After much research, I have concluded that William and Richard Haines of Dunstable, County Bedford who came over on the Griffin in 1634 were not brothers of James Hinds of Salem. A different man, William Hind, age 35 and Margaret Hinds, age 30 came over on the Poole of London on July 6, 1635. This man just possibly might be the ancestor of Ebenezer Hinds but I have no proof of it. Nothing that I have found connects him to Bedford or to James Hinds of Salem. The Gostwicke, Bedford, records do show the baptism of Richard Hynde, son of Thomas, on 3 Apr 1612. The Salem (US) records show that Richard and William Haines conveyed their 2/3rds interest in a tract of land on 29 Apr 1648. On 14 Nov 1647, William Haynes gave a letter of attorney to Thomas Haynes, merchant, London, for collection at Danes Halle, Bedforshire. This line has lots of clues but they help not at all in tracing the William Hind who came over on the Poole.

Quote from one of Lamb papers: The record compiled by Albert Henry Hinds (History and Genealogy of the Hinds Family)begins with James Hinds (Haines, Heynes, Haynes, Hindes) the emigrant who came to this country, probably from England, and landed in Salem, MA as early as 1637, when he was admitted as a freemen. The record continues with the historyof the descendants of the fifth child, James Hinds, Jr., baptized or christened 27 Feb 1647/1648. Quote from the Albert Henry Hinds book: FIRST GENERATION 1. JAMES HINDS (Heynes,Haynes,Hindes) the emigrant, came to this country, probably fromEngland and landed in Salem, Mass., as early as 1637, when he was admitted as a freeman. He married in 1638, and at an early day removed to Southold, L.I., (Long Island) where he died in March1652-3, his estate being valued at 123 pounds, 5s. 4d. His widow was married in June 1656 to Ralph Dayton, of Southold. Benjamin Haines, who was at Southampton in 1639, and a resident of North Sea (Northampton) in 1657, was probably a brother to James. He was the grandfather of Stephen, who moved to Elizabeth, N.J., as early as 1725, and was probably the ancestor of Gov. Daniel Haines. The following is communicated by A. M. Haines, Esq., of Galena, Ill., to the "New England Historical and Genealogical Register" in 1883: "James Haines removed from Salem., Mass., to Southold, L.I., about 1651-2, and was a cooper by profession. He is described in a deed made Aug. 7, 1660, as "James Haynes, late of Salem, in the county of Essex," (end of quote to NE Register) "We have failed to trace the first James Hindes or Haines beyond Salem, but he undoubtedly came from Salem. " The following is the will of James Hinds, which was made March 1, 1652: "I, James Haynes being weake in bodie, but by divine Providence in p'fect memorie do make this my last will and testament: "Impris. Just obtained the book "Loyalists in the Southern Campaign of the Revolutionary War" by Murtie Jane Clark pub., by the Genealogical Publishing Co. 1981, Baltimore. Keep in mind that 1/3 of the colonists were Patriots, 1/3 Loyalists and the other third were "whichever way the wind was blowing." There is also the fact that the English conscripted (drafted) colonists whenever they felt the need. From the locations where this company shows up in the book - one can see that the English were fighting the Spaniards in Florida as well as the American colonists to the north. I know where Pensacola is but have no idea where Newtown, Yellow Hook and Guana are located. And, since this group was from PA - the location of: Banks of Skulkyll is probably where they were mustered in. NOTE: Joseph Hains (could be a Hinds or Hines) was killed 8 May 1880 fighting the Spanianards. - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Page 133: Muster Roll of Captain Joseph Swift's Company of the First Battalion, Pennsylvania Loyalists, Commanded by Lieut Colonel William Allen, April 24, 1779. Trying to find some confirmation of the origins of William HAINES (Hinds) who is recorded as emigrating to America as a passenger on the Paule of London at age 35, settled in Salem (or vicinity) and was made a freeman in 1635. It appears that this is the same year in which he settled there, which would make his DOB Abt. 1600. Joined the Church in Salem in 1649. (Albert Henry Hinds, History and Genealogy of the Hinds Family, 1899. It is also recorded in LDS file familyid=4485047) Albert Henry Hinds shows Williams birthplace as Dunstable in Bedfordshire, and suggests his probable father to be Walter Haines, and his mother Mary Wotford. His children's birth dates from the LDS file are William 1657, Richard 1652, Sarah 1647, Thomas 1645, Jonathan 4/11/1648. Dick Chase
