Hi: Found this (below) in the Randolph Co. Gen Society Journal Spring 1997 Volume XXi, No l For those who collect their ancestor's signatures - Thomas A. Hinds would have signed the jury verdict that is posted below. I don't have this Thomas Hinds in my database - anyone have him connected to a line? Regards, Nan [email protected] ---------------------------------- "Randolph County Coroner's Inquests 1808 - 1848 The following coroner's inquests are location in NC State Archives under Randolph Co. Misc. Records - CR 81.928.7. The are categorized by decade - each decade having its own folder. The records are of three types. The most common is the coroner's jury verdict. The document itself is signed bvy all members of the jury, most of whom wer near neighbors of the dead individual. The coroner also signs the document. Another less frequent type of coroner's records, and a much less informative one is the coroner's account. The presence of these accounts is a clear indicator that farm more inquests took place than we have verdicts. The third and least common record consists of direct evicence taken from witnesses about the circumstances of a aprticular death. These are most informative and interesting and truly open up the lives of the people involved. An effort have been made to abstract the contents of such evidence in brief and pointed form below. In the case of the most common type of record - the coroner's jury verdict - it is necessary to establish a standard template for abstracting. We have chosen the following model: A. Name of deceased individual B. Site of inquest/place where body was discovered (if specified and distinct from inquest site) C. Date of inquest/date of death if specified or distinguished D. Witness names (if recorded) E. Name of Coroner or Acting Coroner F. Coroner's Jury G. Verdict For the other two types of record, a more informal style of abstraction has been slected. The records so not appear in strict chronological order within the decade files." Found on page 16 of the same journal: "A. unknown woman slave of Martin W. Leach C. 21 Apr 1848/20 Apr 1848 E. I have been trying to check on some of my back mail which I am so far behind on. Sorry about the long delay. I don't know anything about a Hines Cemetery in Bradley County, at this time. In my line, I have a Julia Ann JOHNS, b. Ga. or Ala. Jan. 7, 1836, who is a great-great-grandaunt(?). She is the daughter of my great-great-great grandfather, Joseph S. JOHNS, b. October 31, 1808 in South Carolina, and d. June 19, 1900 in Drew County, Ark. I have not been able to prove these marriages, but I do know that Julia Ann JOHNS is my kin, listed in 1860 Calhoun County, AR census with my maternal great-great grandparents, John S. and Mary JOHNS YATES. She is listed as Julia Ann Benton, Age 21. The YATES family is also listed in the 1870 Calhoun County, AR census. We believe Julia married Franklin Doc BENTON, b. c1836 in Alabama. They were divorced, and Julia married 2) William F. M. HINES, b. c1827 in Georgia. I believe it is Julia and William who are listed on the same page of the 1870 Calhoun Co., census, Page 79, Jackson Township, Line 32. (John and Mary YATES are on line 1). I don't know if this is any help to you, but if we match, please let me know. Helen Leigh Allen Waldrup wrote: > > Is there a Hines Cemetary located in Bradley County? The 1830 census fits Byram Hinds, son of Levi Hinds and Huldah Byram. His son, Byram Wilburn Hinds, had not been born in 1830. His sons living at that time were Carroll, Alfred Luther and Claiborne Walton. His daughters were Mahala, Mary Ann and Sarah. Barbara

Hi: Anyone have an idea as to who this Capt. Hugh L. Hinds, company commander is below. He is Capt. for the G 5th Infantry California Volunteers during the Civil War? I found it while searching for Hinds and Tulare at the MOA site at: http://library5.library.cornell.edu/moa/ On a later page it mentions that he is Capt. Hugh L. Hinds and in the District of Western Arizona he is in charge of Fort Bowie. There is another Captain in charge of Tucson. I am posting the makeup of their traveling encampment as they move from CA to AZ to the Rio Grande. Would a Captain also be a volunteer? Or do you think that Capt. Hinds was in the "regular" army and was put in charge of one group of volunteers? Regards, Nan [email protected] ----------------------------- Book: United States. War Dept. et al.
