    1. RE: [HINDS] Draper Manuscripts

    3. Don asked: >What are the Draper Manuscripts? < Hi All: I don't have the dates but somewhere in the late 1700s or early 1800s a man named Draper decided that a lot of history was being lost as the Rev. War veterans were dying. So, he took it upon himself to travel around and interview the older citizens about their Rev. War experiences. He interviewed former military men and also their families. Unfortunately, as of about five years ago very few of the handwritten papers had been indexed. The papers are divided into sections - I am unfamiliar with the divisions. The Draper interviews that I have run across are very interesting and give quite a taste of what life was life during the Rev. War. I once ran across a Draper interview of a Mrs. Hinds but she was actually interviewed about her first husband's war effort and her life during the Rev. War. She had married a Hinds after the war so she had nothing to say about who he was. Does anyone know if they have been indexed or are being indexed? Regards Nan 71532.734@compuserve.com

    3. Don, Everyone on the list would be well advised to search on the web concerning the "Draper Manuscripts" or "The Draper Papers" to see if they are of interest to them. Simply go to Yahoo and do a search. Include the text "Draper Manuscripts" or "Draper Papers" in quotations to exclude all the other garbage and see what comes up. You may be surprised. The spelling of our surname changed in the late 1800s from Hinds to Hines for no apparent reason and with no explanation passed down. My ancestors originally moved into Wayne County circa 1800 and within 15 to 20 years many had died and others moved west. My direct ancestor Stephen Hinds moved north to Madison County KY near Boonesborough and later to southeastern Pulaski County near his old Wayne County home. 1. Fw: Urinals
    2. Calvin
    3. A group of second, third, and fourth graders, accompanied by two female teachers, went on a field trip to Churchill Downs, the local race track, to see and learn about thoroughbred horses. When it was time to take the children to the bathroom, it was decided that the girls would go with one teacher and the boys would go with the other. The teacher assigned to the boys was waiting outside the men's room when one of the boys came out and told her than none of them could reach the urinal. Having no choice, she went inside, helped the boys with their pants, and began hoisting the boys up, one by one, holding onto their "wee-wees" to direct the flow away from their clothes. As she lifted one, she couldn't help but notice that he was unusually well endowed. Trying not to show that she was staring, the teacher said, "You must be in the fourth grade." "No, ma'am," he replied. "I'm the jockey riding Silver Arrow in the seventh."

Kerchner, Jr., has published a new dictionary that is going to remain on my bookshelf, within arm's reach, for a long time. I am still in "learning mode" when it comes to DNA and genetics, and I suspect I'll be referring to this dictionary often as I become more and more immersed in the topic As you might expect, the Genetic Genealogy DNA Testing Dictionary contains definitions of words, terms, acronyms, and abbreviations found in genetics. It also serves as a pronunciation guide. What surprised me, however, was the number of drawings. The dictionary contains drawings of the Nuclear DNA Structure, a Double Helix Structure of a DNA molecule, a pictorial of DNA containing Organelles in a human cell (and the word "Organelles" is also explained), a male Karyotype Diagram, and more. I won't say this is an "easy to read" book. Indeed, I struggled for a bit with "Deduced Ancestral Haplotype" and "Tetra-Nucleotide Repeat." However, Mr. Kerchner translates those terms nearly to layman's English. This slim spiral-bound booklet serves to reduce the mystique surrounding all the new buzzwords found in DNA. You can even see a few pages of this dictionary on Kerchner's web site. That will give you an excellent preview of the typical entries found within this dictionary. Charles F. Kerchner, Jr.'s Genetic Genealogy DNA Testing Dictionary is a great resource for beginners in DNA testing. The better understanding of this topic should be a useful complement to traditional genealogical research. For more information about the Genetic Genealogy DNA Testing Dictionary, to see the sample pages, or to safely order the dictionary via PayPal's safe and secure system, go to http://www.kerchner.com/books/ggdictionary.htm. I came across a message posted on the Ancestry.com message boards for Hinds from 2002. This is the email address displayed. The reason I am contacting you is your ancestor Joseph Hinds (born Sudbury 1823). He is an ancestor of my fiance Michael Hinds also, his great-great-great-grandfather. 3. Dear Bill, Thank you for your kind offer of assistance in finding my father's grave but I have already managed to get a record of his burial. I knew that he was buried in the American Cemetery at Cambridge, England and had visited his grave. However, when I wanted to get a written record of his war service, I found that the Army did not even know that he existed. According to them, all the records burned at Saint Louis some years ago. I finally managed to get a record of his burial from the American Battle Monuments Commission, who also sent me a picture of the cemetery and of his grave. They sent me his name, rank and serial number, the place where he entered the service and the division of the army to which he was assigned on the date of his death. I was never able to get a record of his service, although he served in two world wars. Even to get this much, I had to file a formal Freedom of Information Act Request. This, to me, was most unfortunate. I am glad to see that the Veteran's Administration is now making information about our veterans more easily accessible. I hope that this new list helps others find their loved ones. Barbara

    3. Barbara, what was your father's name? I will keep my eye out for him. Btw, I found a memorial in Hawaii for my long lost brother who was lost at sea (Pacific Ocean). Bill -----Original Message----- From: Barbara Finney [mailto:bf2@swbell.net] Sent: Tuesday, February 15, 2005 9:46 AM To: HINDS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [HINDS] Graves of Veterans and Family Members The Veteran's Administration has now gone on line with a list of grave sites in the US for veterans. I found 223 graves for men and women named Hinds on this list. Unfortunately, it does not include overseas cemeteries so my father's grave is not listed. See http://www.cem.va.gov/ Barbara
