    1. Got any help?
    2. Nan & George Wolf
    3. Hi: A very kind lady looked up Hinds in the History of Crawford Co. AR by Clara B. Eno: Here are her entries. - -------------------------------------------------------------- Nan: I have the book you mentioned by Clara B. Eno. I looked in the index and it shows: Hinds/Hins/Hines/Hynes Caster pg.48 David 47 John 47/48 Jack 259 Margaret Ann 47 Phillis 46 Thomas 46 I looked at the pages and found the following. LIST OF EARLY SETTLERS AS THEIR NAME APPEAR ON DEEDS pg. 46 Thomas Hinds and wife Phillis. (Anyone know anything about these two?) pg 47 John Hinds of Kentucky and Jonathan Eppler and Esther Eppler and Margret Ann Hinds, heirs at law of David Hinds (This is regards to David's death in Dec. 1838. David had a minor son so this John of KY probably means John born in KY to differentiate him from John the son. He may be a brother of David. David's mother, widow Esther Hinds had re-married to a Jonathan Eppler so evidently the step-father had to be mentioned as the male in the family. Would love to hear from anyone connected to this John HInds mentioned in David's will. Could he be the John HInds living down the road from Widow Esther Hinds in the 1850 Crawford census? Is he the John HInds who later records some of John Sr.'s land in 1839 after John Sr. died in 1838? David also recorded some of this land. This is the same land that an unknown Albert Hinds records in 1889 - many, many years later) . pg 48 William Pierce and wife Caroline Dorinda and John and wife Caster Hins to William Capps (Caster is Nan's ESTHER, wife of John, mother of David. David's wife, Marg. Mattix had a sister Cynthia who married a Nimrod Capps who was David's administrator. Who is William Capps? Who are Wm. and Caroline Pierce?) page 259 Jack Hines was on the roster of Company G 22nd Arkansas Regiment during the Civil War (Anyone know who he is or his ancestors? Guess I'll have to send for his record. Does this mean a Union regiment?) Regards, Nan Wolf [email protected]

Story goes, that Nancy Cook married Asa Hinds/Hines in Tn..they settled on land granted his father for Rev. War svc. from N.C. They came into Missouri, (don't have a clue why )and one of Asa's brothers, Levi was found in N. Arkansas. 3. Dear Nan, Glad to have you as administratrix. I have one little item to pass on. I secured a copy of the will of the Joseph Hinds who died in 1772 and learned that the five shillings that he gave to his son, Joseph was in proclamation money. Apparently the information that you found some where was correct. Joseph, Jr. had returned to England. Now if we could just find out where in England he went! Regards, Barbara

    2. Hi, Our Hinds family was from New York in the Clinton, Essex and Franklin County areas mostly. What I am hoping to find someday, is, what our gr. gr. grandmother's maiden name was. On the census forms she is listed as Mariah [and on one as Amelia A.] wife of John born 1802 in New Jersey. Mariah was born about 1807, and some of the names that we are suspicious of are Hayes, Emerson and Drown. Does anyone know of a Mariah that goes in their family from born about 1807 in Clinton County, New York? I keep hoping and hoping. Donna

    1. Hinds in early probate of Lawrence Co. AR
    2. Nan & George Wolf
    3. Hi: Some kind soul just sent these entries to me from Lawrence Co. AR. I think you Hinds researchers have all seen these before but just in case........................ I am sending them to both the Hinds egroup list and the Hinds-L list in the hopes that one of you is a William Hinds researcher. I would swear that in a Crawford Co. History book (possibly by Clara Eno) there is an undated entry in the Early Settlers section of the book - about a William Hinds dying leaving three minor children. If this is so - then this William Hinds was in Crawford AND Lawrence Co. - the same as our John Hinds and his son, David. Am I mixing up a Crawford book with a Lawrence Co. book? I really don't think so. If anyone knows anything about William Hinds and his brood - please fill me in. Regards, Nan Wolf [email protected] - --------------------------------------- From the "Lawrence County, Arkansas Loose Probate Papers: 1815 - 1890", the only mention of John Hinds is on page 109: MANSON, Rebecca Gdn.: 1 Oct. 1832, this over age 14 minor, an orphan of Sinclair Manson, chose John Hinds as her guardian. on page 64 there is this for HINES/HINDS: HINES/HINDS, Ellen and Benjamin F. (minors) Gdn.: 1866, Carney G. Straughan gdn. of these minor heirs of William Hinds, dec'd. Gdn: 1868, Jeffery A. Phillips gdn. of Benjamin Hines (sic.), minor. 