    1. Re: [HILL-L] Hill Crest
    2. Howdy All Hill Researchers: I would like to start by saying that I am not a descendant of the HILL Family. My beloved wife, now deceased, was the grandaughter of Mary Belle Hill who descended from Col Abel Hill and Elizabeth Waggoner. In the last 10 plus years I have done extensive research on the Hill Family of Virginia, because Mary Belle always said that she was a cousin of the famous Civil War General Ambrose Powell Hill. In my research at the Virginia Room of the Fairfax County Library in Virginia I came across the following information. "The taproot of the Hill Family stretched back to the 12th century in England and its ancestors belonged to the noble family of HULL. For reasons unknown the name changed to HILL sometime during the reign of King Henry VI (1422-1461). Some evidence suggests the HULLS descended from the Hamlet Plantagenet a son of King Henry II." During the early part of the colonization of Virginia several members of the HILL Family emigrated to the eastern shore of Virginia. In 1630 Henry Hill of Shropshire England and his brother William settled in the area that later became Middlesex Co., VA. In the year of 1740 Russell Hill, who was a great grandson of William, along with his brother Needles moved inland and became the original settlers of Culpeper Co., VA. Russell was the great grandfather of the famous Civil War General Ambrose Poswell Hill. Warmest Regards, Bernie in Northern Virginia
