    2. Just came across e-mail written Oct 30, 1997 by Elaine Vincent Kantor Thought you might be interested. "This is a fascinating article in THE VIRGINIAN PILOT newspaper (Norfold, VA Beach, Va area) regarding a Martha Hill known as "Aunt Pratt" whose family lived at Shirley Plantation in charles City Co. VA near Williamsburg in the 17th century. The article concerns a portrait of Martha Hill that hangs in the present day Shirley Plantation and the ghostly doings of Martha Hill's spirit. There is also some genealogical information which I can not vouvh for, but will list below. If you are connected with this family and would like a xerox copy of the article, let me know and I (Justin M. Kantor musical@pilot.inf.net) will take some copies. As far as I know, I'm not connected to these Hills so have no futher info other than what is in article. Section below is extracted in part and quoted in part from article. 1- Col. Edward Hill (bought land where plantation stands by 1653 2- ???(Edward Hill II. PRESUMABLY) 3-Edward Hill III (present manor house begun by him in 1723) 4-Martha (married an Englishman and thereafter lived in England) 4-Sarah (married an " " " " " " " ) 4- Elizabeth (inherited the estate) +John Carter (eldest son of Robert "King" Carter) 5- Charles Carter (inherited Shirley Plantation about 1770 Charles Carter had 2 wives and 23 children including Anne Hill Carter who became the second wife of Gov. Henry "Light Horse Harry" Lee at Shirley in 1793. One of their children was Robert E. Lee. Today Shirley is both museum and working farm, operated by the 10th and 11the generations of the Hill-Carter Family. This plantation is open to the public at selected times. Please remember, I can't vouch for ht accuracy of this article; I just thought it might help someone." Marheinek@aol.com
