    3. Hello Iris... I forgot to mention that BURTON, although it has it's roots in England, along with Rolfe, Bolling, and COBBS/COBB, these are also found among the descendents of Pocahontas. http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=ISO-8859-1&q=%22Red+cloud%22%2C+genealogy http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=ISO-8859-1&q=%22Red+cloud%22%2C+genealogy%2C+burton http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=ISO-8859-1&q=%22Red+cloud%22%2C+genealogy%2C+hill http://www.google.com/search?q=%22Red+cloud%22,+genealogy,+%22mary+hill%22&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&filter=0 It appears that Red Cloud was a Lakota War Chief... remember that he did travel and that he may took on many wives as was the custom back then. This was a good thing, not bad as some imagine. Adultery was not permitted and was punishable in many tribes. Native Americans back then did not have state recognized marriages, but tribal marriages... one that was blessed by the high priest/shaman. Also, as the USA started to take hold here, many Native Americans were forced to take on a white man's name and others did it just to fit in to the white man's world. Many Native Americans, as children were sent to boarding schools to take the Indian out of them and were given Christian names. Some took on the white man's names just to hide so that they weren't sent to a reservation. Some names are derived from their Native American names for example... Canoe comes from Dragging Canoe, Wood comes from "The Little Carpenter", Killer comes from Mankiller, Hunter Reese/Reece came from! The Hunter... and so on. I hope that this helps also. Peace and blessings. Dolores Cobb Phifer ----- Original Message ----- From: TwoWolvesDancing To: [email protected] Sent: Monday, September 30, 2002 2:46 PM Subject: Re: [HILL-L] Red Cloud/L. Burton/Elberton Hill Hello Iris. Well, you need to just jump in and start with a Google Search. I find that it is the most extensive and user friendly search engine around. You can search within the results. The trick is to put the names in "quote marks". I have Hill as a collateral family name... which means that one of my great-grandpop's siblings married a Hill... which makes their children cousins by blood. At this time I am not aware of any Native American blood on that side as of yet. I do however have Cherokee and/or other Native American tribes blood through several of my other surnames. I would start out with what you do know... Red Cloud, L. Burton, and Elberton Hill and search them each separately. I would then talk to the rest of your family, especially the old ones/elders and ask them to tell you all that they know. Keep notes. Make notes on any nicknames... they could be clues to a Native American name... like Bear or Feather. Also. makes notes on where they lived and an! y migration patterns that occurred. By the way, BROWN also shows up on many Native American lists and Rolls. I also have BROWN in both parents' lines. http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=ISO-8859-1&q=%22Red+cloud%22 http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=ISO-8859-1&q=%22Red+cloud%22%2C+%22L.+Burton%22+ Your search - "Red cloud", "Elberton Hill" - did not match any documents. http://www.google.com/search?q=%22Elberton+Hill%22+&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&filter=0 http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&q=%22L%2E+Burton%22+ http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=ISO-8859-1&q=%22L.+Burton%22%2C+%22red+cloud%22 http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=ISO-8859-1&q=%22L.Burton%22&btnG=Google+Search You can search-within-the-results with known family names. Hope this helps. Peace and blessings. Burton/Elberton Hill Hi All, You know about a week ago, when I was lamenting about the fact that I could not find records of my ggrandfather and I told you that family tale about he might have been native American? Well, it could very well be true. I got an email from a lady asking me about him. She said she had been researching Red Cloud, and one of his decendants told her that he changed his name to L.Burton or Elberton Hill. Now, my question is how do you go about researching Native American history? If anyone can tell me where to start, please let me know. Thanks much! Iris Hill Brown
