Hi: There are some interesting family letters concerning the Newport/Wollard family at: http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ifetch2?/u1/data/tn+index+298366778268 +F One of the letters is from Nathaniel and Margaret Wollard of Buffalo, Missouri, to Asa and Elizabeth Newport of Rhea County, TN., dated August 1, 1850. I'm pasting the bit below (not part of a letter) explaining about the people in this family. Note that Hannah Hinds,( who I assume is the Hannah Hinds, daughter of Capt John HInds, the Rev. War soldier) is named in the explanation below. I do know that his daughter married a Newport. Some of their grandchildren are named below. NOTE: MARGARET (ABEL) WOLLARD WAS THE WIDOW OF CALVIN NEWPORT WHEN SHE MARRIED NATHANIEL WOLLARD - (EC, 1987) State of Missouri, Dalles Co. August the 1 day 1850 (The body of the letter is here but I copied just the notes after the letter - Nan) NOTES: Nathaniel Wollard (1792-1863) 1st married Margaret Hardison. One of their children, Delilah, later married Richard C. Newport. Margaret Abel Newport Wollard (1808-1893), daughter of John David Abel and Ann Harner of Roane Co., Tn. Margaret married Calvin Newport (1806- 1840) in 1828 in Tn. Margaret, Calvin and family moved to Mo. in 1837. There remains a log, or account, of their trip West and the route they took. Calvin was the brother of Asa Newport and son of Richard Newport and Hannah Hinds. Their children were: Richard C., John David, Sarah Elizabeth, Mary Jane, Phoebe Ann, and Asa Monroe C. Newport Margaret (Abel Newport) & Nathaniel Wollard's children were: Rachel Louise (see above, "the garle is dead"), Nathaniel Jackson, Silas Benton, and James Moses Robert Wollard. Nathaniel, a large landowner in Buffalo, was killed by renegades with the usual disagreements over the Civil War. I (Edna Clack) also have a letter written by one of the children who witnessed his killing, describing the terrible scene. Margaret was living with her son, AMC Newport, in the 1870 Census. ------------------------

I have found so far that there are two ways to search the archives. The first given below is searched by keyword . The second address below is to search the Threaded Archive. It is split into months - so you get an entire month at a time. This is good for those who leave the list for vacations. You'll need to sign up for this site with an ID and a password. I don't think there is a charge. I am a Rootsweb member so am not sure about this. Try it and the site will let you know if you can sign up without paying dues. If any list member knows how to search between two certain dates - please post it to the list. I'd love to know how to do it. Regards, Nan List Host Hinds-L [email protected] ============================== Here is the address for searching by using a keyword or keywords. http://searches2.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl?list=HINDS-L ------------------------------------------------------- This address below is to search the Threaded Archives. You can search month by month. An ID and password is needed. I don't think one needs to be a Rootsweb member. If so - the dues are $12. per year. http://archiver.rootsweb.com/list-index.html
A Hinds-L list member wrote: ">I am relatively new in this online world and am not able to use the information given to me through the messages I have received. Can you please help me by telling me how to connect to this information?<" Hi member: You are not so new if you can find the list host of Hinds-L and can send a message to me privately. I give you a definite "A" for being able to do that. (The address is:[email protected] but feel free to use the address below my signature below) I am sending this to the list because if you are having problems then others most likely are having the same. Don't be afraid to hit the Reply button and post your frustrations on the list. This list needs a little "perking up". All the members seem to be in the listening mode at the moment. Now, let's tackle your connection problems. I wish you had a copy and had pasted one of the messages so I would have an example of what you are speaking of. So, I'll have to guess. I send messages and usually document where I found them - so I am guessing that you would like to go to the same place and search for names other than HInds. Right? Or maybe read the entire article of which I just pasted the part concerning "Hinds". If the document comes from Ancestry.com - then you need to be a member of Ancestry.com to search that site. The only reason I feel comfortable about copying and pasting info from that site is because it also owns Rootsweb which owns the Hinds-L mail list. I notice that many of the addresses that I post end up on two lines. For example it will look like this: http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ifetch2?/u1/data/me+index+108718569108 +F If you copy and paste that address into the MSExplorer (or whatever) address line - notice that the +F did not paste. So add the +F yourself and it should take you to the address. Sometimes - the homepage wants a person to go through the front door. So start with just the first part of the address and then add the rest of the address after reaching the home address. IE - copy the address in a message & go to that first part - lets say: http://rootsweb.com When you arrive at rootsweb.com - highlight and delete that address and paste the longer address. It should take you to that document. If I say that it was found using the state archives search at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ussearch.htm then it means I was clicking on a state on that page and then putting in a keyword - usually Hinds. Just hit the reply button and ask what keywords I was using - other members probably want the same answer. Hinds-L members - please feel free to send your questions about some of the messages to the list. It probably means that more than one of you needs help. Just be sure to cite the subject of the message so I'll know which message you mean. If you hit "Reply" the subject of that message will automatically be inserted for you. Do the same if the ancestor mentioned happens to be one of yours and you'd like to expound on that person. We NEED some conversation on this list!!!!!!!!! I'll send a separate message explaining how to use the two methods of searching the Hinds-L archives. Regards, Nan Wolf List Host Hinds-L Mail List [email protected]
