    1. [HILL-L] ??TN Cousin of Sen Benj. Harvey Hill of GA
    2. Hello Everyone, About a year ago I inherited my two aunt's personal papers, correspondence, genealogy files. I of course, went through the genealogy files quickly and found some correspondence 1941 from a V. Royt Hill of Birmingham Alabama to a third party regarding his Hill ancestors (seemingly not Isaac Hill and Lucinda Wallace) being cousins of Senator Benjamin Harvey Hill. Since then I have not been successful in tracking this V. Royt Hill or descendants down. However, I am finally going through the mounds of other correspondence, and I found another similar letter from V. Royt Hill to a third party ("Charles and Elizabeth") of greater interest. It was apparently sent from one aunt to the other in the "regular" correspondence pile. There are several names in the following paragraph, and I and probably Jackie and others will wonder if anyone can identify them and their ancestry. In sum what we have is a JOAB HILL with a brother THOMAS. Joab is a great grandfather of V. ROYT HILL, writing in 1941. The brother Thomas has a son HENRY TAYLOR HILL, who according to his daughter MARY HILL BOX, for a while left home in TN and went into NC or GA and stayed with the father or grandfather of BEN HILL of Ga, who was a cousin or relative. The writer expresses the need for more verification, perhaps because it 'looks good" to claim a relationship with Senator Benjamin Harvey Hill. Here is the paragraph, following some references to Senator Ben Hill and the book the Hills of Wilkes County, GA: "I had a letter from Mrs. Mary Hill Box, a grand daugghter of Thomas Hill. (He was a brother to my great grandfather Joab Hill.) In this letter she states that her father Henry Taylor Hill, when a young man left home and went into N.C. or Ga. from Tenn. and stayed for some time with a cousin or relative who was the father of or grandfather of Ben Hill of Ga. However, I want more verification than this." Regarding his possible skepticism of the claim of cousinhood. I can understand. All the while his children & grandchildren, frustrated by his silence on the matter, had been researching the ancestry of my illegit. Hugh Lawson White Hill, b. 1840 inWarren Co TN and had decided he was the son of HLW Hill, b. 1810 there...nevertheless whichever one of them was writing his obituary said he was the nephew of Civil War General A. P. Hill, who unless I am way off the mark, has no known relationship to the descendants of Isaac Hill and Lucinda Wallace that lived in Warren Co TN. Any thoughts? Best Regards, Janet Hunter

    3. Hi there Janet The HILL surname is very popular and found all over the world. However with England being the starting point for family members to emigrate, I presume we can assume that ancestors with the surname originally originated from the UK, especially when we take the USA and South Africa into the equation. (I'm only mentioning USA and SA because of your connection plus my own) Elizabeth and Charles HILL is also a very popular parent's name it also seems, you asked for any thoughts so here are mine. The connection to the HILL family comes from South Africa. There are so many HILL families, one cannot seem to keep up. However, I'm posting what I have. You never know. You might just find a connection. I'm looking for James HILL. (B. 1801 D. 5 July 1877) He was the father of Isabella that married Frederick Waarde HENWICK. It seems that Isabella could have been a child from a 2nd marriage as she was born when James was ± 50 years old. Charles (B. 1779 D. 6/5/1856) Passenger list has him - B. 1782, but the death certificate has him dying at the age of 77. Elizabeth/Agnes (B. 17175) Elizabeth is on the passenger list but on death certificate it is Agnes. Children James (B. 1801 D. 5/7/1877) Passenger list has him - B. 1805, but death certificate has him dying at the age of 76. Jane (B. 1806) - No details. Elizabeth (B.1810) married Thomas MILLS (B. 1799) Dates not confirmed, but Elizabeth died at 99 years old. Charles (B. 1812) married Wilhelmina BARENDS (No birth details) Henry (B. 1812) married Clarissa Anne Seadon CROFT (B. 1818) The whole HILL family came out on the Sir George Osborn and disembarked in Algoa Bay, latter settling in the Albany District in and around Salem. I think that's why the HENWICK's were all under the impressions that they were from the 1820 Settler descent, which they weren't.
