Hello fellow Hills. I am looking for information on JOHNSON HILL and AUGUSTUS HILL, both buried in Black Creek Cemetary in Westport, Essex County, NY. JOHNSON HILL was my ggggrandfather. AUGUSTUS may have been my ggggrand uncle, but I don't know. Can't find any records tying them together. Johnson Hill's son EDGAR HILL and his wife Mary Cherbino lived in Dickenson, NY at the time of the Civil War. He enlisted as a private there. AUGUSTUS HILL was related somehow, but I have no idea how. He was married to Almira Smith of Westport, NY. JOHNSON HILL' S daughter JULIA HILL married Jerome Cherbino of Addison County,VT in 1848. ANNA A. HILL was JOHNSON'S wife. I wonder what happened to her? She is not buried beside him in Westport. All I know is she was born in 1806 in somewhere in Canada. Her maiden name was "BEELL". I can't find any records on her. She would have been my ggggrandmother. JOHNSON HILL also had a son MONTRAVILLE HILL who was in the military, because he had some sort of tax exemption according to state census records. He exchanged land with father according to land records, and then disappears after January 30, 1861. He doesn't seem to show up in any other Essex county, NY records after that. How does one find what happened to someone we think was in the civil war? Another daughter of JOHNSON HILL was SARAH HILL. She was married to William F. Gregory on Jan 26, 1845 in Westport, NY. Both disappear after that. JOHNSON HILL may have in the New York State Militia. Does anyone know where I can look to confirm this.? I also have a SILAS HILL who was born in 1818, to JOHNSON HILL but I don't know what happend to him. All I know is that he was 32 years old in the 1850 federal census. SILAS had two sisters, CHARLOTTE and JANE born in 1822 and 1825. They had two other brothers, JON HILL born in 1839, and HENRY HILL born in 1829, all according the 1850 Federal Census. What happened to them is a mystery. Without vitals it is hard. If any of these Hills sound familar please contact me with any leads. thanks Wesley Hill What is the story with the 1860 Federal Census? It not seem to be available at Ancestry . com?
