    1. [HILL-L] Re: Mississippi Hills: JOEL HILL (son of Jesse) of Yalobusha Co., Ms.
    2. Hi Rich, Thanks for responding. Yes, it does look like you and my wife are related. While I have not done any extensive research on this line yet, I got much of my information from a cousin of my wife, Ann Clark, who lives in Grenada, MS, not far from Yalobusha County. I have personally visited the grave sites of many of the family there. Pursuant to your request I will start with Jesse Hill and work toward the present with JOEL HILL as I understand it. Ann sent me the following information: I. Jesse Hill*, son of William Hill, Sr.*, whose will was probated in Edgefield County, SC, in 1820 mentioned the following children: Susannah Casey, Sallie Garrett, wife of Thomas Garrett, Willliam, John and Joel*. William, son of Jesse, was a Baptist minister and lived in Greewood, S.C. and married Susan Crews. John, son of Jesse, was Probate Judge of Edgefield County, and Joel Hill* died in Yalobusha County, MS in 1853. II. JOEL HILL*, son of Jesse, married first Frances Carpenter on March 12, 1829. After her death he married Emily Martin on December 20, 1833, the daughter of Thomas and Rebekea (sp?) Martin. Joel was born January 3, 1806 and died May 26, 1853. Frances Carpenter, daughter of Rubin Carpenter, was born January 3, 1806 (same as Joel Hill) and died September 12, 1832. Second wife, Emily Martin was born February 11, 1813 and died December 26, 1862. Deed dated April 30, 1840 from Joel Hill, President of Board of Police, Yalobusha County. Joel and wife, Frances Carpenter, had a daughter, Mary Ann, born December 26, 1829, who married Thomas Carroll. They also had a daughter Anity Elizabeth who married Wiley Stevens. (Grandson, Andrew Stevens, Durant, MS). Anity Elizabeth's second husband was Jim Blackburn and they had a daughter, Corinne (sp?). Joel Hill* and Emily Martin had: 1) Martha Hill, born March 17, 1834, died July 14, 1863, and married James Martin and had children, Aurelius, James and William. Martha's husband was her 1st cousin. 2) Mary Elizabeth Hill, born July 26, 1836. 3) Emaline Hill, born April 25, 1839, married Robert Jennings. 4) Sarah Jane Hill, born November 21, 1840, died November 15, 1923, married Samuel Gooch. Their children were Samuel A., William, Daniel, Thomas, Emily Buckner and Lissie Pittman. (Married last names??) 5) George McDuffin Hill, born April 30, 1842 and died July 4, 1910. (Note: This McDuffin name may be an allied line.) 6) John C. Calhoun Hill*, born January 7, 1844, married two Wilborne sisters. His first wife, Mary Wilborne, and he had one son who died small. Georgianne Wilborne, his second wife, was born April 30, 1859 and died November 4, 1939. They had the following children: John Leo, Andrew Jackson, Samuel Calhoun*, Stella (Mrs. Jack B. Martin), Mrs. George Westly Martin, Earl Wilborn, Andrew and Samuel. 7) Egbert Hill 8) Joshua J. Hill, borny July 29, 1851. 9) Louisa Hill, born November 24, 1853, who married Willam Dixan Priddy. 10) Joel P. Hill, born February, 1847, married December 23, 182, to Elizabeth Watkins Purdie. 11) Evaline Hill, born January 4, 1838, died February 12, 1918, married Joby or Jolly Martin in Yalobush County, Ms. * denotes ancestors of my wife, Patricia Ann Hill. [Also note this is not the first Joel in this supposed line. There was at least another Joel born 1763 who married Ann Watson , a twin of Joshua, and a son of William Hill, Sr. As stated before this information is not verified.] I have more information. I'll go through my filing cabinet and send you what I have. I have also copied some printed materials so if you will provide me with your address, I'll be happy to supply that also without charge. Thanks for getting back with me. I always appreciate getting any information I can on this family. With warm regards, Dockie Ollie L.
