1838.1 Message Board Post: I have a Daniel Hines in Duplin County, NC in the 1780-1800 timeframe. This is my GGGgrandfather. There are quite a few folks trying to figure out the several Daniel Hines individuals in that area. This Daniel Hines was married to a Chloe Ivey in 1794 per a slave deed. I cannot say for sure if Chloe was a first wife or a latter wife at this time. The records are scarce in this area due to 3 Dobbs County Courthouse fires between 1759 and 1791 when Dobbs County was dissolved. Any records that survived for the most part were destroyed in a Lenoir County Courthouse fire in 1880. Many of these Hines families in the Duplin County area came from Bertie County and from Virginia. I do have quite a bit of information on the Duplin County, NC Daniel Hines but I cannot yet prove his father. If I can assist or you think this might be a canidate for your Daniel then let me know. I do believe this Daniel to have been born before 1755.

    2. Nan & George Wolf
    3. Hi: If you are not a member of the New England Hist. & Gen. Society - you might be interested in this message about free access to their online database of the NE Register. The rest of the online databases are evidently not free - just the Register newsletter but it has great articles about the early ancestral lines. The NE Register database will be free Nov. 25 through Nov 28 at: www.NewEnglandAncestors.org Regards Nan 71532.734@compuserve.com ====================== A Feast of Ancestors! Enjoy Free Access to the Register Online Over Thanksgiving Weekend! NEHGS is pleased to offer free access to its New England Historical and Genealogical Register database on NewEnglandAncestors.org over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend! Normally only available to NEHGS members, the Register database will be accessible to everyone from Thursday, November 25 through Sunday, November 28, 2004. We encourage all NEHGS members to spread the word about this offering, and we hope that those of you who are not members find a veritable feast of ancestors in the Register database! Published quarterly since 1847, The New England Historical and Genealogical Register is the flagship journal of American genealogy and the oldest journal in the field. The online database includes issues from 1847 to 1994. The Register has featured articles on a wide variety of topics since its inception, including vital records, church records, tax records, land and probate records, cemetery transcriptions, obituaries, and historical essays. Authoritative compiled genealogies have been the centerpiece of the Register for more than 150 years. Thousands of New England families have been treated in the pages of the journal and many more are referenced in incidental ways throughout. The articles in the Register range from short pieces correcting errors in print or solving unusual problems to larger treatments that reveal family origins or present multiple generations of a family. Look for details on how to obtain free access to the Register in a special eNews bulletin to be sent out Wednesday, November 24. A link will also be available on that date on the home page of our website, www.NewEnglandAncestors.org.

    1. Gen. Thomas Hinds of MIssissippi
    2. Nan & George Wolf
    3. Hi: I spotted this mention of Gen. Thomas Hinds while researching early Arkansas. The entire article can be found at the website below. I am putting just a few paragraphs below. We have other messages concerning Gen. Hinds in our archive so thought I would add this to the group. Regards Nan 71532.734@compuserve.com ======================================= Found at: http://www.tc.umn.edu/~mboucher/mikebouchweb/choctaw/chotreat.htm Two things became apparent within a month after Andrew Jackson's triumphant inducement of the Choctaws to sign the Treaty of Doaks Stand. First, in pressing for an advantage over the Choctaws, the United States government had ceded the Choctaws more than one third of the land already claimed by the Territory of Arkansas. Second, the vast majority of the Choctaws had no intention of leaving their traditional homeland in Mississippi although their holdings had been reduced to a mere 10,432,130 acres. When the government of the Territory of Arkansas learned that the Choctaws now owned practically half of their territory, they immediately raised a howl demanding that the treaty be rescinded. But, Calhoun, intent on his plan, was already urging William Ward, his agent to the Choctaws, to get the Choctaws off the land they had ceded to the United States under the treaty headed west. When Ward reported no luck, he was replaced with Edmund Fulsom, who had just about as much success as did Ward. In 1822, Calhoun slacked off his removal effort to cool the rising boundary dispute between the United States and the Territory of Arkansas concerning lands ceded to the Choctaws. In January of 1823, Calhoun delegated Gen. Thomas Hinds of Mississippi and William Woodward of Arkansas Territory to go into the Choctaw Nation and convince the chiefs that the boundary should be negotiated. They failed. However, the Choctaw chiefs, by this time tired of the bickering, were at least willing to talk about it, and offered to send a delegation to Washington, D. C. to at least discuss the boundary problem.

