I am researching the KY Hill family for information on my great grandfather. In the 1880 Lee Co., KY Census, I find that he may be the son of John/Joel H(enry) Hill b 1830 NC m Arrena Moore b1744 NC Children: Rufus b1865 unknown, Mary 1867 NC, Phoebe E 1868 NC, Henry 1870VA, Walter J 1873 Va, John 1878 KY, James 1880 VA, and twins Abba and Pallo Alto b 1878 Lee Co., KY. Rufus marries Francis Elizabeth Congleton abt 1885 in either Lee or Wolfe Co., KY Children: James Russell b 1886 Menifee, Jesse1888 Lee, and my line Lillie Lou b 1892 Lee Co. Lillie married Adrain Benjamin Ratliff 1908 Montgomery Co., KY Rufus and Frances divorced. Then in 1893 he killed a man in Lee Co., KY . I have the court records of the trial and he received 21 years. Family legend says he served one of those years. Legend also says he married again, had another family and they all died in a boating accident on the Cumberland? River aft 1911. In the court records of Lee Co., KY he is called Rufus. Now, I'm seeing where John/Joel H(enry) may indeed be John William Henry both(?) sons of Thomas and Fannie Russell Baptist. I have John William married to Mary Bates with 7 children and John/Joel H married to Arrena Moore with the nine (above mentioned ) children. What is happening here? I have yet to find anything that tells me who the parents of my Rufus James or James Rufus were. I have searched old newspapers for an account of the crime, a boating accident on or about 1911, death records, you name it. I am stuck. Where does this guy fit in the Hill family. Who are his parents? Who did he marry 2nd? Who were the children of the 2nd marriage? When did he die? I will soon be researching in KY and would love to be able to go with something concrete to work with for my Hill connection. Can anyone help. I would welcome any ideas or imput.
