Attn: All HILL List Subscribers: I must clarify once again (since so many people are lately turning the HILL list into a virus warning forum), that no virus can be distributed by the HILL list. Attachments are deleted automatically by the Rootsweb server. The latest virus types DO attempt to mail themselves to any address in the infected computer's address book (including Rootsweb list addresses), but the Rootsweb servers delete all attachments, therefore the only thing that shows on a list subscribers email that originates from an infected computer is the text, filename, or URL information that the virus writes on the email. List subscribers must understand and rest assured that they are NOT receiving a virus from the list, however, if they chose to go to the URL address that is printed on the virus message, they could be at risk. The safest thing to do is to run virus scanning software on all downloads before opening any file, update your virus scanning software as often as possible, and only go to URLs that you are familiar with or appear to be legitimate and on topic. It is your own responsibility to protect your own system. Though I am sure everyone is trying to help, unless these discussions by subscribers are worded more carefully it is unfairly frightening to the 800+ HILL subscribers, and it is unfair to the diligent administrators at Rootsweb, who work so hard to protect us all. Carry on, be careful, enjoy the list, and have a safe virus free holiday! Byron Hill HILL List @ Rootsweb
