    3. Hi: At the MOA (Making of America) site (http://moa.umdl.umich.edu/moa_search.html) I came across a large list of deserters from Wisconsin in 1864. There is a W. H. HInds who is listed with fifteen others as having deserted as of Sept. 20, 1864 or it may mean that they deserted on that date. They were all from Milwaukee. Copied by MOA from: List of persons, residents of the state of Wisconsin, reported as deserters from the military or naval service of the United States. Wisconsin. 3. Hi: I spotted at the MOA (Making of America) site a list of people at Ft. Kearney at a specific time listing their wagons, stock, etc. and their destination. It is a list of several hundred immigrants who had signed a petition while passing through Ft. Kearney asking that a bridge be built over the Green River. I posted the bit about S. H. Hinds below. Regards, Nan [email protected] ============= http://moa.umdl.umich.edu/moa_search.html Found by going to the Book search (there is also a journal search) at MOA and searching for Hinds - Arkansas - and not Mississippi. S. H. Hinds of Wisconsin had 2 wagons, 7 people, 17 head of stock and his destination was Oregon. You might want to visit the site and see the others at the Ft. at the same time. Some were headed to CA - the rest to OR. Copied by MOA from: Additional estimate for Fort Kearney, South Pass, and Honey Lake wagon road. Letter from the acting Secretary of the Interior, transmitting a communication from Colonel Lander ... Lander, Frederick West, 1821-1862. 27 p. 26 cm. [Washington? 1861]

We need more researchers such as yourself! I omitted one fact about Joseph Hinds that I should have mentioned. Kay Lamb has informed me that she has the Joseph Hinds bible. That should prove that Joseph was the father of John Henry. I have asked her about Joseph's wife but she has not answered except to say that she had never said that Joseph's wife was Rutha Higgins. She also said that she had nothing earlier than Joseph. Kay was writing a book but it has grown into twenty books which have yet to be published. Needless to say, several of us are awaiting publication anxiously. Barbara

    3. Posted on: HINDS Queries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/surnames/h/i/HINDS/queries/7 Surname: Hinds ------------------------- Lynn, I appreciate the information about the last name of the wife of John Henry and the full name of the wife of Sylvanus. Please list your sources so our records will be complete. I had removed Abigail as the first name of the wife of Sylvanus after learning that his mother, Abigail, had signed a deed with him which caused the confusion. I have little to add to the information posted by Nan. According to David Trimble in Hinds of Kentucy and Tennessee, the husband of Hannah, sister of Rhoda, was Gabriel Graham. Unfortunately, I have been unable to find any Rutha Higgins that Joseph Hinds could have married. The Higgins family is well documented which indicates that her last name was not Higgins. If anyone has any clues as to her identity, please post it. Furthermore, I have been unable to find any evidence of the identity of the parents of Joseph Hinds, father of John Henry Hinds. Hopefully, someone will uncover that also.

    3. Hi: I wrote to Lynn who posted the query below and thought I might as well post this the list. Please critique the info and answer any differences you might have online so the rest of us can correct our info. Some of this comes from two books noted below and a lot came from a private researcher who included documentation with her papers but I did not have enough sense to copy the documentation in the notes. Lynn wrote in a Hinds query online: "Need help-its greatly appreciated. I have a John Henry Hinds (m) to Abigail Bayless. Their son Sylvanus (m) Mary Polly SHARKEY. Their dau Mary (m) Adam HARNER. They are from VA, TN, PA.. Thanks again, lynn" Your mention of Bayless rang a bell so I went to my database and found a Hinds with a middle name of Bayless: Rhoda Bayless Hinds, b 19 July 1773 Ft. Defiance, now Caldwell Co. NC, died 1819 Jackson, TN, dau. of Levi HInds, b 25 Aug 1742, New Hanover, Morris Co. NJ and wife, Sarah (or Oliphant) - no last name know.