3. Dear Gord, Thanks for sharing your research with us. Perhaps some of the information that I have gained from estate proceedings will help in solving the mystery. I secured such filings as the State of New Jersey could locate on four Hinds estate. they show the following facts: Hinds, James died intestate in 1709. His widow Anne was appointed Administratrix. She and Edward Spinning posted a bond for what appears to be 200 pounds. The copy is very poor and that is a lot of money for that time period but that is what the figure appears to be. (Note: Anne is a family name in the Spinning family. James Hinds who died in 1731 named John Spinning as one of his executors.) Hinds, Joseph died intestate in 1709. He was killed accidentally when his cart overturned. He was survived by his widow Anne and eight young children. His widow, Anne, was appointed Administratrix. The inventory listed assets worth 46 pounds. Hinds, James died intestate in 1719. Administration was granted to his son James Hinds. His widow, Catherine, granted her dower to her stepson James Hinds. The estate was valued at 14 pounds. Hinds, James died testate in 1731. He had been operating a loan office. No mention is made of a wife. He left personal property to his daughters and personal property and land to his sons James, John and Joseph. He directed his sons James and John to help Joseph build a house on "the said land that I gave to my son Joseph." He directed that his sons John and Joseph should not sell the land that he devised to them until they reached the age of 26 years. One of the pieces of land that he left to Joseph was a six acre tract of meadow. Hinds, Joseph died testate in 1766. I did not order this estate but the abstract of the will the the New Jersey Calendar of Wills states that Joseph devised to his son William, six acres of salt meadow that had been devised to Joseph by his father. I would welcome any suggestions, comments or further information that any on the list may have. Barbara

    3. Hi Eileen, Barbara and the list -- I really must apologize for writing what, in hindsight (unintended pun), was a poorly crafted reply to Eileen's query. It really became clear to me when I tried to send Barbara a simple, short answer to her Q about ancestors of Corlis HINDS b1724. As might be expected, one does not exist -- a short, simple answer, that is. [See Barbara's off-list question to me included at the end of this message.] There are several sources that I've looked at. All appear to agree on the ancestry back to John HINDS (1639-1720). Further back in time before him, there are at least three different opinions(?) on the ancestry of John HINDS (1639-1720). I mentioned only two in my reply to Eileen and the HINDS-L list. [ref: Subject: Re: James HINDS / HOYNES Date: Thu, 09 Mar 2000 14:42:06 -0600] In the course of the several hours (with interruptions) that I wrote that original response to Eileen, I forgot to include the LDS on-line Ancestral File as a further source. Had I done so, I'd have composed a quite different reply.... more like this one. Basically, John HINDS (1639-1720) can be found with three possible ancestries: (1) His father as James HINDS (b Bef 1618) is found starting at http://www.rootsweb.com/~maworces/d613.htm#P603 There is no ancestry for James HINDS given. [sources in this www compilation are in bracketed superscript numbers - just click on them to view the list of sources] This descendancy contains 3 Corlis HINDS -- b 1724, b 1748 and b 1774. NOTE: I have discovered many additional persons in the HINDS lineage who are not shown in this data compiled by Betty Thomas -- she has not updated the www pages since approx. 1997 (per email dialog with me in 1999). I am in contact with several others with connections to this same HINDS line. (2) His father as James HINDS/ HOYNES b 1613 [whose father is Thomas HINDS] This is from the LDS on-line Ancestral File (custom search) at http://www.familysearch.org/Search/searchaf.asp Simply enter < corlis hinds > and then look at the _Pedigree_ (several pages) for Corlis HINDS b 1724 (AFN: N8BK-34). It is in the LDS AF that, in fact, I HAD previously seen the HOYNES surname variant for James HINDS!!... and I further realized that his father is shown as Thomas HINDS (b: < 1587) of Southold NJ (sic!!) [which I had not yet entered into my FTM database] -- NOTE that NJ is where Barbara's Joseph HINDS was born!! [See #4 below, also.] Anyone interested in this area of research (I am not, as yet) you can check the names & addresses of ALL submitters to the AF... there are many(!) for James HINDS but only one of them for Thomas HINDS (3) His father is Samuel HINDS (b abt 1593). This is found at the site http://www.omegatower.com/shook/html/surnames.html I was incorrect when I said in posting my to Eileen that the one reference to "Samuel HINDS as the father of James HINDS" can be found via the "shook" url above. In fact, it is an LDS Ancestral File (see #4 below) In fact, this SHOOK researcher does not show James HINDS at all. Instead, he only shows Samuel HINDS as the father of the same John HINDS (1639-1720). This researcher has a very "narrow" HINDS interest, since his names index has only four HINDS: John HINDS (1683 - 1747) John HINDS (1639 - 1720) Samuel HINDS (ABT 1593 - ____) Tryphena HINDS (1728 - 1820) (4) [NOTE: This line does NOT lead to Corlis HINDS (as far as I'm aware)] For another look at Samuel HINDS> James HINDS, again go to the LDS AF custom search site at http://www.familysearch.org/Search/searchaf.asp and enter < samuel hinds > and go to this one in the list 71. Samuel HINDS - Ancestral File (AFN: C9KZ-CM) Gender: M Birth/Christening: Abt 1591 , , England Here you will find Joseph HINDES listed as a son of James: Joseph HINDES (AFN:3LWZ-65) Born: 11 Jun 1647 Place: