    1. [HILL-L] Hill Crest
    2. The Crest handed down to me reads: HILL As so often happens when surnames were adopted, The Hill family name was probably taken from their place of residents, in this case, those who lived on a hill. Long a prominant family in England, the Hill family has been held in high esteem since the time of Queen Elizabeth. One of the most noted members of the family was Sir Rowland Hill, an eminant merchant and Lord Mayor of London in 1549. He was known for his many contributions to charities and public projects. One of the earliest settlers to come to America Bearing this name was William Hill who arrived in 1632. He first made his home in Massachussets and later moved to Connecticut. Branches of his family can be found throughout the United States and persons bearing his name are well represented in the arts and professions as well as in the world of business. Arms: Sable, on fess between three leopards passant quadrant or, spotted of the field, as many escallops gules. Crest: Sources consulted suggest that crest and supporters are usually by those claiming ancestry from royal line. Motto: Per Deum et ferrum obtinui ( By God and my sword I have obtained).
