Have ancestors who settled 1800's in Patten and Lewiston, ME; 1800's in Canaan, Sanbornton, Franklin, NH. Also in 1917, one Hill moved from ME in 1896 and became a merchant in Boston. Also, Hallowell, ME ancestor filed marriage intent there in 1871 but could not document marriage. I am trying to locate information of what forts or protection from Indian uprising or what have caused these ancestors to be on the move in this era. They had occupations of shoemaker, harness maker, farmer, iceman, mail controller, merchant and, of course, housewife for the women. Thanks for reading and hope to get some great response.