Southold, Suffolk, England Died: 19 Mar 1718-20 Place: Elizabeth, Essex, New Jersey I've no idea how close this place is to your Joseph HINDS birthplace of Mendham NJ -- but the proximity/timing and his name are intriguing. I hope this improves upon my earlier reply. // Regards, Gord HINES (in Regina SK Canada) ps: To remain comprehensive in this email, I should reiterate about the HINDS book, below, as a further source for this family. I have seen only a few photocopied pages dealing with Corlis HINDS b 1774 and a few of his siblings and therefore cannot as yet commend it in any specific way. Albert Henry Hinds: History and Genealogy of the Hinds Family, 1899 which can be found in many libraries and I believe is available on m/f from the LDS. This book is also available in a facsimile edition: History & genealogy of the Hinds family, by A. Hinds. 394p. 1899. $61.00 above from www on 18 Oct 1999 and again on 8 March 2000, listed at http://www.higginsonbooks.com/h.htm#hil <><><><><><><> POSTSCRIPT <><><><><><><> As a postscript to the reply I've written above, and as a preamble to what follows below, I should state that my principal focus has revolved around the children of Corlis HINDS b 1774. I do not, as yet, even have a confirmed connection to this HINDS line. I have been unable to date to locate the parents (& siblings, if any) of my gg gf, Henry Harrison HINES (possibly HINDS), who was b 1817 in Watertown NY. I am still in the process of investigating "... every Hinds, Hines, Haynes or Haines that I can find who was in [Jefferson Co NY & New England before 1850]" to use Barbara's description [see Barbara's off-list email to me, below]. In fact, I've had considerable "success" in one regard. For I have learned that at some time in the period 1801 to 1850, 4 of the 5 sons of Corlis HINDS (b 1774 MA) and Susannah HENRY lived in Jefferson Co NY: Corlis HINDS (arrived 1801), Thomas HINDS (arrived about 1812), [twin of Watson HINDS] Joseph Buckminster HINDS (possibly as early as 1813) and Jonas HINDS (possibly as early as 1835). It is also possible their sisters lived in JeffCo also, but I know nothing of their marriages, if any. I have only just add enough HINDS data into my FTM program from my www researches to keep my research results organized as I track down leads to find the parent of my gg gf. For this reason, sibling/descendant data in my chart below is incomplete. It is also the reason I have not made any effort to investigate the divergent parentage of John HINDS (1639-1720). The chart below is my own personal "amalgam" looking at "Corlis HINDS" as the direct lines of interest. It is drawn from a large number of mainly on-line sources. 3. Hi Eileen -- the family of James HINDS that you refer to in your note below, can be found on the www starting at http://www.rootsweb.com/~maworces/d613.htm#P603 I have not encountered the HINDS family surname spelled as "HOYNES" in any records I've seen to date (tho' I've seen HAYNES in this and another old HINDS line). HINES is the one variant spelling most frequently occurring in official/ census records. Where did you see HOYNES?? Many descendant branches from James HINDS are to be found on the web also. There is one that shows your James HINDS father as Samuel HINDS (not another James as your message suggested) which you can find via the surnames index at http://www.omegatower.com/shook/html/surnames.html Another site with this HINDS ancestry is at http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/r/i/c/Craig--Rice/GENE7-0046.html You can use the InterneTree on this site at http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/r/i/c/Craig--Rice/tree1.html to look at the pedigree chart for all the HINDS < home page is at http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/r/i/c/Craig--Rice/index.html > James HINDS in this tree is shown as James HAYNES I have no idea whatsoever about the sources of any of the HINDS data at the sites above.... so please don't ask me. I personally have much research on the males descendants of Corlis HINDS b 1748 MA (son of Corlis HINDS b 1724 -- the first to be given the Corlis forename). For published material, a great deal can be found in the HINDS book: Albert Henry Hinds, History and Genealogy of the Hinds Family, 1899 which can be found in many libraries and I believe is on m/f from the LDS. It is also available in a facsimile edition: History & genealogy of the Hinds family, by A. Hinds. 394p. 1899. $61.00 above from www on 18 Oct 1999 and again today 8 March 2000, listed at http://www.higginsonbooks.com/h.htm#hil A www search with Corlis HINDS will help you locate more materials on this family. There are at least 6 generations that each have a Corlis HINDS in the descendancy. I hope this gives you a start.... please contact me off the list for further details/ discussion. I would be most interested in whatever HINDS data you have. // Regards, Gord HINES (in Regina SK CA) Eileen F Ivory wrote: Subject: James HINDS / HOYNES Resent-Date: Mon, 6 Mar 2000 22:56:15 -0800 Resent-From: [email protected] Date: Mon, 6 Mar 2000 22:49:23 -0800 From: "Eileen F Ivory" <[email protected]> To: [email protected] > I am searching for James HINDS / HOYNES.
