This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/EKj.2ACIB/369 Message Board Post: Hello I would like to know if anyone if familar with Walter Freeman Hinds or his wife Dovie Mae Hinds (?McAlpine). My Grandmother (Jesse Louise Hinds born in Pinebluff, Ark) on her dying bed admitted that she was half Comanche. I don't know which side of her parents was actually Native but my father had told me once that he thought it was on my great grandmothers side as they would refer to themselfs as "Black Dutch". I think Walter was born on Aug. 11th, 1882 in Alabama. Dovie, I think was born June 8th, 1887 in Pinebluff, Ark. Walter and Jesse both died in Ventura, CA. I am not sure about the Native heritage but am interested to find out more on my family roots. If anyone could help me it would greatly be appricated. Thank you.
NAN, Thanks for the information, I will followup. Bill
Barbara & Bill: I am pasting below several items found at google for "Fort Lawrence". =========================== Found at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~gataylor/forts.htm Forts Along the Federal Road The location of the Forts along the Federal Road played a significant role in the location of communities we know today. Bill: There have been previous conversations about William Singleton Hinds on this list. I suggest that you search our archives at: http://searches2.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl?list=HINDS-L I would use quotes: "William Singleton" to narrow it down to just that name. Regards Nan 71532.734@compuserve.com
Bill: Great info for our archives and you definitely have cousins on this present list. One correction needed: Arkansas is not AK - that is Alaska. Arkansas is AR - not Arizona as some think - that is AZ. I am afraid that I have lost touch with the three Guerin researchers that I have come across over the years - they have changed their addresses - drat. I will give you their names in a private message if you are interested. Regards Nan 71532.734@compuserve.com ===================================
NAN, My grandmother was Helen Strude Hinds. The line that I have with factual or fairly reasonable documentation to support is as follows: Helen Strude Hinds (12/15/1875 - 8/2/1962) William Singleton Hinds (1/26/1828 - 1/25/1923) Benjamin Hinds (1788 - 11/30/1829) Levi Monroe Hinds (1767 - 9/11/1842) Joseph Hinds (6/17/1735 - 7/18/1814) The extended line with limited or no documentation: Joseph Hinds (1705 - 1771) James Hinds (Bef. 1680 - Bef 10/26/1731) James Hinds (12/27/1647 - 2/24/1717/18) James Hinds (Bef. 1618 - Bet. 1653/1655) I have also documented the Byram Family from Huldah Byram (wife of William Singleton Hinds) back to the Mayflower Pilgrim, John Alden. I am also looking for documentation supporting relationships to the surnames: Shaw, Mason, Longbotham, Best, Bustard, Fox, Mullins, Allen, Edson, Hayward, Towne, Mitchell, Cooke Alden, Guerin, Childress, Remsden, Howarad, Pew, Farmer, Linsay, Carter, Webster, and Cavness. I am particularly interested in the story of Benjamin Jefferson Hinds and his wife Mary Ann Childress (Polly). The information I have indicates that they were married in Tennessee on 10/17/1809 and then left or followed his family to Alabama where they lived until at least 1828, when William Singleton and his sister Margaret Ann were born. Sometime before or just after their birth, Benjamin moved to Fort Lawrence, AK, near Hot Springs. He died there on Nov. 30, 1829. No record exists to explain whether he went alone or took part or all of his family with him. Records indicate that many of the children lived and died in Arkansas or Texas. A fragment from the 1830 Census (http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ar/washington/census/1830/wash1830.txt) lists as follows: Karyann? Hines w/m under 5 years =1 w/m 05-10 years =1 w/m 10-20 years =2 w/m 15-20 years =2 w/f under 5 years =1 w/f 05-10 years =2 w/f 40-50 years =1 This entry very closely fits the family of Polly Childress Hinds following the death of Benjamin. I would appreciate any information about this family during the period between 1827 and 1840 including verification of Polly's burial at Red Hill Cemetery in Marshall, AL, between 1833 and 1834. I know you just asked a simple question - sorry for the long and complecated answer. Thanks for your interest, Bill
Dear Bill, As far as I know, the only proof that any of us has that Joseph Hinds was the son of Joseph Hinds of Mendham, New Jersey, is a page out of a pocket notebook owned by John Hinds which listed the children of Joseph and Ruth. This was apparently written after both Joseph and Ruth were dead and may have been intended to establish that the children were born into a Quaker family. If you do not have this document, contact me privately and I will send you a copy. I, for one, do not believe that Joseph was a descendant of James of Salem and invite you to join us in searching for proof of his ancestry. I join you in your confusion about Fort Lawrence, Arkansas near Hot Springs. I could find no such place and finally concluded that it was in Indian Territory. Such a place existed supposedly in Oklahoma but it may have been across the border in Arkansas. Perhaps that is where the records are that you have been unable to find. Good luck! Barbara

Hi: As I was searching for a certain John Hinds/Hines in KY I thought I might as well share the ones in Wayne Co. KY that lived there in 1850. I wish I was looking for a Ragetta or Zrannah or Kizrah instead of John. And, there wasn't a single Hines of any given name in the county.