    1. W. E. Hinds author of book on boll weevil
    2. Nan & George Wolf
    3. Hi: Spotted while browsing. I may have sent this before. Regards Nan 71532.734@compuserve.com =========================== Found at: http://www.tsha.utexas.edu/handbook/online/articles/view/HH/fhu53.html (It mentions a W. E. Hinds, co-author of a book on boll weevels) HUNTER, WALTER DAVID (1875-1925). Walter David Hunter, entomologist, was born on December 14, 1875, in Lincoln, Nebraska. He was a pioneering expert on the boll weevil and pink bollwormqqv and an authority on medical and veterinary entomology, insect taxonomy, and biology and control of grasshoppers and other insects. He received B.A. (1895) and M.A. (1897) degrees from the University of Nebraska. After additional work at the University of Nebraska and Iowa State College he was employed in 1901 as a special field agent of the United States Department of Agriculture to conduct research on the boll weevil. Hunter came to Texas in 1901 and set out to learn as much as possible about the boll weevil. In 1902 a Department of Agriculture laboratory was established at Victoria, and Hunter was placed in charge. He staffed the laboratory with competent researchers. Results of the first two years of work were published as a USDA bulletin. This publication, written by Hunter and W. E. Hinds, is still considered to be the most important basic work on the life history and habits of the boll weevil. The boll weevil laboratory was moved to Dallas in 1905, and Hunter's work was broadened to cover other pests. He and his associates were responsible for many useful recommendations on crop and animal pests. After the laboratory was again moved in 1909, following the boll weevil eastward into Louisiana, Hunter became more involved in administrative work. He and his family moved to Washington, D.C., where they lived for several years while he worked for the agriculture department. In 1917 he was transferred back to Texas, where he was put in charge of attempts to eradicate the pink bollworm. This demanding work may have contributed to Hunter's sudden death. According to Charles N. Gould,qv a friend of Hunter from the University of Nebraska days, Hunter was "a soldier of science who gave his life in the line of duty." Hunter's scientific abilities were well recognized. During his relatively short life he authored or coauthored more than 100 publications on a broad array of insects and ticks. He was president of the American Association of Economic Entomologists in 1912 and of the Entomological Society of Washington in 1915. He was awarded an honorary doctorate by Tulane University for his contributions to agriculture. He married Mary P. Smith of Victoria in 1905, and they had one daughter. Hunter died while he was on a business trip in El Paso, on October 13, 1925. BIBLIOGRAPHY: Dallas Morning News, April 11, 1942. Charles N. Also, a lot of gratitude goes to Paul Webb, an archeologist in Durham, NC, who recently came out of the blue with another record book of original and transcribed Hinds Valley minutes. These were handed down from his grandmother Nora Collins Webb (1881-1975), who lived on No Pone Valley Road in Meigs County. He has willingly performed many look-ups to fill in gaps in the compilers originals. His minutes, which extend much further than those of this compiler, have also solved two mysteries: the connection between the Bullock Pen and the Hinds Valley churches (see page 28 "name changed...) and the discovery of the date that Hinds Valley church disbanded (1924). Thanks to Paul, these minutes were put on microfilm (#1046 at the State Library and Archives in Nashville, Tennessee). Mr. and Mrs. James Hinds, the only Hinds family still remaining in Hinds Valley, invited me into their lovely home, which overlooks the Hinds Valley Cemetery and the Church site, and provided valuable historical information. Julie Cromwell deserves many acknowledgements for the wonderful job she does with the Morgan County webpage. Thanks for putting these minutes on line, Julie. Also, thanks to my son Jim Syler, who helped critique some of the material, and was my ftp trouble-shooter; to my brother Stanley Davidson, who thrashed through the woods helping me look for the sites of the old Hinds Valley and Crab Orchard Creek churches; my nephew Craig Davidson, who spurred me on in learning to put these minutes on the web; to my brothers Johnny, M. T., and Wesley Davidson for (respectively) computer and web assistance, helpful advice when requested, and some preliminary scanning and formatting; to Dr. K.K. Collins, Professor,Department of English, Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, Illinois, for additional advice; and to all of the above for their valuable encouragement throughout this long and tedious project.

During these periods of time, there were country-wide divisions among Baptists, to which this possible split at Bullock Pen may or may not have been connected: 1)the church met at John Hinds in the middle of the summer (only winter meetings were usually held there); 2) the number of members was presented to their association; 3) Rules of Decorum were formed for the church (in July 1829), 4) and then about a year later adopted a Confession of Faith; 5) William Kirk was ordained to "pastoral charge” (in November 1829), his letter of dismission granted the following month, then two months later, "Bro. Stuart” was appointed as pastor; 6)"the church” moved into "Hindes Valley Meeting House” apparently in June 1833, having met at John Hinds "until a new meetin [house] can be built” (see Mar. 1830). The church continued to be referred to in the minutes as Bullock Pen through February 1833, then in the 2nd Saturday meeting in March 1833, the name was changed to "Hindses Valley” and the beginning of the April 1833 entry read, "The United Baptist Church of Christ at Hindes Valley Meeting House.” The church had also reorganized in 1820 at the beginning of these minutes. This may have been the reason Hinds Valley did not claim the minutes of Bullock Pen church before 1820 (even though the Bullock Pen church existed at least as early as 1812.]] Robert Walker was no longer clerk after March 14, 1828, but there is evidence that his death occurred within months afterward, so this apparently had nothing to do with a possible division in the church. William Kirk served in Brother Walkers place beginning in July 1829, and in the August 8, 1829 meeting "Brother Magors” is asked to get the church book and papers at "the house of Robert Wakers Seceased.” This is definitely an "S” instead of a "d” as in "deceased,”but a 3rd- great granddaughter of Robert Walker, Alison Agins, believes that he did die sometime near this time. Alison says, "He wrote his will June 27, 1829....they got the records [[at the courthouse]] Aug 1829 and the will went to court Nov 1829." 1829, 8th AUGUS the church met and after worship proceaded to Business1stopend a door for Reception of membersand Received Robert S. 1. Paul Hinds book
    2. Elaine Sturdevant
    3. Good morning listers, A few years ago I heard about a book that had been written by Paul Hinds. It was supposedly about the HINDS family history. I'm wondering if anybody might have a copy of that book and, if so, if I could get a copy. Unfortunately, I believe Paul passed away a few years ago so I can't get a copy from him. Thanks for your help. Elaine Sturdevant