Hi:' I can't remember the first name of Haines in this story below but I think it was Adam. Can one of you Hinds researchers tell me the right names and spelling of these names. On a PBS auction show last night - a lady was showing a tiny pair of Indian mocassins that family legend said may have come from the Indian Chief Joseph Brandt. Her ancestor is Adam or Alexander Haines (sp?) - a Rev War loyalist who arrived in Canada from Vermont (I believe it was) and fought along side Joseph Brandt, whose Indian tribe fought with the English in the French and Indian War and also in the Revolutionary War. The auction people said it is documented that Haines and Brandt did indeed fight alongside one another. But, the moccasins were made about 1860 which ended that story about Haines being presented with the moccasins by Joseph Brandt. The auctioneer mentioned that there is a museum to Joseph Brandt somewhere in Ontario. Now, can one of you PULEEZE straighten me out on the correct names and spelling of these two men and which state Haines came from. Just hit REPLY so we can all get the straight scoop. I'd also like to hear more about this Haines and his Rev War activities and what happened to him after the war. Did he return to his home state? Regards, Nan [email protected]

Soon after this he built a saw mill and a grist mill on Bog brook, both of which mills served their day and generation and peacefully passed away before 1810. JEFFERSON HINDS built a second grist mill there, in which John Nelson put a shingle machine. The whole establishment broke camp in the flood of 1832. Just above, on the same stream, ASHER HINDSs and Thomas Smiley built a double saw mill that worked its life away for its owners. Thank you for visiting this site and I wish you a good day & happy hunting. We from the following from the Bailey Family Gen "929.2 B16c V1" at Maine State Library. On page 43 Subject title: Missing Records of Portland, 1775-1786 As inquiry is often made for the Records of Portland covering 1775-1786, George C Burgess, Esq, when he was city clerk kindly furnished the Recorder the following explanation concerning the records: "It is well known that Portland was orginally a part of the incorporated town of Falmouth, and when the city was set off from the town, Falmouth claimed and held the town records from the earliest date to 1786, the time of the separation. Desiring a copy of early records at hand the city appropriated in 1849 a certain sum of money for transcribing these records, then kept in the store of John K Noyes in West Falmouth, he being the town clerk, and the store his office, and Mr C S D Griffin was employed to copy them. The selectmen refused to allow the records to be taken from the town. Mr Griffin was compelled to make the copy in the vicinity of the clerk's office and while employed in this work the store took fire and was burned, 9 Oct 1849, together with the records, excepting the first two volumes which Mr Griffin had a few days before removed to his room for the purpose mentioned, ( dates 10 Mar 1718 to 25 May 1775.) The records lost dated from 1775-1786. This explains the hiatus of about eleven years in the records of Portland. This explanation does not leave the matter plain to the understanding of the reader, so I will add that the original books were destroyed at the time of the fire, those saved were the certified copies that had been made by Mr Griffin that are now in the use at the office room of our city clerk, which have been indexed, and are very often consulted now-a-days by people looking after footprints of ancestors. Mr Charles C S D Griffin, who made the copy, was a Portland man, born 29 May 1808. At the time of the great fire of 1866, he was living on Congress Street, near India, and lost everything. He was many years a bookkeeper for the Portland Gas Company, residing at 202 High Street, Miss Julia W Griffin, now occupying the premises. He departed his life 12 Mar 1898, age 90y. The daughter is the last of the Griffin family, at one time a city school teacher. ------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------ JORDAN James 2-2-6-0-0 6 see [VR 2-234 Portland] died ae 67y at Portland with Masonic honors in 1820 Was he born 1753 res Cape Elizabeth, d Portland 1820 wife Lydia __________________ W26690 He was late of Portland in 1822, a tanner, His widow, Lydia sold land to James Lunt, a marnier on Fore st. KEENE, BEFORE THE MAINE PRESS ASSOCIATION AT PORTLAND, MAINE, OCTOBER 10, 1919.) (This is just one paragraph from the middle of the speech- Nan) Your association in later years has been represented in Washing- ton public life by two men of conspicuous ability Asher C. Hinds of Portland and Herbert M. Lord of Rockland. The work of one has ended and time is still recording the achievements of the other. Maine has been generous in recognizing the real worth of her sons and daughters. But I sometimes wonder whether the intellectual strength and high character of Asher Hinds are appreciated in the State at large as they were in the National Capital. If not, it is because self-effacement, which characterized his life and work, has obscured at home the sterling qualities of the editor-statesman. His chosen work in Washington was done alone and only when the product of his brain and industry forced him into the light did the public appraise his full measure of ability. As a parliamentarian lie was the peer of any man, living or dead, and the wonderful com- pilation of parliamentary precedents which bears his name will guide Congressional action for all time. In mid-life, his great frame and brain broke under self-imposed public duty. Asher Hinds was truly great.