Hi: The Ancestry.com newsletter yesterday said that a new database had arrived. So, I copied the 20 Hinds marriages below. There were 211 Hines marriages - too many for a message. Hi: Since I once found my John Hinds in an AR list of Territorial Legislators as John Haines - I try to send along any Haines or Haynes that I run across - just in case it is one that you Hinds researchers are looking for. Keep in mind that only the ones in need applied for pension help. It could be the soldier himself or his heirs that need the help.this is from a list of applications denied. Hi: There is a Benjamin Hines in the list below. Also interesting to the Hinds line that connected with the Edward Mattix/Eliz Bond (Quaker) line - there are surnames that married Mattix/Bond children - West - Crowley - Mathis (Mattix?)and Roberson. Do any of you connect to this Benjamin Hines? Am also sending this to the Mattix-L list. Hi: Still preparing for our trip in Oct. to NC Do any of you know about these three Hines that served in the Rev. War? I think you all know that "do" means ditto - that is why I put Sanders Hodges on the list. Does the fact that the monies were paid out to Burwel Moring mean that they served under him or was he the paymaster for a large group? Any opinions appreciated. If any of you also belong to the Hines-L group - feel free to pass this message along. There were none spelled "Hinds" on the list. To the listmembers of both Hinds-L and Hinds egroup mail lists: Clif Hinds wrote: >As far as the [email protected], I see no reason to close it if you want it to remain. If you are happy with the search mechanism. I changed my email address with egroups to [email protected] I can have that address in Germany. I will have a little trouble with the list, but I do not have to close it. What do you want?< A Hinds-L member wrote to Clif: Good for you! Who knows what will become of Rootsweb now that they have been purchased by Ancestry.com. Ancestry.com claims that they are going to leave Rootsweb alone but they are so obviously out for money that I fear they will start taking over the operation. A lot of people who have put many hours of volunteer work into Rootsweb projects are very upset about the merger and may have good cause to be so. -------------- SOOOOO- it looks like we will have two lists. I'll stick with Hinds-L now that I'm committed. But I want to offer the members of both lists the chance to post on both without having to belong to both. So, join one list - send the message to that list AND a cc: to me and I will send it to the OTHER list. I'll stay on both lists. Or you can join both lists - your choice. I will NOT be sending my "finds" to Clif's list anymore. No sense overloading both lists when I find Hinds items. But I would suggest that you "do" a search on both lists from time to time. I am going to send another month's worth of Hinds egroup messages to the Hinds-L list because they are not archived anywhere. They came down the pike before Clif requested they be archived. But, I'll give you a couple days rest. Clif has rec'd an offer from Rootsweb to link his egroup to the Rootsweb Genealogy Resources site "which is a well-known compilation of genealogy-related resources that includes mailing lists, newsgroups, Telnet, Gopher, WWW, and email. You can access the mailing list section of the site (over 20,000 entries) at http://www.rootsweb.com/~jfuller/gen_mail.html" They will send it to a couple of other sites including CyndisList so they can add the information to their web pages and will post the entry to the NEW-GENLIST mailing list to provide additional exposure. . The reason Hinds-L was started after Clif's list was up and going was because the egroup was hard to find and the founder of Hinds-L was not aware of Clif's list.. In actuality, Clif found most of us - through his own Hinds searches. That's how we joined his group. This Rootsweb link should make it easier to find. Feel free to join both lists. I will NOT be sending my "finds" to Clif's list anymore. No sense overloading both lists when I find Hinds items. But I would suggest that you "do" a search on both lists from time to time. Can't remember how to search the archives? Send a message to either list and we'll tell you the steps. Answers to Hinds-L do not have to be done privately - they just may help someone else if they are answered on the list. I'm sure Clif feels the same. As far as the [email protected], I see no reason to close it if you want it to remain. If you are happy with the search mechanism. I changed my email address with egroups to [email protected] I can have that address in Germany. I will have a little trouble with the list, but I do not have to close it. What do you want? [If the search was for "Nan" AND "Wolf", the result would also have been 247.] The question remains how long the eGroups archive will remain.... // Gord Hines (in Regina SK Canada)" ======================= Okay