Hi: I spotted this while searching the NUCMC (National Union Catalog of Manuscript Collections) at: http://lcweb.loc.gov/coll/nucmc/nucmc.html Only the catalogs from 1986 to 1993 are online. The rest - from 1959 to 1885 - are available at most university libraries and very large libraries. It consists of many volumes of large 2 inch blue books. There are indexes to the volumes. The volume then explains about the manuscript and where it can be found - in what repository. This paper below can be found at Pitts LIbrary and Emory University. The Hinds researchers in England might be interested in this mention of Samuel HInds below. Regards, Nan [email protected] -------------------------------------------- Author: Whately, Richard, 1787-1863. Title: Letter, 1831 Sept. 25. Description: 1 item (1 folder). Notes: Richard Whately was born in London on February 1, 1787, the youngest of nine children of the Reverend Joseph and Jane Whately. He attended Oriel College, Oxford, where he received the B.A. in 1808. Whately was elected as a fellow at Oriel in 1811, and took the M.A. in 1812. He was a member of the Oxford circle which found fault with the traditional tenets of the Anglican Church. In 1814 he became an Anglican minister. Whately married Elizabeth Pope on July 18, 1821. In 1825 Whately took the degrees of B.D. and D.D. He was appointed principal of St. Alban Hall at Oxford that same year. John Henry Newman (MSS 100) became his vice principal and was influenced by Whately's anti-Erastianism. The two disagreed over the Oxford Movement, however, and Whately criticized Newman's Tract 90. Whately was elected to a professorship of political economy at Oxford in 1829. He remained in this post until 1831 when he was appointed archbishop of Dublin on October 23. In November of that same year, he was appointed to head the commission of "united national education." He collaborated with the Catholic archbishop, Daniel Murray (MSS 097) in an experiment to produce a religion course for the national schools that would accomodate both Anglicans and Catholics. After a prolonged illness Richard Whately died in Dublin on October 1, 1863. This is a letter from Richard Whately addressed to Lady Mary Shepherd, dated September 25, 1831. In the letter Whately explains that he had separate copies of one article from the 4th edition of his Elements of Logic printed for his friends who already owned the earlier edition. All other articles in the 4th edition were unchanged from earlier editions. Whately briefly discusses the nature of God and recommends that Lady Shepherd read works by Samuel Hinds, a noted theologian of the time. He also alludes to his recent appointment as Archbishop of Dublin. Unrestricted. Richard Whately Letter, MSS 102, Archives and Manuscripts Dept., Pitts Theology Library, Emory University. Hi: This was a private message. She gave me permission to put it on the list. She is not the Hinds researcher but she is doing this for a cousin who has a Hinds connection. I have posted both of her messages below my signature. In the opinion of another Hinds researcher that rec'd this message: "Elizabeth is the daughter of Joseph Hinds, born about 1765 in Morris County, NJ, and Elizabeth Sharp, born about 1768, daughter of Matthias and Elizabeth Sharp. Joseph's will is dated 10 Jun 1820. Joseph was the son of Levi Hinds and Sarah _____." What think you? If you reply to Victoria- make a cc: to this list. Are we off in the wrong direction? Regards, Nan [email protected] --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------- Original query message: Subject: elizabeth hinds? Date: Sun, 17 Sep 2000 11:27:55 -0400 From: "SKYROOT" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> I am in search of the ancestors of Elizabeth Hinds, who married John S. Ray/Wray in Wayne CO KY in 1828. Their daughter Malinda G. (b. 1830) is an ancestor of some of my cousins. ------------ Her second message: "Actually, it's not me but my cousins (via the Neilsons) who have Hinds roots (from Elizabeth Hinds through Malinda G. Wray/Ray b. 1830-d.1858, Alice Castillo 1855-1948 (m. George Monroe Nelson) and on down in both Nodaway CO MO (Amanda Nelson m. Frank Bowman) and departees (Sallie Nelson m. Omar Babcock) to OR/WA. Yes, you can post the info to the Hinds-L list. I'm sure there's other "collateral completests" out there who would appreciate the information. More is available on the various descendants of Malinda G. for those who are interested. Victoria "
Hi Hinds-L listers: Kim von Aspern Parker has joined our mail list. I know she has a Gueron/Guerin connection to the Hinds. Anyone else on this list with Gueron- Hinds connections? I believe you Byram researchers also connect to the Guerins. Let's hear from you. If you chat with each other privately - your info will not go into the archives for future researchers- so feel free to chat on the list. Welcome, Kim. It has been awhile since I've chatted with you so fill us in on your Hinds background. Regards, Nan Wolf Hinds-L list manager [email protected]

I also checked Knight and Overstreet to no avail. Regards, Nan [email protected]