Hi: A volunteer at Cherokee Co. TX very kindly sent the Hinds burials in Larrisa Cemetery, Cherokee Co. TX. J. M. Hinds is James Monroe Hinds, husband of Sarah Elizabeth. The top four have been identified - does anyone know who Leonard Hines is? I have some other Hines burials in Cherokee Co. TX - write me if you want them. They are not at Larrisa Cemetery. I went to the Huntsville library yesterday afternoon. It has been a long while since I have had that opportunity. At any rate, I looked in books related to Jennings County, IN and found the following: Bethel Cemetery Hinds, James born May 24, 1807 and died April 23, 1881. Hinds, Mary (Wife of James) died Jan 23, 1874 age 62 years and 6 months. There were also various spellings of Haines. Scipio (or Amick) Cemetery Hinds, Al --- Ann? (Footstone could not be read. Found at: http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ifetch2?/u1/data/nj+index+4346072456+F The term "bound to" evidently means "posted", Note that the witnesses names of the 2nd entry were cut out. Strange. Do you think some family researcher was collecting family signatures in the days before copy machines were available? Sad. Sad. Keddington These are strictly tombstone inscriptions, not a list of burials in Rahway Cemetery. This was apparently made up in the 1950s as the last burial date noted was 1952. If someone you are looking for is not on this list, they could still be buried in the cemetery either after the list was compiled or without a tombstone. The asterisk (*) indicates that no stone was found for the individual so designated, his name and relationship appearing on the stone of a member of his family. (N.X.N.) These inscriptions were transcribed to go onto the internet by a team of volunteers which included Barbara Benjamin, Joyce Soden Brown, Judy Buckney, Cynthia Busch, Bill Cadmus, Alice Caggiano, Sydney Cardner, Debbie Coon, Arlene Dunkum, Kathy Fehr, Mary Anne Fisher, Carolyn Greene, Penny Hanes, Eileen Karan, Marian Mallory, Barbara Nocchi, Kathleen Pantano, Judy Pisano, Pat Reynolds, Mary Schwarzenberger, and Laura Thomas. This is already in a Rootsweb file but I thought it should also be parts of our Hinds-L archives at Rootsweb. For those researching a Hinds-Higgins marriage - note that a Higgins is placed between two Hinds names. Hmmm. Maher The following list of about 80 male inhabitants of Elizabeth, New Jersey in 1743 was apparently the basis for a church related tax. The legend "Mr. Dickeson Rate" doubtless refers to Rev. Jonathan Dickinson, who was then pastor of the [First] Presbyterian Church. Based on the family names, the list is apparently limited to the parishioners of that church the families of Westfield, Rahway and other surrounding communities, then still part of Elizabeth, are not present. Presumably, they were supporting the pastors of their own churches. The original list is at Rutgers University's Alexander Library in the Manuscript Collection of Special Collections and University Archives. Uncertain transcriptions are indicated by question marks and surrounded by brackets. A hyphen indicates an illegible number in the original. Parenthetical material was interlined in the original. The corners of the document are missing, but most of the information can be read. Finally, the assessors appear to have affixed their own signatures to the list. Hi: If you go to: http://www.newspaperabstracts.com/usa.html and type in "Hinds" you'll find Hinds in: Troy Free Press Lincoln County Mo -Jan 1914 The New Albany Ledger-Standard - Mar 1881 Floyd Co. New Albany, IN (This same paper had a Hines in a later date issue so don't rely on the spelling) The San Diego Union San Diego CA November 14 1868 Russian River Flag Healdsburg CA June 4 1874 And don't look just in the areas where you have ancestors. For example this Hines lady from Kansas City was named in a Nevada newspaper: Rich Hill Mining Review Vol. XXIII, No. 47, August 27, 1903, p. 3 "Miss Ida Hines, who has been the guest of Rich Hill relatives and friends, returned to her home at Kansas City by this morning's Frisco" Regards, Nan Wolf [email protected]
