    1. [HILL-L] SOME STATISTICS ON DNA TESTING
    2. E. Ray Hill
    3. Hi Hill Subscribers, Not many people are aware of the extent to which DNA testing (as a supplement to genealogy research) is going on and has been going on for a number of years. I know of only one website that is making an effort to keep up with new developments in DNA testing relevant to family historians, and that is Chris Pomery who maintains a website at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~allpoms/genetics.html. He says: "DNA testing is now establishing itself as the third, and newest, core source in the field of family history, supplementing knowledge gained from oral and documentary records. While the convergence of genetics & genealogy into a new science called 'genetic genealogy' is some way off, DNA tests by one-name groups in the UK and the USA are already revealing valuable and challenging results." He lists the following labs involved in the testing of Y-chromosome segments (DYS markers): (1) Oxford Ancestors: 26 surname groups registered, $190 fee for testing 10 DYS markers (2) Gene Tree: 3 surname groups registered, $225 fee per individual for testing 22 DYS markers (no group rate) (3) Relative Genetics & Ancestry: 22 surname groups registered, $195 fee for testing 22 DYS markers (4) Family Tree DNA: 133 surname groups registered, $169 fee for testing 25 DYS markers ($99 for 12) As you can see, the company used by our Hill DNA project (Family Tree DNA of Houston, TX), is not only has the best rates, but they test for more DYS markers. This company works with the lab at the University of Arizona to do its DNA testing and its reputation is impeccable. You can find more information on Family Tree DNA through the links provided on our website at www.livingston.net/hilldna. Also, there is plenty of information on our Hill DNA project. If you have run into a brick wall in searching for your elusive Hill ancestors, we invite you to join us in this unique approach to searching for our ancestors. E. Ray Hill, Project Coordinator Hill Surname DNA Project [email protected] www.livingston.net/hilldna PS. No one participating in our project is acquainted with or affiliated with the people at Family Tree DNA, the scientists at the University of Arizona, or any other testing lab, nor do any of us have any financial interest in any of these organizations. 100% of the costs for participating in this project have come out of our individual pockets, except for six participants who received financial assistance from another participant, who wishes to remain anonymous.
