This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Hinds, Wing, Stanford, Bennett Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/EKj.2ACIB/366 Message Board Post: My ancestor is Sophia/Sophie Hinds, b 1797 in Barre, Worcester, MA of Jesse Hinds, who was son of Corlis Hinds. Jesse Hinds and family moved about 1805 to Chesterfield, Cheshire, NH where Sophie Hinds later married Caleb Bennett and they eventually settled in PA. Sophie Hinds' mother has been identified as Sarah Stanford by Randall's Chesterfield and Hinds Family. But Jesse Hinds and Sarah Stanford did not marry until Dec 1800, with Jesse about age 36. A marriage between a Jesse Hinds and Martha Wing is recorded in Barre, MA on 19-Feb-1784 when my Jesse was 20. Jesse Hinds in shown in the 1800 Census in Worcester county with 1 adult male, 1 adult female, 2 females under 10. Both of the above sources admit to less than rigourous genealogical study - instead being primarily collections of family and town stories of the time. So, was Jesse Hinds son of Corlis Hinds of Barre MA previously married to Martha Wing with whom he had children, one being Sophie Hinds? Has Sophie's mother been misidentified as her stepmother? And where was Jesse and family in the 1790 Census? Any information about this family would be appreciated. I can reciprocate about the later generations. (Interestingly, to me, my father, my mother, and my husband all descend from various children of George Corliss and Joanna Davis.)

Hi: Ancestry.com now has the records of the NY Immigrant Bank online at: http://content.ancestry.com/iexec/Default.aspx?htx=List&dbid=8760 There are quite a few Hinds listed: NEW YORK EMIGRANT SAVINGS BANK, 1850-1883 The Emigrant Savings Bank was established in 1850 by members of the Irish Emigrant Society. The bank ended up serving thousands of Irish immigrants who fled to America following the infamous Potato Famine. The bank kept many volumes of records including an Index Book; a Test Book; a Transfer, Signature, and Test Book; and a Deposit-Account Ledger. This database is an index to these records providing the given name and surname of the depositor, their account number, account date, and year and place of birth, if given. In addition, each indexed individual is linked to the image on which they appear where more information may be available. While the majority of the emigrants found in this collection will be Irish, you may occasionally find emigrants of other nationalities as well. Index Book: The bank kept an index of all individuals recorded in their volumes. This book will usually provide the name of the depositor, the date of the record, and the individual's account number. This book will also refer you to a Test Book or a Transfer, Signature, and Test Book. Test Books: The Test Books cover the years 1850-68 and contain a variety of details about the depositor and his family. Information that may be found in this set of records includes the date of the record, the name of the depositor, his account number, occupation, residence, and other remarks, which could include names of other family members, immigration information, or birth or residence information in Ireland. Transfer, Signature, and Test Books: These books existed from 1850-83 and were used primarily for recording changes made to an individual's account information. Examples of such a change could be a new signature, a change in address, or a change in the account holder. Information that may be found in this set of records includes the signature of the account holder, the date of the record, the account number, the individual's residence, occupation, year born, birthplace, and family relations. Deposit-Account Ledger: These records are arranged by account number and contain an account history for each individual, recording typical transactions such as deposits and withdrawals. Hi: I am posting below a list of orphans who were assigned to various Hines, Hinds in a book about Apprentices in TN. I am posting some not because they are connected with the names Hinds but are connected to one another as orphaned siblings. The Bond children (below) were half orphans - their mother Jane Beeson Bond had died. The daughter, Elizabeth Bond, is my direct and she actually had three guardians before she was old enough to marry an Edward Mattix. The Bonds were Quakers but we have found no indication that the Hinds families in this area were Quakers. But, the Hinds were chosen as guardians for Quaker children and as administrators of Quaker estates so they must have been 'well thought of'. How wonderful to have a list member with such a close connection to Scotland! Many of us on this list believe that we are descendants of Scots either directly or after a stop in Ireland before coming to America. I, for one, am just starting to learn about Scottish history and how to research Genealogy in Scotland. You may be the expert on the list about Scots. Please share with us anything that you learn about your ancestors. And do consider joining our DNA project. You just might find an exact match in our group.