Hinds-L list members: As you can see I transferred last night some messages that are not in the egroup archives. I was ill for two months in 1999 and those messages were sitting in my inbasket. I was amazed to find them. Don't ask how many messages I have in my Inbasket - embarrassing. Okay - 1970 messages!!! BUT, I can delete every single message I sent last night knowing it can be searched at the archive later.. Clif requested the list be archived in March of 1999. So I have one more month to send the list that is not archived - then what? Barbara has noted that an egroups list is closed if unused. At Rootsweb - a list still functions even if it doesn't have an "on the list" administrator. It is noted as "Up For Adoption" and keeps functioning. What happens at egroups? As for searching - Rootsweb is evidently a lot easier because I have been using that search site for years and Gord just now figured out how to search the Hinds egroup list. Needless to say - I feel STUPID. Rootsweb has said that it will link the Hinds egroup to its Hinds search mechanism and will link it to Cyndi's also. But as Gord says: "The question remains how long the eGroups archive will remain...." Should we continue to move the info from that list to Hinds-L before its demise? Need your input please. After all you at Hinds-L are the ones that are getting bombarded with old messages . And, Cliff is PACKING!!! Regards, Nan Wolf [email protected]
Hi Hinds-L mail listers & Nan Let me start by stating that I think having a copy of the Hinds eGroup archive available on RootsWeb via the HINDS-L list archive is a great idea and a wise move to preserve the information and make it more widely available. I will admit that searching archives at eGroups is not as easy as at RootsWeb.... but the fact is that the Hinds eGroup list archive can be searched -- by key word or phrase (apparently, two or more words are taken as a phrase). With Clif's departure, what will become of the Hinds eGroup list archives? ps: We will miss you Clif!!! How is the Hinds eGroup archive searched, you ask? I'll take you thru the steps from the beginning.... 1. surf on over to the eGroups homepage at http://www.egroups.com/ OR, start at http://www.egroups.com/mygroups 2. Sign In NOTE: If you have forgotten your password, there is a link on the sign in page to click on -- they will email you a code that will enable you to reset your password to a new one. 3. Upon sign in, you are taken to your "My Groups" page. You will see the "Hinds" list underlined and highlighted -- i.e. it is a clickable link -- click on it. 4. This will take you to the main Hinds list page: There is a table of archived messages by month -- not too much use if you are getting the messages delivered individually or in digest form. DO NOT USE the search window box on this page for the HINDS list -- it searches ALL eGroups archives. 5. On the left side of the main Hinds page, is a menu list -- click on the "Messages" link. 6. You then arrive at a page with the latest 30 messages displayed by date. All messages (330+) can be viewed one by one, as Nan has already noted. You can also re-sort the entire list by THREAD. This may be useful for locating replies. 7. The SEARCH window box at the top of this list of messages should appear with the default choice of "This Archive" -- but a drop-down menu allows you to chose "All eGroups". THIS IS THE PLACE TO SEARCH THE HINDS ARCHIVE. I did several tests on the search capabilities -- NOTE: I did NOT use any quotes [shown below] around my search words. I searched for "Corlis Hinds" [an abiding interest of mine] -- and found three messages from Nan with his name in the body of the messages, and not in the subject line. I searched on my name "Gord Hines" and on "ghines" [part of my email address]. Both searches hit my one post, msg #320. Another search using "GVST" from the subject (& message body) of my post located both my post #320 AND Nan's original post (#309) that contained the term gvst. "Clif Hinds" got 70 hits [not all were written by him]. "Nan Wolf" got 27 hits but "Nan & George Wolf" got 247!! This difference makes it clear the search is done on a "phrase" basis. [If the search was for "Nan" AND "Wolf", the result would also have been 247.] The question remains how long the eGroups archive will remain.... // Gord Hines (in Regina SK Canada) Nan & George Wolf wrote: Subject: Transcribing info from anothe Hinds archive Resent-Date: Wed, 26 Jul 2000 12:38:44 -0700 Resent-From: [email protected] Date: Wed, 26 Jul 2000 15:38:09 -0400 From: Nan & George Wolf <[email protected]> To: [email protected] > Hinds-L mail list members: > WARNING <g> > > Clif Hinds the administrator of the Hinds list at egroup aka onelist.com is > leaving the country for three to five years.
